Chapter 15 - The Friend Who Stole an Empire

The name was impossible.

My father’s closest friend.

The man who stood beside him during every major decision.

The man who helped build the company.

The man who gave speeches at my father’s funeral.

Robert Hale.

I remembered him.

Everyone did.

He was the person people described as loyal.

Reliable.

Family.

And now Grant was telling me he was behind everything.

“No.”

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

Grant’s voice was quiet.

“I thought the same thing.”

“Where are you?”

“Trying to stay alive.”

The line went silent.

Then:

“Clara, you need to listen carefully.”

I moved away from everyone.

“What?”

“Robert was never protecting your father.”

A pause.

“He was waiting for him to die.”

My heart tightened.

Charles looked at me from across the cemetery.

He already knew.

That meant Grant was right.

“Why?”

Grant answered:

“Because your father was the only person who knew Robert’s real identity.”

My mind raced.

“Real identity?”

“He wasn’t Robert Hale.”

A pause.

“He was someone your father thought he buried years ago.”

The call ended.

I looked at my grandmother.

She saw my expression.

“What happened?”

I said one name.

“Robert Hale.”

Her face changed instantly.

And that terrified me more than anything.

Because my grandmother had faced Charles.

She had faced everything.

But that name scared her.

“No.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“No, he was gone.”

I looked at her.

“You know him.”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

She looked toward my father’s grave.

Then said:

“Your grandfather’s first mistake.”

The words chilled me.

“What does that mean?”

Before she could answer, every phone on the cemetery grounds rang.

Mine.

Charles’s.

My grandmother’s.

Noah’s.

Everyone.

One message.

One sender.

Robert Hale.

You finally found the beginning.

A second message appeared.

Now I will show you the ending.

The cemetery lights turned on.

A projector hidden among the trees activated.

A video appeared.

My father.

Alive.

Years earlier.

Sitting across from Robert.

My father looked exhausted.

Afraid.

And Robert was smiling.

The video began.

My father spoke first.

“If you are watching this, then Robert has returned.”

Everyone froze.

My father continued:

“I spent my life trying to stop him.”

A pause.

“But I failed.”

The screen showed Robert.

Younger.

Different.

My father continued:

“Because I never understood the truth.”

The video paused.

Then:

“Robert was never trying to steal Bluebird.”

My breathing stopped.

“He created it.”

Silence.

The impossible truth.

The man everyone trusted.

The man behind everything.

The creator.

My father’s voice continued:

“And the reason he wants Bluebird now…”

A pause.

“Is because Clara is the only person who can activate the final system.”

The screen went black.

Everyone looked at me.

Charles.

My grandmother.

Noah.

Even the night itself felt like it was waiting.

Then a final message appeared.

From Robert.

Come alone, Clara.

Bring the Bluebird key.

And I will tell you why your father was never the owner.

The message disappeared.

I looked at the people around me.

For the first time, I understood.

This was not a fight over inheritance.

Not money.

Not companies.

Not power.

It was a fight over the truth of who created everything.

And why.

I held the key in my hand.

The key that started everything.

And I knew one thing.

May you like

The next move would decide whether my family survived…

or whether my father’s final secret destroyed us all.
