Chapter 13 – The Keeper of the Coin

No one spoke after the video ended.
The black screen reflected the faces gathered in the Founder's Office—Richard, Charles, Bennett, Samuel, Margaret, Elena... and Julian.
Every one of them had been chasing the wrong thing.
For decades.
Richard broke the silence.
"My father let Nathaniel steal the Charter."
Harold Bennett slowly nodded.
"I believe he did."
Julian looked incredulous.
"Why would anyone allow that?"
Bennett folded his arms.
"Because William Ashford never relied on a single safeguard."
"He always built three."
"If one failed..."
"...the other two survived."
Elena replayed the final seconds of the recording.
William held up the silver coin.
The image was blurry.
But one detail stood out.
Around the unfamiliar symbol were twelve tiny stars.
Samuel suddenly leaned forward.
"I've seen that before."
Everyone turned toward him.
"Where?"
He frowned, searching his memory.
"Not on a document..."
"On a uniform."
Richard looked puzzled.
"A uniform?"
Samuel nodded slowly.
"When the resort first opened, there was an elderly gardener."
"No one knew his real name."
"Your father called him only one thing."
"The Keeper."
Elena's heartbeat quickened.
"The Keeper..."
"...of the Coin."
Samuel pointed at the frozen image.
"That's him."
Charles frowned.
"The old gardener?"
"I remember him."
"He retired before Nathaniel disappeared."
Samuel shook his head.
"No."
"He didn't retire."
"He vanished."
Harold Bennett immediately opened the personnel archives.
Within minutes, an old employment file appeared on the screen.
Employee Name: Thomas Reed.
Position: Groundskeeper.
Employment Status: Resigned.
Photograph unavailable.
Address unavailable.
Emergency contact...
Blank.
Julian laughed softly.
"That's impossible."
Margaret looked at the file.
"He doesn't exist."
Samuel corrected her.
"He did."
"But not as Thomas Reed."
Richard walked slowly toward the window overlooking the ocean.
"My father once told me..."
"'The man who protects the trees also protects the roots.'"
He turned back.
"I thought he was speaking metaphorically."
Samuel smiled sadly.
"He rarely spoke metaphorically."
Meanwhile...
Manhattan.
Nathaniel Ashford sat alone in the penthouse library.
The original Charter rested inside a fireproof case.
Arthur Whitmore entered carrying fresh intelligence.
"The island recovered William's recording."
Nathaniel didn't look surprised.
"I expected they would."
Arthur hesitated.
"He mentioned the Coin."
Nathaniel's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Arthur noticed.
"So..."
"You still haven't found it."
Nathaniel remained silent.
After several seconds, he smiled.
"No."
Arthur frowned.
"You searched for twenty-two years."
"And found nothing."
Nathaniel looked toward the skyline.
"My grandfather hid people better than documents."
Back on Azure Crown Island...
The cybersecurity analyst hurried into the room again.
"We found another encrypted archive."
Bennett sighed.
"I hope this one answers something."
"It might."
The analyst connected his tablet.
A scanned notebook appeared.
Its cover read:
Grounds Maintenance Log
Year:
Samuel's eyes widened.
"That's impossible."
"I wrote that."
He flipped through the digital pages.
Tree replacements.
Irrigation schedules.
Flower inventories.
Everything looked ordinary.
Until Elena noticed tiny numbers written beside certain entries.
"What do these mean?"
Samuel frowned.
"I don't remember writing those."
Bennett enlarged one page.
The numbers formed coordinates.
Not gardening notes.
Locations.
Richard immediately recognized one.
"The old lighthouse."
Another.
"The vineyard."
Another.
"The west cliff."
Samuel whispered,
"My God..."
Elena looked at him.
"What?"
Samuel slowly sat down.
"They weren't maintenance records."
"They were meeting places."
"Meeting places for whom?"
Samuel swallowed.
"For your grandfather..."
"...and the Keeper."
Julian rubbed his temples.
"This keeps getting stranger."
Richard ignored him.
"Can we map every coordinate?"
The analyst nodded.
Within minutes, the locations appeared on a digital island map.
There were twelve.
When connected...
They formed the shape of a crown.
At the very center...
One final point blinked.
Hidden beneath the oldest oak tree on the island.
Samuel smiled faintly.
William loved that tree.
"He planted it the day Elena was born."
Elena looked at her father.
"You never told me."
Richard's voice softened.
"Your grandfather said it would grow with you."
Without wasting another minute, the group drove across the estate.
The old oak stood alone on a grassy hill overlooking the sea.
Its branches stretched wide, casting shadows across the ground.
Samuel walked directly to the trunk.
He counted seven large roots.
Then knelt beside the eighth.
"This is it."
He brushed away decades of fallen leaves.
A rusted iron ring appeared beneath the soil.
Together, Richard and Samuel pulled.
A hidden stone hatch slowly lifted.
Cold air escaped from below.
Not another tunnel.
A small underground chamber.
Inside...
There was no treasure.
No vault.
Only a wooden bench.
A lantern.
And an old man quietly reading a leather-bound book.
He looked up as the hatch opened.
His beard was white.
His clothes were simple.
His eyes, however, were astonishingly sharp.
He smiled at Elena as though he had been expecting her.
"It took you long enough."
Samuel's voice trembled.
"Thomas..."
The old man chuckled.
"I haven't used that name in years."
Richard stepped forward cautiously.
"You knew my father."
The old man nodded.
"I buried him."
"I planted every tree he ever loved."
"I watched every generation of your family."
"And I kept my promise."
He reached into his jacket.
Everyone instinctively held their breath.
Slowly...
He placed a small silver coin on the wooden table.
One side carried the Ashford crest.
The other...
The mysterious symbol from William's video.
Elena stared at it.
"The Coin."
The old man smiled.
"No."
He gently pushed it toward her.
"This..."
"...is only one half."
Silence filled the chamber.
Richard frowned.
"One half?"
The Keeper nodded.
"William divided it before he died."
"The second half has been hidden for more than twenty years."
Elena asked the question everyone was thinking.
"Who has it?"
The Keeper's smile slowly disappeared.
"Nathaniel."
The room froze.
The Keeper looked directly into Elena's eyes.
"He stole half the key..."
"...without ever realizing he could never unlock the legacy with only one piece."
Outside, thunder rolled across the ocean.
The war for the Ashford empire had entered a new phase.
Because for the first time in twenty-two years...

Elena possessed something Nathaniel desperately needed.
And Nathaniel possessed something Elena could never recover by force.
