Chapter 11 - The Brother Hidden From the World

Finding Noah Mercer was easier than I expected.

That worried me.

People who wanted to disappear usually did not leave trails.

Unless they wanted to be found.

The address led me to a quiet neighborhood.

Nothing like the world I grew up in.

No security.

No luxury.

No corporate buildings.

Just a small house.

Normal.

Almost painfully normal.

I stood outside for several seconds.

Then knocked.

The door opened.

And the man standing there looked at me like he had been waiting.

He was younger than I expected.

Early thirties.

Dark hair.

The same eyes as my father.

My heart knew before my mind accepted it.

“You’re Clara.”

Not a question.

A statement.

“How do you know me?”

He smiled sadly.

“Because I’ve known about you my entire life.”

The answer hurt.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

I stepped inside.

“Who are you?”

He looked at me.

“My name is Noah.”

The silence said everything.

“You’re my brother.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted answers.

But there was something about him.

Something familiar.

The same calmness my father had.

The same sadness.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Noah looked down.

“Because they were afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of what would happen if you knew the truth.”

I laughed softly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

A pause.

“But nobody explains why.”

Noah walked toward a bookshelf.

He pulled out an old notebook.

“My father wrote this.”

My breath stopped.

“My father?”

He nodded.

“Your father.”

I opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Inside was one sentence:

Clara, if Noah ever finds you, trust him.

My eyes filled.

Another secret.

Another message.

Another person my father trusted.

Noah sat down.

“Your father didn’t abandon me.”

I looked at him.

“What happened?”

“He protected me.”

“From who?”

Noah’s expression changed.

“From Charles.”

I listened.

“Charles wanted access to Bluebird before you were born.”

“How?”

“Through me.”

I frowned.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Noah looked at me.

“He believed I was the original successor.”

The words hit.

“Then why wasn’t he?”

“Because your father changed the system.”

“To me.”

Noah nodded.

“He realized power should not belong to the person born first.”

A pause.

“It should belong to the person who could handle it.”

I thought about my father.

He always said inheritance was not about blood.

It was about responsibility.

Noah continued.

“When Charles discovered the change, he tried to use me.”

“How?”

“He threatened my mother.”

My expression changed.

“Your mother?”

Noah nodded.

“She died because of what they did.”

Silence.

The same cycle.

Everyone connected to Bluebird had lost someone.

Noah looked at me.

“That’s why I stayed hidden.”

“Why come out now?”

He looked toward the window.

“Because Charles found Ellie.”

My heart tightened.

“He knows?”

“He knows everything.”

I stood.

“We need to get her.”

Noah nodded.

But before we moved, his phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

I watched him.

“What happened?”

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Grant.”

My stomach tightened.

“What about him?”

Noah looked at me.

“He escaped custody.”

The room became silent.

“How?”

Noah looked toward the door.

“He didn’t escape.”

A pause.

“He was released.”

“By who?”

May you like

Noah’s answer chilled me.

“Someone inside your family.”
