Chapter 16 – The Thirteenth House

The first bullet shattered the lighthouse clock.

Ancient gears exploded across the wooden floor.

Richard Ashford drew the compact pistol he had sworn he would never need again.

"Move!"

His security team rushed toward the entrance as another volley of gunfire struck the stone walls.

Inside the lighthouse, Nathaniel pushed Elena behind the thick cast-iron staircase.

"Stay low."

She looked at him in disbelief.

"You just saved my life."

Nathaniel gave a bitter smile.

"If you die..."

"...everything I've spent twenty-two years building dies with you."

Before Elena could answer—

A flash grenade rolled through the doorway.

Nathaniel kicked it back down the stairs a split second before it detonated.

The explosion echoed across the cliffs.

Outside, black-clad operatives spread across the rocky coastline with military precision.

They weren't moving like mercenaries.

They were moving like soldiers.

Each knew exactly where to stand.

Exactly where to fire.

Exactly where the Ashford security team would take cover.

Richard immediately understood.

"They've studied us."

Harold Bennett nodded grimly.

"For years."

One of the attackers stepped forward.

Unlike the others, he wasn't wearing a tactical helmet.

Only a black overcoat.

Silver hair.

Calm eyes.

He held a cane in one hand.

Not because he needed it.

Because he chose to.

He looked toward the lighthouse.

Then smiled.

"William's grandchildren..."

"...at last."

Richard froze.

He recognized the man instantly.

"No..."

Samuel whispered beside him,

"It can't be."

The man removed one leather glove.

On his hand rested an old signet ring.

Not the Ashford crest.

A broken crown.

Richard's voice became almost inaudible.

"Sebastian Voss."

Elena heard the name through her earpiece.

She looked toward Nathaniel.

"You know him."

Nathaniel's expression darkened.

"I've spent half my life trying not to."

"You worked for him."

"No."

Nathaniel shook his head.

"I thought I was working with him."

He laughed bitterly.

"I was simply another piece on his chessboard."

Outside...

Sebastian Voss raised his cane.

Every gunshot stopped instantly.

The silence that followed felt even more dangerous.

He spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"I have no interest in killing either Ashford heir."

He smiled pleasantly.

"Not today."

Richard stepped into view.

"What do you want?"

Sebastian looked directly at him.

"The Coin."

Nathaniel laughed from inside the lighthouse.

"So that's what this is really about."

Sebastian's smile widened.

"You finally understand."

Richard frowned.

"My father said there were twelve founding families."

Sebastian nodded.

"There were."

"What happened to the thirteenth?"

Sebastian's eyes hardened.

"William erased us."

The wind carried his words across the cliffs.

"My great-grandfather helped finance the first Ashford hotel."

"He built the shipping routes."

"He secured the international contracts."

"And when the Covenant was formed..."

"...William decided twelve families were enough."

Sebastian tapped the broken crown engraved on his ring.

"Our name was removed."

"Our history was buried."

"Our descendants became ghosts."

He looked at Elena.

"Tell me..."

"...how would you spend seventy years being forgotten?"

Elena remained silent.

She could hear the pain beneath his anger.

But pain did not justify murder.

"Whatever happened..."

"...this isn't justice."

Sebastian smiled.

"No."

"It isn't."

"It's correction."

Nathaniel slowly stepped out of the lighthouse.

Richard immediately shouted,

"Get back inside!"

Nathaniel ignored him.

He walked until he stood beside Elena.

For the first time in twenty-two years...

The two Ashford heirs stood together.

Sebastian watched them with obvious interest.

"There you are."

"The family reunited."

Nathaniel folded his arms.

"You manipulated me."

Sebastian shrugged.

"I inspired you."

"You fed my resentment."

"I simply listened."

"You used Julian."

"So did you."

Nathaniel fell silent.

Because that part was true.

Sebastian took another step forward.

"I never cared about your family feud."

"I cared about what the Coin unlocks."

Harold Bennett interrupted.

"You know what it opens?"

Sebastian looked almost amused.

"I know better than William ever did."

Samuel quietly whispered to Richard,

"He's lying."

Richard nodded.

"I know."

Samuel frowned.

"No..."

"I mean literally."

Richard looked confused.

"What?"

Samuel stared at Sebastian's ring.

"That's not the original Thirteenth House seal."

"It's a copy."

Nathaniel heard him.

His eyes narrowed.

"You forged the ring."

Sebastian's smile disappeared.

For the first time...

His composure cracked.

Only for a second.

But Elena noticed.

She remembered her grandfather's words.

Listen before you judge.

Then the Keeper's warning.

The Coin unlocks trust.

Suddenly...

Everything fit together.

She stepped forward.

"You don't know what the Coin opens."

Sebastian laughed.

"I've searched for it my entire life."

"You searched for a legend."

She shook her head.

"No."

"You searched for power."

"And because of that..."

"...you never understood Grandfather."

Sebastian's eyes narrowed.

"What are you talking about?"

Elena held up her half of the Coin.

"The Coin isn't a key."

Nathaniel slowly looked at her.

She continued.

"It was never meant to unlock a vault."

"It was meant to identify people."

Harold Bennett's eyes widened.

Richard finally understood.

"My God..."

Elena looked directly at Sebastian.

"Grandfather divided it because no one person should ever possess complete authority."

She turned toward Nathaniel.

"The two halves only become meaningful..."

"...when two people choose to trust each other enough to reunite them willingly."

Nathaniel stared at his half of the Coin.

For twenty-two years...

He had believed it was a weapon.

William had intended it to be a test.

Sebastian's expression darkened.

"Enough."

He raised his cane.

Hidden inside it...

A thin steel blade slid into view.

"Give me both halves."

"No."

Elena's answer came instantly.

Nathaniel stepped beside her.

"No."

Richard moved forward.

"So do I."

One by one...

Samuel.

Bennett.

Margaret.

Even Julian walked out from behind the stone wall.

Vanessa, shaken but resolute, followed.

Sebastian looked around.

The smile slowly vanished from his face.

For the first time...

Nathaniel wasn't standing alone.

And that changed everything.

Sebastian sighed.

"So..."

"You finally became the family William hoped for."

He lowered the blade.

"But you're still too late."

He reached into his coat and tossed a small black device onto the ground.

It emitted a rapid series of electronic beeps.

Harold Bennett's face turned white.

"Everyone down!"

The device wasn't a bomb.

It was worse.

Every phone.

Every tablet.

Every security radio on the island went dead simultaneously.

Margaret checked her screen.

"No signal."

The cybersecurity analyst shouted through the failing network,

"They've cut every communication line!"

Sebastian turned and walked calmly toward his waiting convoy.

Without looking back, he called over his shoulder,

"While you've been protecting each other..."

"...my people have been taking your empire."

As the convoy disappeared into the coastal fog, Elena looked at the powerless phone in her hand.

Then toward Nathaniel.

For the first time since this nightmare began...

Neither of them cared who owned the resorts.

Because somewhere beyond the island...

An invisible enemy had just launched a coordinated attack against every Ashford company across the world.

May you like

And if they couldn't stop it before dawn...

There would be no empire left to save.
