Chapter 10 – The Man in Manhattan

The private jet landed in Manhattan just after sunset.

From the window of the penthouse overlooking Central Park, the mysterious man watched the city disappear beneath the glow of thousands of lights.

He placed the aged leather document on a polished walnut desk.

The original Crown Heritage Charter.

The very document Richard Ashford believed had been lost forever.

The man smiled.

"After twenty-five years..."

"...it's finally mine."

Behind him, his assistant remained silent.

He had learned long ago that his employer never celebrated too early.

The assistant finally spoke.

"Sir... the Ashfords have entered the vault."

"I know."

"They found the display case."

"I know."

"They're searching for the Charter."

The man poured himself a glass of bourbon.

"They won't find it."

He took one slow sip before adding,

"They're looking in the wrong direction."

Back on Azure Crown Island...

The atmosphere inside the underground vault had changed completely.

No one was thinking about Julian anymore.

The missing Charter overshadowed everything.

Richard carefully examined the empty display case.

"No signs of forced entry."

Bennett nodded.

"Whoever removed it knew exactly how the security system worked."

Samuel frowned.

"Which means..."

Richard finished the sentence.

"...they had help."

Elena stood quietly near one of the climate-controlled cabinets.

Something about the room bothered her.

She couldn't explain it.

She slowly looked around.

The shelves.

The lighting.

The ventilation.

Then...

Her eyes stopped.

"Dad."

Richard turned.

"What is it?"

She pointed toward the empty display case.

"It's too clean."

Everyone looked.

"What do you mean?" Bennett asked.

"There isn't any dust."

Samuel blinked.

"You're right."

Every cabinet in the room carried a thin layer of age.

Except the glass case.

Someone had cleaned it recently.

Very recently.

Harold Bennett immediately called the forensic team.

Within minutes, specialists entered the vault wearing gloves.

One investigator carefully sprayed the glass with forensic solution.

Slowly...

Fingerprints appeared.

Several sets.

One belonged to Richard.

Another to Charles.

One to William Ashford from decades earlier, preserved beneath the glass.

Then...

A fourth set emerged.

Unknown.

The investigator looked up.

"We'll identify them."

Meanwhile...

Julian leaned against the stone wall, growing increasingly impatient.

"Are we done here?"

No one answered.

He scoffed.

"This changes nothing."

Richard slowly turned toward him.

"Doesn't it?"

"You've still got your resorts."

Richard smiled faintly.

"Do I?"

Julian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Instead of answering, Richard looked toward Margaret Collins.

"The report."

She opened her tablet.

"Three more properties have suspended executive operations."

Julian laughed.

"So?"

Margaret continued reading.

"The Zurich Hotel."

"The Kyoto Retreat."

"The Amalfi Estate."

"All awaiting ownership confirmation."

Julian's smile faded.

His own phone vibrated.

This time he managed to unlock it.

One email.

From the International Hospitality Exchange.

Subject:

Trading Suspension Notice

He opened it.

His breathing slowed.

Then stopped.

Sterling Resorts stock...

Had been suspended.

Pending investigation into ownership uncertainty.

Vanessa noticed his expression.

"What happened?"

Julian looked at her.

For the first time...

He had no reassuring answer.

"Our shares..."

"...have stopped trading."

The words spread through the room.

Margaret quietly closed her tablet.

"It won't stop there."

Bennett nodded.

"Every lender will review their exposure."

Richard added calmly,

"And every partner will ask the same question."

"Who actually owns the company?"

Back in Manhattan...

The mysterious man received a secure phone call.

"It's begun."

He smiled.

"Good."

"And Julian?"

"He has no idea."

"He never did."

The caller hesitated.

"What about Elena?"

The man remained silent for several seconds.

Finally...

"She worries me."

"Because she's William's granddaughter?"

"No."

"Because she's Richard's daughter."

The assistant frowned.

"What's the difference?"

The man looked toward the skyline.

"William built empires."

"Richard protected them."

"But Elena..."

He smiled.

"She'll fight for them."

Back on the island...

One of the forensic specialists approached Bennett.

"We've found something."

He handed over a microscopic evidence bag.

Inside...

A tiny fragment of dark blue fabric.

Richard frowned.

"A suit?"

The investigator nodded.

"It was caught inside the display case hinge."

Margaret looked toward Julian.

His suit was charcoal gray.

Charles wore black.

Bennett wore navy.

None matched.

Samuel suddenly spoke.

"I've seen that color before."

Everyone looked at him.

"Where?"

"The Board Chairman."

Richard frowned.

"Arthur Whitmore?"

Samuel nodded slowly.

"He always wears dark blue Italian suits."

Silence.

Arthur Whitmore.

Chairman of Sterling Resorts.

A man who had served beside Richard for almost thirty years.

A man Richard trusted completely.

"No."

Richard shook his head immediately.

"Arthur would never—"

Samuel interrupted gently.

"I hope you're right."

"But he was here yesterday."

Richard froze.

"What?"

"He said he wanted to inspect the foundation."

"Yesterday afternoon."

Bennett's eyes narrowed.

"He never mentioned that."

Samuel looked confused.

"I assumed you knew."

At that exact moment...

Margaret's phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Then slowly lowered it.

Her face had turned pale.

"What happened?" Elena asked.

Margaret swallowed.

"The Board Chairman..."

She struggled to finish.

"Arthur Whitmore..."

"...didn't come to today's emergency meeting."

Richard frowned.

"Why?"

Margaret whispered,

"Because..."

"...his private jet left for New York six hours ago."

Silence.

Richard's heart sank.

Arthur.

His oldest friend.

His closest advisor.

The man who had stood beside him at Elena's wedding.

The man William Ashford himself had personally selected for the board.

Richard sat down heavily in one of the old leather chairs.

"I trusted him."

Elena knelt beside her father.

"We don't know he's involved."

Richard looked at her with tired eyes.

"I've known Arthur for thirty-two years."

"If he disappeared today..."

"...he already knows something we don't."

Thousands of miles away...

Arthur Whitmore's Gulfstream jet descended toward a private airport outside Manhattan.

Waiting beside the runway...

Was the same black limousine that had collected the mysterious man earlier that evening.

Arthur stepped inside.

The limousine drove away without a word.

Twenty minutes later, he entered the penthouse.

The mysterious man remained seated, looking out over the city.

Without turning around, he spoke.

"Did anyone follow you?"

Arthur removed his coat.

"No."

"And the Charter?"

Arthur placed a weathered leather portfolio on the desk.

The man opened it carefully.

Inside rested the original Crown Heritage Charter.

Perfectly preserved.

The man smiled.

"Excellent."

Arthur looked uneasy.

"Richard will figure it out."

"Eventually."

"And Elena?"

The man finally turned around.

His face remained hidden in shadow.

"She's smarter than Richard."

Arthur frowned.

"Then why aren't you worried?"

The man smiled.

"Because she still doesn't know..."

"...who I really am."

He stepped into the light.

Arthur lowered his head respectfully.

"Good evening..."

"...Mr. Ashford."

Arthur's words echoed through the silent penthouse.

Ashford.

Not an outsider.

Not a business rival.

Not a stranger.

The mastermind behind everything...

Was a member of the Ashford bloodline.
