Chapter 14 - RICHARD’S LAST PUBLIC WEAPON

Richard hired the best crisis firm money could still buy.
Within days, stories appeared.
MICHAEL DONOVAN’S SECRET BILLIONS.
WILLOW STERLING: VICTIM OR HEIRESS WITH A PLAN?
Questions spread.
Had Willow intentionally provoked Lucas?
Had Michael used his daughter’s marriage to monitor Sterling Continental?
Was Amanda a paid witness?
Was the ownership conversion legally valid?
Then came the forged postnuptial agreement.
Richard’s attorneys filed it publicly.
It appeared to show Willow transferring any future trust interest acquired during marriage into marital property.
If valid, Lucas could claim a share.
A large enough share might challenge Donovan control.
Reporters surrounded Willow outside court.
She said nothing.
Inside, Richard’s attorney presented the document.
Willow studied the signature.
Then smiled.
Evelyn noticed.
“What?”
“That isn’t mine.”
The attorney across the room laughed.
“It certainly appears to be.”
Willow shook her head.
“My mother taught me how to sign my name.”
She took a blank page.
Signed.
WILLOW DONOVAN.
The final W contained a tiny downward stroke through the last line.
“My mother did it.”
“I copied her when I was six.”
“I have never stopped.”
Evelyn examined the forged signature.
No stroke.
Richard’s attorney argued inconsistency.
A forensic handwriting expert examined hundreds of documents.
Every authentic adult signature contained the stroke.
The forged agreement did not.
Then metadata destroyed the rest.
The signature image had been copied from a gallery insurance form.
The file used to create the agreement originated on Lucas Sterling’s personal laptop.
Lucas sat in court.
His face became gray.
Willow looked at him.
He closed his eyes.
Outside afterward, a reporter shouted,
“Mrs. Sterling, are you trying to destroy your husband’s family?”
Willow stopped.
Dozens of microphones moved toward her.
She could have walked away.
Instead, she turned.
“No.”
The crowd quieted.
“I am not trying to destroy anyone.”
She said.
“I am trying to stop a family that spent decades believing consequences were something that happened to other people.”
A reporter asked,
“Do you want revenge?”
Willow looked directly into the cameras.
“No.”
“I want records opened.”
“I want stolen money returned.”
“I want workers protected.”
“I want the truth about my mother.”
“And I want people to stop calling accountability revenge simply because the person facing it is wealthy.”
The clip spread everywhere.
Richard watched it from Sterling House.
Then threw a glass into the fireplace.

Marion, standing in the doorway, did not flinch.
For the first time, Richard realized even his wife was no longer afraid enough.
