Chapter 8 â The Name Beneath the Fold

Richard Ashford stared at the final page of his father's journal.
His hands, steady through decades of billion-dollar negotiations, trembled for the first time in years.
Elena noticed immediately.
"Dad..."
His eyes remained fixed on the page.
Harold Bennett stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he slowly turned the journal toward them.
At the bottom of the page, beneath the sentenceâ
The betrayal will not begin with the outsider. It will begin inside the family.
âwas a single handwritten name.
Charles Ashford.
The room fell silent.
Elena blinked.
"Uncle Charles?"
She looked at her father in disbelief.
"That can't be right."
Charles Ashford was Richard's younger brother.
He had practically helped raise Elena after her mother passed away.
He remembered every birthday.
Every graduation.
Every Christmas.
He was the funny uncle who never forgot to call.
The man who always insisted family mattered more than money.
Richard slowly closed the journal.
"I prayed I'd never see this."
Harold Bennett frowned.
"William never accused people without evidence."
Richard nodded.
"I know."
"But Charles has served on the Trust Advisory Council for twenty-five years."
"He would neverâ"
Before he could finishâ
A voice interrupted from the doorway.
"Would never what?"
Everyone turned.
Standing at the entrance to the Founder's Office was a distinguished man in his late sixties.
Silver hair.
Tailored charcoal suit.
Warm smile.
Kind eyes.
Charles Ashford.
He looked around the room before smiling at Elena.
"My dear."
"I'm sorry about everything you've been through."
He opened his arms.
Elena instinctively stepped forward.
Richard caught her wrist.
She looked back.
His expression said everything.
Don't.
Charles noticed.
His smile faded ever so slightly.
"So..."
"You found Father's office."
Richard remained silent.
Charles sighed.
"I suppose it was only a matter of time."
Harold Bennett took one cautious step forward.
"How did you know we were here?"
Charles smiled again.
"The same way I know everything that happens on this island."
His answer unsettled everyone.
Julian, who had remained unusually quiet throughout the morning, studied Charles carefully.
He didn't recognize him.
But something about the man's confidence immediately commanded respect.
Charles finally looked toward Julian.
"You must be Mr. Sterling."
Julian straightened.
"I am."
Charles extended his hand.
"I've heard quite a bit about you."
Julian shook it.
"Likewise..."
Then hesitated.
"I'm sorry..."
"I don't believe we've met."
"No."
Charles smiled pleasantly.
"You've simply spent the last nine years living on property owned by my family."
Vanessa shifted uncomfortably.
Another Ashford.
Just what they needed.
Elena stepped between them.
"Uncle..."
She held up the journal.
"Grandfather wrote your name."
Charles glanced at it.
His expression remained remarkably calm.
"So he did."
"Why?"
Instead of answering...
Charles walked toward the old desk.
He gently ran his fingers across its polished surface.
"I haven't been inside this room since Father died."
"You avoided the question."
"I know."
He finally turned around.
"What exactly did he write?"
Richard opened the journal again.
Charles read the page in silence.
When he reached his own name...
He closed his eyes briefly.
Then exhaled.
"I wondered if he'd leave that behind."
Elena's heart pounded.
"So it's true?"
Charles looked at her.
"Depends."
"On what?"
"On what you think betrayal means."
Harold Bennett folded his arms.
"I believe we're entitled to an explanation."
Charles nodded.
"You are."
"But not here."
Richard's voice hardened.
"Now."
Charles met his brother's gaze.
"We don't have time."
"For what?"
Charles looked toward the ceiling.
"As of this morning..."
"...every move we've made is being watched."
The room grew still.
Richard frowned.
"By whom?"
Charles answered quietly.
"The people Father spent forty years protecting this family from."
Julian laughed.
"Oh, come on."
"This isn't some spy novel."
Charles looked at him.
"You think this is about resorts?"
Julian shrugged.
"What else would it be?"
Charles smiled sadly.
"That's exactly why Father never trusted you."
Before anyone could respondâ
A loud alarm echoed throughout the underground office.
Red emergency lights began flashing.
The cybersecurity analyst's voice came through the intercom.
"Mr. Bennett!"
"We have a serious problem."
Bennett pressed the communication button.
"What happened?"
"Someone is accessing the Trust archives remotely."
Richard's face darkened.
"From where?"
The answer came immediately.
"Inside the resort."
Everyone turned instinctively toward Julian.
He raised both hands.
"I didn't do anything."
The analyst continued.
"They're using executive credentials..."
"...issued twenty-one years ago."
Richard froze.
"Twenty-one?"
Harold Bennett whispered,
"Those credentials belonged to Trustees."
Charles slowly closed his eyes.
"They've found it."
Elena looked at him.
"Found what?"
Charles answered with quiet urgency.
"The succession files."
The cybersecurity analyst spoke again.
"Whoever it is has bypassed the first security layer."
"They're heading toward the Founder Protocol."
Richard looked at Charles.
"How is that possible?"
Charles looked directly back.
"Because..."
"...only someone inside the family would know where to look."
A heavy silence settled over the room.
The implication was terrifying.
If Charles wasn't the traitor...
Then someone else within the Ashford bloodline had been secretly working against them.
For years.
Perhaps decades.
Just then, Samuel rushed into the office.
His usually calm face was filled with alarm.
"Mr. Ashford!"
"What is it?"
Samuel handed Richard an old security log.
"I checked the maintenance records."
Richard opened it.
Every hidden entrance beneath the resort had been listed.
Except...
One.
A passage no one in the room had mentioned.
No one except William Ashford.
Samuel pointed toward the final blueprint.
"There's another tunnel."
Richard frowned.
"I thought Father sealed it."
Samuel slowly shook his head.
"No."
"He hid it."
Elena unfolded the aging blueprint across the desk.
A thin red line extended far beyond the Founder's Office.
It disappeared beneath the ocean-facing cliffs.
At the end of the passage...
One handwritten note appeared in William Ashford's unmistakable handwriting.
If this tunnel is ever opened...
The enemy is already inside the family.
No one spoke.
Thenâ
The lights went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the room.
A metallic sound echoed somewhere deep beneath the foundations.
It wasn't the sound of a door closing.
It was the sound of...
A vault opening.
And somewhere in the darkness...
May you like
Someone whispered,
"Too late."
