Chapter 12 — The Grandfather's Command

The old man stood beneath the emergency lights.

Silver hair.

Black suit.

Gold serpent pin.

He looked nothing like the monster Alejandro had imagined.

That was what frightened him most.

Monsters were supposed to look monstrous.

This man looked like a grandfather.

A respectable one.

A man who could sit at a Christmas dinner table and smile for photographs.

A man who could shake hands with senators, judges, CEOs, and bankers.

A man nobody would ever suspect.

Esteban stared at him from behind the glass.

His voice trembled.

“Gabriel.”

The old man smiled.

“It's been a long time, son.”

Alejandro turned toward his father.

“You knew he was alive?”

Esteban closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You knew my grandfather was running the Black Serpent?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe he was dead?”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Gabriel Montero slowly walked toward Isabella.

Alejandro immediately stepped in front of his daughter.

“Don't come any closer.”

Gabriel stopped.

He looked at Alejandro.

Then at Lucía.

Then back at Isabella.

“You have your father's eyes.”

Alejandro's voice was cold.

“You're not touching her.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Still protective.”

“She's my daughter.”

“She's my granddaughter.”

“That doesn't give you the right to her.”

Gabriel's smile disappeared.

“It gives me more right than you understand.”

Alejandro took another step forward.

“No.”

Gabriel's eyes hardened.

“Do you know what your father did?”

Alejandro looked at Esteban.

Gabriel continued.

“He betrayed our family.”

Esteban answered through the intercom.

“I saved my son.”

“You destroyed everything I built.”

“You destroyed everyone who opposed you.”

Gabriel turned toward him.

“Because opposition creates weakness.”

Esteban shook his head.

“Power without conscience is not strength.”

Gabriel laughed softly.

“You always were sentimental.”

Alejandro looked between them.

“What do you want from Isabella?”

Gabriel's expression changed.

“She carries the bloodline.”

“So?”

“She is the last legal heir.”

Alejandro frowned.

“To what?”

Gabriel smiled.

“Everything.”

He gestured toward the files.

“The Montero estate.”

“The international holdings.”

“The private trusts.”

“The properties.”

“The offshore accounts.”

Alejandro shook his head.

“You already have more money than you could spend.”

“This was never about money.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“It is about control.”

Lucía tightened her grip around Isabella.

Gabriel looked at her.

“You were always the problem.”

Lucía stared.

“Me?”

“You made Alejandro independent.”

Gabriel's voice was almost conversational.

“Before you, he obeyed his family.”

“And after you?”

“He began asking questions.”

Lucía said nothing.

Gabriel continued.

“You taught him to choose love over power.”

Alejandro's eyes hardened.

“That's what you're afraid of.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Yes.”

Then he raised his hand.

A guard immediately stepped forward.

“Take the girl.”

Alejandro moved.

Mateo fired first.

The bullet struck the wall beside the guard.

Everyone ducked.

“Run!” Mateo shouted.

Alejandro grabbed Isabella.

Lucía followed.

Rafael pulled Sofia toward the opposite corridor.

Chaos erupted.

Security alarms screamed.

Doors slammed shut.

Red lights flashed.

Victor disappeared through a side exit.

Elena remained frozen.

She watched Alejandro run.

Then looked at Gabriel.

“You promised you wouldn't hurt him.”

Gabriel stared at her.

“I promised nothing.”

Elena's face changed.

“You said Alejandro would be safe.”

“He was.”

“Until now.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You failed.”

Elena's voice broke.

“I did everything you asked.”

“And still you failed.”

Gabriel walked away.

Elena followed.

“Please.”

He stopped.

“Please don't hurt my son.”

Gabriel looked over his shoulder.

“Your son stopped being yours when you chose the organization over him.”

Elena collapsed against the wall.

Alejandro, Lucía, Isabella, Mateo, Rafael, and Sofia escaped into the underground parking level.

They reached a locked gate.

Mateo pulled out a tool.

“Give me thirty seconds.”

“We don't have thirty seconds.”

Behind them—

footsteps.

Alejandro looked back.

Guards.

“Ten seconds.”

Mateo worked faster.

The gate opened.

They ran.

A black SUV waited at the end of the tunnel.

The driver's door opened.

Alejandro raised his weapon.

Then stopped.

Valeria.

“Get in!”

Lucía stared at her.

“How did you get here?”

“I followed the tracker.”

“What tracker?”

Valeria pointed at Alejandro's phone.

“I put one on your car.”

Alejandro didn't ask why.

“Drive.”

They jumped inside.

The SUV sped into the night.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Sofia looked at Rafael.

“Dad.”

He turned.

She touched his injured shoulder.

“You came for me.”

Rafael smiled weakly.

“Of course.”

“You're bleeding.”

“I've had worse.”

Sofia laughed through tears.

Alejandro watched them.

Then looked at Isabella.

She was asleep against Lucía's chest.

For the first time, Alejandro saw the image he had lost seven years ago.

His wife.

His daughter.

Together.

Exactly where they were supposed to be.

But he knew it wouldn't last.

Not yet.

Lucía looked at him.

“You're thinking about him.”

“Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

Alejandro nodded.

“We need to find out what he wants.”

Esteban's voice suddenly came through the phone.

“Don't.”

Alejandro looked at the screen.

His father's number.

“Dad?”

Esteban spoke quietly.

“Don't investigate Gabriel.”

“Why?”

“Because you're not ready.”

Alejandro's expression hardened.

“I've been lied to for seven years.”

“That's exactly why.”

“What don't I know?”

Silence.

Then Esteban said:

“The night Isabella was born…”

Alejandro waited.

“I wasn't there to save her.”

Lucía looked up.

“What?”

Esteban continued.

“I was there because Gabriel ordered me to take her.”

Lucía's face went white.

Alejandro stared.

“You were going to take your own granddaughter?”

“I was supposed to.”

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Esteban's voice cracked.

“Because when I held her…”

He stopped.

“I couldn't do it.”

Alejandro closed his eyes.

“And Gabriel?”

“He found out.”

“What happened?”

“He ordered me killed.”

Alejandro looked at Lucía.

Then at Isabella.

“Then why is Isabella still alive?”

Esteban's answer came slowly.

“Because Rafael took her before Gabriel's men could.”

Rafael looked down.

Alejandro stared at him.

“You saved her.”

Rafael nodded.

“I did.”

“And Elena?”

“She thought Isabella was dead.”

Lucía whispered:

“So why did Gabriel say she was the last legal heir?”

Esteban went silent.

Alejandro noticed.

“Dad.”

No answer.

“Dad!”

Esteban finally said:

“Because Isabella isn't the only heir.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

“There is another child.”

Lucía stared.

“What other child?”

Esteban whispered:

“The first child.”

The line went dead.

Everyone in the vehicle went silent.

Alejandro slowly turned toward Lucía.

She was crying.

“I thought Isabella was the first.”

“So did I.”

Rafael looked frightened.

“There was another pregnancy?”

Lucía shook her head.

“I don't remember.”

Alejandro stared out the window.

Another child.

Another erased life.

Another secret.

And this time—

even Rafael looked afraid.
