Chapter 13 - Daniel Comes to Dinner

Our first family dinner with Daniel was terrible.

Not emotionally.

Culinarily.

Ryan cooked.

Ryan should not cook.

Melissa had warned us.

We ignored her.

The roast was nearly black.

The vegetables somehow managed to be both raw and burned.

Daniel stared at his plate.

“Did Paul teach you this?”

Ryan laughed so hard he almost dropped his glass.

That was the moment I knew we might actually become a family.

Not the DNA results.

Not the photographs.

Not the documents.

That stupid joke.

Daniel eventually told us about his life.

He had married once.

Divorced.

No children.

He worked repairing old houses.

He liked jazz.

Hated olives.

Had a dog named Margaret.

We stared at him.

“You named your dog after Mom?”

Daniel shrugged.

“She was difficult and refused to listen.”

I laughed until I cried.

Slowly, the brother from the forbidden photograph became a person.

That was important.

Secrets flatten people.

They turn them into symbols.

Threats.

Shame.

Mysteries.

Daniel was none of those things.

He was sarcastic.

Impatient.

Generous.

Sometimes distant.

Sometimes unexpectedly tender.

He held Emma every chance he got.

And every time I saw the two of them together, I thought about how close our parents had come to erasing him forever.
