Chapter 7 - Melissa’s Line in the Sand

While Ryan and I dug through the past, Melissa was living in the present.
With Emma.
Feeding her.
Changing her.
Sleeping in ninety-minute fragments.
Learning every sound her daughter made.
And watching her husband become increasingly obsessed with people who were dead.
Finally she exploded.
It happened at two in the morning.
Emma had been crying for nearly an hour.
Ryan was downstairs reading one of Gabriel’s letters.
Melissa came down carrying the baby.
“Take her.”
Ryan looked up.
“What?”
“Take your daughter.”
He stood immediately.
Emma settled against his chest.
Melissa stared at him.
“You have spent six days researching a father you never knew.”
Ryan looked confused.
“I need answers.”
“I know.”
She pointed at Emma.
“But she needs a father she does know.”
Silence.
Melissa began crying.
“I understand that this changed you.”
Her voice shook.
“I understand you found out your entire childhood was built on lies.”
“But you are disappearing into it.”
Ryan looked down at Emma.
Melissa continued.
“Your father rejected Daniel because Daniel reminded him of another man.”
Ryan flinched.
“You nearly rejected Emma because she reminded you of Daniel.”
That hit him.
Hard.
“You are not Paul.”
Melissa stepped closer.
“But being afraid of becoming him does not automatically make you different.”
Ryan’s eyes filled.
“Your choices make you different.”
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then Ryan handed Emma back to Melissa.
Not to escape.
To kneel.
He knelt in front of his wife.
“I need help.”
Melissa’s expression softened.
Ryan said it again.
“I need help.”
The next morning, he called a therapist.
That became one of the most important choices he made in the entire story.
Not finding Daniel.
