Chapter 2 - The File My Father Buried

I thought freezing Grant’s accounts would be the end.
I was wrong.
It was the beginning.
Three hours after I left the restaurant, I received a message from my family’s legal division.
No greeting.
No explanation.
Just one sentence.
Your father’s sealed archive has been opened.
I stared at the screen.
My father had been dead for five years.
But he had always planned ahead.
He was the kind of man who believed every problem eventually arrived.
The only question was whether you were prepared when it did.
I drove to the Mercer family estate that night.
Not Grant’s estate.
Mine.
The property my father built before Grant ever entered my life.
The property Grant slowly started calling “ours.”
The security gate opened before I reached it.
Inside the main office was a woman I had known since childhood.
Evelyn Carter.
My father’s attorney.
She placed a folder on the desk.
“I hoped you would never need this.”
I looked at her.
“What is it?”
She hesitated.
“That depends on whether Grant knows about it.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
She opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Financial records.
Transfer agreements.
Private investigations.
And then I saw it.
Grant Mercer.
The date shocked me.
Two years before our wedding.
Before Ellie was born.
Before he told me he loved me.
“He was investigated?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Your father had concerns.”
“What concerns?”
She looked at the documents.
“Grant was not interested in you.”
The words hurt.
Even though I already knew.
“He was interested in what came with you.”
I turned the page.
The next document was a custody preparation file.
My hands went cold.
“What is this?”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“Something your father wanted hidden until you were ready.”
I read the title.
Parental Fitness Evaluation Request.
My heart stopped.
Grant had prepared this.
Before I discovered the affair.
Before he humiliated me.
Before he asked me to leave.
He had been building a case.
Against me.
“He was going to take Ellie.”
Evelyn nodded.
“He planned to argue that your family responsibilities made you unstable.”
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
The man who abandoned his wife emotionally.
The man who cheated.
The man who tried to control me.
Was preparing to prove I was the problem.
Then I saw another document.
A confidential family record.
One line highlighted in blue.
BLUEBIRD BENEFICIARY: ELLIE MERCER
I stared.
“What is Bluebird?”
Evelyn closed the folder slightly.
“That is why your father created the archive.”
“What does my daughter have to do with it?”
She looked at me.
“Everything.”
The room felt smaller.
“Ellie is three years old.”
“I know.”
“She doesn’t understand any of this.”
“She doesn’t need to.”
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“Your father believed someone would eventually try to use Ellie as a key.”
“A key to what?”
She looked toward the window.
“To something powerful enough that people would destroy families for it.”
I thought about Grant.
His sudden interest in custody.
His obsession with controlling finances.
His relationship with Vanessa.
None of it was random.
He wasn’t leaving me.
He was replacing me.
And Ellie was the reason.
I closed the folder.
“Where is the rest of the file?”
Evelyn looked uncomfortable.
“Missing.”
“Who took it?”
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because only a few people had access.
And one of them was my husband.
Grant Mercer had not just betrayed me.
May you like
He had been searching for something my father died protecting.
And now I knew why.
