Chapter 9 â The Vault Beneath the Sea

Darkness swallowed the Founder's Office.
For a heartbeat, no one moved.
The silence was so complete that Elena could hear her own breathingâand the slow, rhythmic crash of waves somewhere beyond the stone walls.
Then came another sound.
Thunk.
Thunk.
A series of heavy mechanical locks disengaging.
Not one.
Not two.
At least six.
Somewhere beneath the resort, something that had remained sealed for decades was opening.
Emergency lights flickered on.
A faint crimson glow illuminated the room.
Faces appeared one by one.
Richard.
Bennett.
Samuel.
Charles.
Julian.
Vanessa.
Everyone was still there.
But something had changed.
The old oak bookshelf beside the portrait of William Ashford had swung open by several inches.
Behind it...
A narrow stone passage descended deeper into the earth.
Cold air drifted upward.
Air that smelled of saltwater and cedar.
Samuel whispered,
"It opened."
Richard looked stunned.
"I've never seen it open."
The cybersecurity analyst's voice crackled through the intercom.
"Mr. Bennett!"
Bennett pressed the receiver.
"Report."
"The intrusion stopped."
"What?"
"They were inside the archive for exactly fifty-eight seconds."
"Did they copy anything?"
"We don't know yet."
"What did they access?"
The analyst hesitated.
Then answered.
"Only one file."
Richard's voice became sharp.
"Which file?"
Another pause.
"The Founder Protocol."
Silence.
Even Charles looked uneasy.
Julian frowned.
"What is the Founder Protocol?"
No one answered.
Finally, Richard spoke.
"It was never supposed to exist."
Elena looked from her father to Charles.
"You both know."
Richard nodded slowly.
"My father believed that one day someone would try to steal the empire."
"So he created one final safeguard."
"What safeguard?"
Charles answered this time.
"A legal weapon."
Bennett took a slow breath.
"The Founder Protocol isn't money."
"It isn't property."
"It isn't a hidden account."
"It's control."
Julian laughed.
"Control of what?"
Bennett looked directly at him.
"Everything."
Richard walked toward the hidden passage.
"When Father built Azure Crown..."
"...he transferred the original ownership documents somewhere no court, bank, or government could ever seize."
Julian frowned.
"That's impossible."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"It was brilliant."
He looked toward Elena.
"The documents inside that vault are the originals."
"The deeds."
"The trust."
"The succession charter."
"The founder's personal directives."
"If those documents disappear..."
He paused.
"...every modern copy becomes vulnerable to legal challenge."
Elena's expression hardened.
"So whoever entered the archive..."
"...was looking for the vault."
Charles nodded.
"Exactly."
Samuel picked up an old lantern hanging beside the secret passage.
It still worked.
Warm yellow light spilled across damp stone steps leading downward.
Richard looked around the room.
"No one separates."
Julian folded his arms.
"I'm coming."
Richard didn't object.
"If the person behind this is who I think it is..."
"...you deserve to see what greed really creates."
The staircase spiraled downward for nearly five minutes.
The deeper they descended, the louder the ocean became.
Finally, they reached an underground corridor carved directly into the island's bedrock.
The walls were reinforced with steel beams that looked older than the resort itself.
Elena ran her fingers across the stone.
"This wasn't built recently."
Samuel smiled.
"No."
"It was built before the resort."
At the end of the tunnel stood an enormous circular steel door.
It resembled the entrance to an old bank vault.
Across its surface was engraved the Ashford family crest.
Below it were twelve words.
Wealth Is Temporary. Character Decides Who Deserves To Guard It.
Richard stared at the inscription.
"Father wrote that."
The vault door stood slightly open.
Only a few inches.
Enough to know...
Someone had already been there.
Bennett immediately examined the locking mechanism.
"No explosives."
"No forced entry."
Richard frowned.
"So how was it opened?"
Charles answered quietly.
"With a key."
Everyone turned toward him.
"There were only three keys."
Richard nodded.
"My father's."
"Mine."
"And yours."
Charles slowly reached into his jacket.
He removed an old brass key.
"I still have mine."
Richard did the same.
"So do I."
That left only one possibility.
Their father's key...
Had been taken.
Julian stepped closer.
"Open it."
Richard hesitated.
Then pushed.
The massive steel door groaned open.
The room beyond looked nothing like anyone expected.
There were no piles of gold.
No jewels.
No stacks of cash.
Instead...
Rows of climate-controlled cabinets lined the walls.
Each carefully labeled.
Land Deeds
Trust Agreements
Board Directives
Family Correspondence
In the center stood a single glass display case.
Empty.
Richard stopped walking.
His face drained of color.
"No..."
Elena hurried beside him.
Inside the case lay only a small white card.
The document it once protected...
Was gone.
Bennett leaned closer and read aloud.
Original Crown Heritage Charter
Removed at 8:41 A.M.
Today's date.
Less than an hour earlier.
Richard closed his eyes.
"We're too late."
Julian looked around impatiently.
"What's the big deal?"
Bennett turned sharply.
"The missing document legally establishes ownership over every major holding in the Ashford Trust."
Julian shrugged.
"So make another copy."
Bennett almost laughed.
"There isn't another original."
Vanessa whispered,
"So someone stole your empire?"
Richard looked at her.
"No."
"They stole the only document capable of proving it instantly."
Samuel suddenly noticed something on the floor.
A single chess piece.
A black king.
He picked it up carefully.
Attached beneath it...
A folded note.
Elena unfolded the paper.
Only one sentence had been written.
In elegant handwriting.
The first move has already been made.
No signature.
Nothing else.
Charles slowly scanned the room.
Then his eyes stopped on the far wall.
"There."
A small security camera.
Modern.
Hidden.
Richard frowned.
"Father never installed cameras down here."
Charles nodded.
"He didn't."
"Then who did?"
Before anyone answeredâ
The camera moved.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
As if someone on the other end was watching every person inside the vault.
Then...
A tiny green light blinked.
The connection ended.
Whoever had been watching them...
Had just disconnected.
At that same moment...
Nearly three thousand miles away...
Inside a luxury penthouse overlooking Manhattan...
A man in an impeccably tailored black suit closed his laptop.
He smiled as the video feed disappeared.
An assistant approached.
"Sir?"
The man looked out over the city skyline.
"So..."
"The Ashfords finally found the vault."
"Yes, sir."
"And the Charter?"
He picked up an aged leather document resting on his desk.
Sealed with the original Ashford crest.
"Exactly where it belongs."
The assistant hesitated.
"What about Richard Ashford?"
The man smiled faintly.
"Richard is still fighting yesterday's battle."
He looked at the document again.
"He hasn't realized..."
"...I've been preparing for this one for twenty-five years."
The assistant frowned.
"Should we inform the others?"
The man nodded.
"Yes."
"And tell them..."
"...Phase Two begins tonight."
As the call ended, he turned the leather document over.
May you like
On the back, in faded ink, was a name that made his smile widen.
Charles Ashford.
