Chapter 8 - The Record St. Catherine’s Forgot to Destroy
Daniel did not want to revisit St. Catherine’s.
The building itself had been demolished years ago.
But the organization’s records had been transferred to county archives.
With Daniel’s permission, we requested them.
The first file contained thirty-seven pages.
Most were ordinary.
School reports.
Medical forms.
Staff notes.
Then we found the psychological assessment that justified Daniel’s continued placement.
Child exhibits aggressive tendencies.
Possible danger to younger siblings.
Mother reports unpredictable behavior.
Daniel read that sentence three times.
“My mother said that?”
I felt sick.
Then he noticed something.
“The signature.”
At the bottom was our mother’s name.
But the handwriting was wrong.
Daniel knew it.
So did I.
Our mother’s M always looped sharply beneath the line.
This signature didn’t.
A forensic document examiner later confirmed what we suspected.
The signature had likely been written by someone else.
Paul.
The report that helped keep Daniel away had been built partly on a forged statement.
Daniel sat in silence for almost an hour after learning that.
Then he said, “I spent forty years believing she chose to tell them I was dangerous.”
I didn’t know what to say.
“She still let you stay there.”
“Yes.”
His voice broke.
“But she didn’t call me dangerous.”
Sometimes truth does not erase pain.
It simply changes its shape.
For Daniel, that mattered.
