Chapter 11 - The Last Secret About Gabriel

Gabriel had left something for us.

Daniel had kept it because he didn’t know whether he had the right to deliver it.

A wooden box.

Inside were three envelopes.

One for Daniel.

One for Ryan.

One for me.

Gabriel had written ours shortly before he died.

Mine began:

I do not know what you were told about me.

I cried before I reached the second line.

He wrote that he had seen me twice.

Once at a college graduation.

From across a parking lot.

Once at a bookstore when I was twenty-five.

He had stood two aisles away.

He did not speak.

Because he had promised our mother.

I wanted to be furious.

Instead I imagined an older man standing behind shelves, watching a daughter who did not know his face.

That hurt in a different way.

Gabriel wrote:

I hope Paul was kind to you.

I stopped reading.

For all Gabriel knew, the man who destroyed his business might still have been a good father to us.

Life was cruelly complicated that way.

The letter ended:

Blood does not automatically make a father.

Absence does not automatically mean indifference.

And love without courage can still hurt people terribly.

Three lessons.

Three generations.

All pointing toward the same thing.

Ryan read his letter privately.

When he came downstairs, his face was wet.

“What did he say?”

Ryan looked toward Emma.

“He told me if I ever became a father, not to waste time wondering whether I deserved it.”

Melissa took his hand.

“What else?”

May you like

Ryan smiled through tears.

“To just show up.”
