Chapter 19 - THE NAME CAME OFF THE BUILDING
Sterling Continental did not survive.
The businesses did.
That distinction mattered.
The board approved Willow’s restructuring plan.
Manufacturing remained.
Transportation remained.
Hotels remained.
The corrupt holding structure disappeared.
Personal family control disappeared.
Twenty percent of the reorganized company moved into an employee ownership trust.
Willow proposed the name:
Donovan Cooperative Holdings.
Michael hated it.
“Absolutely not.”
“Why?”
“I spent forty years keeping my name off skyscrapers.”
“Grandpa spent his whole life keeping his name off them.”
“Exactly.”
Willow smiled.
“Then consider it revenge.”
Michael pointed at her.
“That is not a persuasive governance argument.”
The board outvoted him.
On a rainy Thursday morning, workers began removing the STERLING CONTINENTAL letters from the Chicago headquarters.
Crowds gathered.
News helicopters hovered.

Willow watched from across the street.
Helena stood beside her.
“Feel good?”
Willow thought about it.
“Different.”
“How?”
“I used to think I wanted to watch their name fall.”
“And now?”
Willow looked at employees entering the building.
“I mostly want the people inside to be okay.”
Helena smiled.
“That sounds annoyingly healthy.”
Willow laughed.
Amanda joined the company’s ethics committee.
Daniel became chief compliance officer.
Evelyn remained general counsel.
Michael refused every executive title.
Instead, he requested one board seat and continued working three mornings each week at Donovan Auto.
People began bringing their cars there just to see if the billionaire mechanic rumor was true.
Michael hated it.
A customer once asked,
“So are you really worth billions?”
Michael replied,
“Your alternator is worth twelve hundred if you keep ignoring that noise.”
Willow laughed for ten minutes when she heard.
Life began becoming ordinary again.
Not the old ordinary.
