Chapter 10 - The Second Envelope

We thought the cassette was the last secret.
It wasn’t.
There was another envelope hidden beneath the lining of the safe-deposit box.
Inside were legal documents.
Paul had drafted a will fifteen years before his death.
Then changed it.
The original will contained a provision for Daniel.
A substantial one.
The final will did not.
Ryan stared at the difference.
“He disinherited him.”
Daniel laughed.
“I wasn’t expecting money.”
But the amount wasn’t the important part.
Attached to the original will was a handwritten memo from Paul’s attorney.
Client acknowledges Daniel C. is legally presumed his child under existing birth records and marital status.
That changed everything.
Legally, Paul had once recognized Daniel.
Later, he had arranged for records to suggest Daniel had been voluntarily relinquished by both parents.
The documents did not match.
An attorney reviewed them.
Then another.
The conclusion was ugly.
Paul had manipulated the record of Daniel’s placement.
Whether prosecution would ever have been possible no longer mattered.
Paul was dead.
But Daniel could correct the history.
That mattered to him.
So he did.
He petitioned the state for his original records.
He had his mother’s forged statements formally challenged.
He had the residential facility’s notation amended.
Not erased.
Corrected.
Daniel told me, “I don’t want a clean story.”
I understood.
“I want an accurate one.”
That became our family’s new rule.

Not clean.
Accurate.
