Chapter 12 - WHAT WAS HIDDEN IN WISCONSIN

The storage facility looked ordinary.
Rows of beige metal doors.
Security cameras.
A bored attendant.
Unit 417 belonged to a company called North Shore Equipment Leasing.
The company belonged to Richard.
Investigators opened the unit under warrant.
Inside were forty-three boxes.
Two computers.
Seven phones.
Three ledgers.
And one steel case.
Daniel began cataloging.
Amanda identified records she had seen years earlier.
Marion identified Richard’s handwriting.
Lucas provided passwords.
The steel case contained cash.
Almost three million dollars.
And passports.
One for Richard Sterling.
One under a different name.
Willow looked at Henry.
“He was planning to run.”
“Possibly.”
Then they found Claire’s file.
Not copies.
Originals.
Richard had kept everything.
The Mercer Automotive invoice.
Insurance paperwork.
A handwritten note.
E.M. CONFIRMED COMPLETION.
Daniel stared at it.
“Eddie Mercer.”
Michael sat silently.
Willow watched him.
He had waited twenty-seven years.
Now proof surrounded him.
Yet he looked less triumphant with every document.
On one computer, investigators found audio files transferred from old tapes.
One conversation was dated January 18, 1999.
The day after Claire died.
Richard’s voice.
A second man believed to be Eddie Mercer.
Mercer:
“She’s dead.”
Richard:
“I read the paper.”
Mercer:
“You said nobody would get hurt.”
Richard:
“I said you were fixing a car.”
Mercer:
“You know what you paid for.”
Richard:
“And you know what happens if you keep talking.”
The recording ended.
Michael stood.
Walked outside.
Willow followed.
He leaned against the building.
“I thought this would feel different.”
“What?”
“Knowing.”
She stood beside him.
“For twenty-seven years I imagined proving it.”
“What would happen?”
“I thought I would feel like I had done something for Claire.”
Willow looked at him.
“Dad.”
“She’s still dead.”
“Yes.”
The word hurt.
Michael nodded.
“That’s the part nobody tells you about justice.”
“It doesn’t reverse anything.”
“No.”
Willow took his hand.
“But it stops the lie from being the final version.”
Michael looked at her.
Claire’s tape had said protection could not mean silence forever.
Now silence was ending.
That afternoon, federal investigators formally expanded their case.
Financial crimes.
Obstruction.
Conspiracy.
Evidence related to Claire Donovan’s death.
Richard Sterling’s attorneys issued a statement calling everything a malicious family dispute.
Then another recording leaked.
Lucas confronting Richard.
“Did you kill Claire Donovan?”
Silence.
Then Richard’s voice.
“Be very careful which questions you ask when you already benefit from the answer.”
The public heard it millions of times within twenty-four hours.
The Sterling name began collapsing.
May you like
Not because Michael attacked it.
Because the truth finally touched it.
