Chapter 15 - THE SON WHO FINALLY CHOSE A SIDE
Lucas’s cooperation began with passwords.
Then emails.
Then offshore account codes.
Then names.
He sat with federal investigators for nine hours.
He admitted helping create the forged agreement.
He admitted knowing Graham would retrieve the trust document.
He admitted lying to Willow about how they met.
He admitted signing transactions he did not understand because Richard told him to.
“Did you know those transactions were illegal?”
The investigator asked.
Lucas hesitated.
“I knew I did not want to understand them.”
The answer mattered.
Not knowing and refusing to know were different things.
Lucas did not ask to be treated as innocent.
He asked only that his cooperation be considered.
Afterward, he met Willow in the hallway.
“You don’t have to talk to me.”
She stopped.
“What did you tell them?”
“Everything.”
“Everything?”
“As much as I know.”
She studied him.
“Why now?”
Lucas smiled bitterly.
“Because my father told me I was weak for confessing.”
“And for the first time, I realized everything he calls weakness is usually something human.”
Willow said nothing.
“I loved you.”
Lucas continued.
“I know saying that makes me sound ridiculous.”
“No.”
She replied.
“It makes what happened sadder.”
His eyes filled.
“I wish I could go back.”
“You can’t.”
“I know.”
“You can only decide who you are after.”
Lucas nodded.
“I’m trying.”
Willow looked at him for several seconds.
Then walked away.
She did not forgive him.
But she believed him.
Those were different things.
That evening, investigators found one final recording in the Wisconsin archive.
Claire Donovan speaking to Marion.
Claire:
“If you stay silent, Richard will never stop.”
Marion:
“I have children.”
Claire:
“So do I.”
A long pause.
Then Claire said,
“One day, our children will inherit whatever we protect today.”
Willow listened beside Marion.
Neither woman spoke afterward.
Because Claire had been right.
Lucas inherited Richard’s entitlement.
