Chapter 5 - The Custody War Begins

I arrived at the airport twenty minutes later.

But Grant was already gone.

The private terminal was silent.

Too silent.

That was always a bad sign.

People who had nothing to hide did not disappear quietly.

I approached the security desk.

“My husband left with my daughter.”

The employee looked uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Mercer…”

The way he said my name told me he knew.

“What?”

He looked at the screen.

“He showed legal authorization.”

My heart tightened.

“What authorization?”

He hesitated.

“A temporary custody agreement.”

A fake one.

Or a prepared one.

Grant had moved faster than I expected.

He had been waiting for this moment.

Not planning an escape.

Executing one.

I immediately called Evelyn.

“Check the court system.”

Seconds passed.

Then she answered.

Her voice was different.

Concerned.

“Clara.”

“What?”

“There is a filing.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“When?”

“Today.”

Impossible.

“How did he get approval?”

Silence.

Then:

“He didn’t.”

I stopped walking.

“What?”

“The judge’s signature is not real.”

A wave of anger moved through me.

He forged it.

He was willing to use the law itself as a weapon.

“Where is Ellie?”

“We’re tracking the vehicle.”

I ended the call.

For the first time in my life…

I felt the instinct to act before thinking.

But I stopped.

Because that was what Grant wanted.

A desperate mother.

An emotional reaction.

A mistake he could use against me.

So I did what my father taught me.

I became calm.

The vehicle was located forty minutes later.

Not at an airport.

Not at a hotel.

At an abandoned corporate building.

A place connected to Bluebird Holdings.

That was when I understood.

Grant never intended to run.

He intended to force me there.

The building was dark when I entered.

My security team moved silently.

Inside, I found Ellie.

Safe.

Sleeping.

My heart nearly broke.

Then I saw Grant.

Standing beside a desk.

And beside him…

was Charles Whitmore.

The man from the photograph.

Grant smiled.

“You finally came.”

I looked at Ellie.

Then at him.

“Let her go.”

Charles laughed.

“You still don’t understand.”

I stared at him.

“Understand what?”

He stepped forward.

“Ellie is not just your daughter.”

I felt my body go cold.

“She is the successor.”

“To what?”

Charles smiled.

“Everything your father built.”

Grant looked at me.

“You thought I wanted your money.”

He shook his head.

“I wanted access.”

I stared at him.

“To Bluebird.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Charles answered.

“Because Bluebird contains the only thing standing between us and complete control.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“The original ownership records.”

A pause.

“The names of everyone who secretly owns parts of your father’s empire.”

I understood.

Bluebird was not an asset.

It was a weapon.

A list of hidden power.

And Ellie was the key because my father trusted only one bloodline.

Mine.

“You used my husband.”

Charles smiled.

“No.”

He looked at Grant.

“Your husband volunteered.”

The words hit.

Grant looked away.

And I finally saw the truth.

He was not a victim.

He was not trapped.

He chose this.

He chose power.

He chose greed.

He chose them.

“You were never going to give Ellie back.”

Grant looked at me.

“I was going to make sure she had a better future.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You wanted a future where you controlled her.”

The room became silent.

Then Ellie moved.

Her eyes opened.

“Mommy?”

Everything stopped.

Grant looked at her.

And for a brief second…

he looked guilty.

Human.

Then Charles spoke.

“Take the child.”

That moment changed everything.

Because Grant hesitated.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

May you like

He was not completely gone.

And that hesitation was the first weakness I could use.
