CHAPTER 18 — THE NAME IN THE LEDGER

Alejandro stared at the first page.

His own name was written in black ink.

ALEJANDRO MONTERO.

Beneath it was a date.

A date from eight years earlier.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does it mean?”

Alejandro didn't answer.

He turned the page.

There were columns.

Names.

Amounts.

Locations.

Codes.

And beside his name was a single word:

SUBJECT.

Alejandro's stomach tightened.

Gabriel smiled.

“Now you understand.”

“No.”

Alejandro looked up.

“I understand that you forged another record.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“This one is real.”

He turned several pages.

“Your father discovered Black Serpent. He tried to destroy it. So I needed someone who could replace him.”

Alejandro stared at the ledger.

“You.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel pointed at him.

“You were never supposed to be the enemy.”

He turned another page.

“You were supposed to become me.”

Daniel looked at his father.

Alejandro's jaw tightened.

“I would never become you.”

Gabriel smiled.

“That's what I thought too.”

He pointed toward another entry.

MEMORY CONDITIONING — ALEJANDRO MONTERO.

Beside it were dates.

Doctors.

Payments.

Treatment codes.

Everything matched the memories Alejandro had recovered.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note.

SECONDARY CONDITIONING REQUIRED AFTER CHILDREN ARE REMOVED.

Alejandro froze.

“The children…”

Gabriel nodded.

“Daniel was removed first.”

Then he pointed to another line.

“Isabella was removed later.”

“You erased my family.”

“I reorganized it.”

Alejandro's expression darkened.

“You call kidnapping organization?”

Gabriel shrugged.

“Every empire requires sacrifices.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You stole my childhood.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“I gave you purpose.”

“You gave me nightmares.”

For the first time, Gabriel's smile disappeared.

Daniel continued.

“You told me my father abandoned me.”

Gabriel said nothing.

“You told me my mother didn't want me.”

Silence.

“You made me believe I was alone.”

Daniel's voice cracked.

“And now I know the truth.”

Gabriel stared at him.

“You are weak.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Alejandro.

“I'm finally free.”

Gabriel suddenly pulled a small device from his coat.

A red light blinked.

Alejandro recognized it.

“What is that?”

Gabriel smiled.

“The end of your empire.”

He pressed the button.

A distant explosion shook the building.

The floor trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Daniel grabbed the wall.

“What did you do?”

Gabriel walked toward the vault exit.

“I built this tower.”

He looked back.

“And I know exactly where it will fall.”

Upstairs, Lucía heard the explosion.

The windows rattled.

Isabella screamed.

“Mommy!”

Lucía pulled her close.

Mateo looked toward the elevator.

“That came from underground.”

Rafael's face went pale.

“The vault.”

Sofia stared at him.

“What's in there?”

“The original evidence.”

Valeria looked toward the stairs.

“Then we have to get Alejandro.”

They ran.

Below the tower, water began rushing into the vault.

Gabriel had opened emergency flood valves.

The ancient records began disappearing beneath the rising water.

Alejandro grabbed the ledger.

Daniel pulled open a metal cabinet.

“There's more!”

Hard drives.

Documents.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Alejandro threw them into a waterproof case.

Gabriel stood at the doorway.

“You can't save everything.”

Alejandro looked at him.

“I don't need everything.”

He held up the ledger.

“I just need enough.”

Gabriel laughed.

“You think courts can defeat me?”

“Not courts.”

Alejandro stepped forward.

“Evidence.”

Gabriel's smile faded.

Then a voice echoed through the corridor.

“That's exactly what we have.”

Gabriel turned.

Lucía stood at the end of the hallway.

Beside her were Mateo, Rafael, Sofia, and Valeria.

And Isabella.

Gabriel stared at the child.

For a moment, he looked almost fascinated.

Then Isabella stepped behind Lucía.

Gabriel whispered,

“The heir.”

Lucía answered,

“No.”

She held Isabella's hand.

“My daughter.”

Gabriel raised his gun.

Alejandro moved between them.

“You're finished.”

Gabriel aimed.

Before he could fire, Rafael stepped behind him.

“Drop it.”

Gabriel slowly turned.

Rafael was holding a gun.

His hand shook.

Gabriel laughed.

“You?”

Rafael's eyes hardened.

“You threatened Sofia.”

Gabriel smiled.

“She was always leverage.”

Rafael's finger tightened around the trigger.

“She is my daughter.”

Gabriel's expression changed.

“You betrayed your family.”

Rafael shook his head.

“No.”

He lowered the weapon slightly.

“I betrayed you.”

Then police sirens filled the building.

Gabriel looked toward the elevator.

Too late.

Mateo stepped forward.

“It's over.”

Gabriel suddenly threw a flash device onto the floor.

White light exploded.

Everyone covered their eyes.

When Alejandro could see again, Gabriel was gone.

But something remained on the floor.

A single page.

Alejandro picked it up.

At the top was another name.

ELENA MONTERO.

Under it:

FINAL AUTHORIZATION — MEMORY PROJECT ECLIPSE.

Lucía stared at the page.

“No…”

Rafael looked away.

Alejandro's voice was quiet.

“My mother.”

Then they heard Elena's voice through Mateo's radio.

“She wants to talk to you.”

Alejandro closed his eyes.

“Where is she?”

“In the lobby.”

He looked at Lucía.

“This ends tonight.”

They found Elena sitting against the marble wall.

Blood stained her clothes.

Paramedics were treating her wound.

She looked at Alejandro.

“I know what you're thinking.”

Alejandro knelt.

“Tell me the truth.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I signed the authorization.”

Lucía stared at her.

“You signed away my children.”

“I was afraid.”

“You let Gabriel destroy us.”

“Yes.”

Elena began to cry silently.

“I thought if I obeyed him, I could keep Alejandro alive.”

Alejandro's voice was cold.

“You should have told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The night Lucía disappeared.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

Elena looked at him.

“I left a message in your study.”

“What message?”

Her eyes filled with regret.

“I told you to remember the blue door.”

Alejandro's face changed.

The blue door.

A memory surfaced.

A hallway.

A door.

Lucía crying.

A baby crying.

And Elena whispering:

“Run.”

Alejandro staggered backward.

The memory was returning.

All of it.

Not fragments.

Everything.

He remembered holding Daniel.

He remembered Isabella's birth.

He remembered Lucía begging him not to trust Gabriel.

He remembered being dragged into the clinic.

He remembered the drugs.

The doctors.

The machine.

And finally—

his mother's face.

Crying.

Watching from behind the glass.

Alejandro looked at Elena.

“You were there.”

She nodded.

“I couldn't stop them.”

“But you could have tried.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Elena whispered,

“I am sorry.”

Alejandro stood.

“I don't forgive you.”

Elena nodded.

“I don't expect you to.”

He turned away.

Then Isabella approached her.

Everyone froze.

The little girl looked at Elena.

“Are you Grandma?”

Elena broke.

“Yes.”

Isabella studied her.

Then quietly said,

“Daddy says bad people can still make good choices.”

Alejandro looked at his daughter.

Elena covered her face.

For the first time in years, she cried without hiding it.

Outside, federal agents surrounded the tower.

Victor was taken away.

Several Black Serpent accounts had been frozen.

But Gabriel was still missing.

Alejandro stood beside Lucía beneath the flashing lights.

Daniel stood on his other side.

Isabella held Lucía's hand.

Then Mateo approached.

“We found the car.”

“Gabriel?”

“No.”

Mateo handed Alejandro a photograph.

The vehicle had been found abandoned at the harbor.

Inside was a bloodstained coat.

And a note.

Alejandro unfolded it.

Three words.

COME TO THE DOCKS.

Below it was another line.

BRING LUCÍA.

Lucía looked at him.

“He knows where we'll go.”

Alejandro folded the note.

“No.”

His eyes hardened.

“He thinks he does.”

In the distance, a ship's horn sounded.

And somewhere beyond the harbor lights—

May you like

Gabriel was waiting.

Chapter 20 would reveal it all.
