Chapter 8 - The Husband Who Was Assigned to Me

I stared at the photograph for almost an hour.
Grant.
Charles.
My father.
Together.
The three people who had shaped my entire life.
Two betrayed me.
One had hidden the truth.
But one question remained.
Why would my father allow Grant near me?
Unless…
he didn’t.
I immediately called Evelyn.
“Find everything about Grant and my father.”
“Clara—”
“Everything.”
She understood.
This was no longer about discovering betrayal.
It was about discovering the truth.
Two hours later, she called back.
Her voice was quiet.
“Your father knew Grant.”
“How?”
“Grant worked as an analyst for one of your father’s subsidiaries.”
I felt sick.
“So he was planted.”
“Yes.”
“By Charles?”
Another pause.
“No.”
That surprised me.
“Then who?”
Evelyn said:
“Your father.”
I froze.
“No.”
“Clara, listen.”
“I’m listening.”
“Your father hired Grant because he suspected Charles was building a network around him.”
I sat down.
“He used Grant as an informant.”
“Yes.”
Everything became confusing.
The man who betrayed me…
was originally sent to protect me?
Then why did he become the enemy?
Evelyn continued.
“Something changed.”
“What?”
“Grant stopped reporting.”
My voice lowered.
“When?”
“After meeting you.”
I closed my eyes.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because maybe the beginning was real.
Maybe he did love me.
Maybe somewhere along the way…
he chose power over us.
A new message arrived.
From Grant.
We need to talk. Alone.
I almost ignored it.
But I knew.
Some answers would only come from him.
We met at an abandoned office building owned by my father’s company.
Grant looked different.
Not confident.
Not arrogant.
Tired.
“You know.”
I stared at him.
“I know enough.”
He looked away.
“Then you know I didn’t start this.”
“You participated.”
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised me.
“Why?”
He swallowed.
“Because Charles had something over me.”
“What?”
“My family.”
I watched him carefully.
A lie?
A half-truth?
Maybe.
But there was real pain there.
“What did Charles threaten?”
Grant looked at me.
“My younger sister.”
I froze.
“He threatened to destroy her life.”
“That doesn’t excuse what you did.”
“I know.”
The silence between us was heavy.
Then he said:
“When I married you, I was supposed to gather information.”
My heart tightened.
“But then?”
He looked down.
“Then Ellie was born.”
A pause.
“And everything changed.”
I said nothing.
“I realized Charles didn’t see people.”
“He saw assets.”
“He saw you as a key.”
“And Ellie as leverage.”
I looked at him.
“Then why did you turn on me?”
His answer was quiet.
“Because Charles found out I cared.”
The words hurt.
Because they explained everything.
Not forgiven.
Not erased.
But explained.
Grant looked at me.
“I tried to get away.”
“Too late.”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Too late.”
Then he handed me a small envelope.
“What is this?”
“The last thing your father gave me.”
I opened it.
Inside was a single key.
A physical key.
Old.
Metal.
With one word engraved:
BLUEBIRD.
Grant whispered:
“Your father told me if anything happened to him…”
A pause.
“He wanted you to have this.”
I looked at the key.
“What does it open?”
Grant’s expression changed.
“Not what.”
May you like
A pause.
“Who.”
