Chapter 11 — The Bloodline Lie

Alejandro couldn't take his eyes off the birth certificate.

The words blurred.

Father:

ESTEBAN MONTERO.

Mother:

LUCÍA MONTERO.

Child:

ISABELLA MONTERO.

It was impossible.

Disgusting.

Terrifying.

Alejandro looked at his mother.

“What did you do?”

Elena smiled.

“I didn't do anything.”

“You forged this.”

“No.”

She tapped the document.

“It is original.”

Lucía shook her head.

“That's not true.”

Elena looked at her.

“You remember giving birth.”

“Yes.”

“You remember Esteban being there.”

“Yes.”

“You remember him holding the baby.”

Lucía's face went pale.

“But that doesn't mean—”

“Exactly.”

Elena smiled.

“You assumed.”

Alejandro looked toward his father.

Esteban was watching through the glass.

His expression was devastated.

Alejandro turned toward him.

“Dad!”

Esteban looked away.

Alejandro's voice rose.

“Is it true?”

Esteban slowly shook his head.

“No.”

Relief hit Alejandro.

Then Esteban added:

“But the certificate was created for a reason.”

Alejandro froze.

“What reason?”

Esteban looked at Elena.

“She wanted you to believe Isabella belonged to me.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew you would destroy everything to protect your child.”

Elena's expression remained calm.

“And she was right.”

Victor stepped closer.

“Give us the company.”

“No.”

“Then Isabella goes somewhere you'll never find her.”

Alejandro looked at Sofia.

“Release her.”

Victor shook his head.

“First, sign.”

Rafael suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

Rafael's laughter was quiet.

Broken.

Almost hysterical.

Elena looked at him.

“What's funny?”

“You still don't understand.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“Understand what?”

Rafael looked at Alejandro.

“The birth certificate is a fake.”

Elena's face changed.

Rafael continued.

“I replaced the original.”

Silence.

Elena stared at him.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“You betrayed me.”

Rafael shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Isabella.

“I betrayed you.”

Elena's face twisted with rage.

Rafael continued.

“I knew you would eventually use the child against Alejandro.”

“So I changed the record.”

“You're lying.”

Rafael reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a sealed envelope.

“This is the original.”

Elena lunged.

Mateo stepped out of the shadows.

His weapon was raised.

“Don't.”

Rafael opened the envelope.

Inside was another birth certificate.

Mother:

LUCÍA MONTERO.

Father:

ALEJANDRO MONTERO.

Child:

ISABELLA MONTERO.

Elena stared.

Victor's face hardened.

“You think that changes anything?”

Rafael smiled.

“It changes everything.”

He held up a second document.

A court order.

“Isabella was legally named heir to Esteban's estate.”

Victor's eyes widened.

“And that means?”

Rafael looked at Alejandro.

“It means Elena and Victor have spent seven years trying to remove a legal heir they couldn't legally eliminate.”

Alejandro understood.

“The inheritance.”

“Yes.”

Rafael nodded.

“Your father's fortune was placed into an irrevocable trust.”

Victor stepped forward.

“Where is the trust?”

Rafael smiled.

“With Isabella.”

Victor looked at the little girl.

“What?”

Rafael continued.

“Your father anticipated what Elena would do.”

“He transferred control before he supposedly died.”

Alejandro stared.

“Then why did he let everyone believe he was dead?”

Esteban finally answered.

“Because I was trying to protect you.”

His voice came through the intercom.

“Elena had already infiltrated the company.”

Alejandro looked at him.

“You should have told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Before the accident.”

Alejandro froze.

“What accident?”

Esteban's eyes filled with pain.

“The crash that everyone said killed me.”

Alejandro shook his head.

“You died four years ago.”

“No.”

Esteban looked at Elena.

“She tried to kill me.”

Elena's expression changed.

Esteban continued.

“Victor's men caused the crash.”

“But I survived.”

“And Elena decided to finish the job.”

Alejandro's hands tightened.

“The hospital records.”

“Changed.”

“The death certificate.”

“Forged.”

“The funeral.”

“A body double.”

Alejandro stared.

“And you let me mourn you?”

“I had no choice.”

“You had four years.”

Esteban looked down.

“I spent four years trying to recover enough memory to expose them.”

Alejandro suddenly noticed something.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The Black Serpent.”

Victor's face changed.

Alejandro continued.

“It's not just a criminal organization.”

“No.”

“It controls hospitals.”

“Yes.”

“Lawyers.”

“Yes.”

“Banks.”

“Yes.”

“Funeral homes.”

“Yes.”

Alejandro looked at Elena.

“And our family.”

Elena said nothing.

Alejandro stepped closer.

“You didn't build it.”

For the first time, Elena's smile disappeared.

“You inherited it.”

Silence.

Victor slowly looked at Elena.

“What?”

Elena turned toward him.

Alejandro noticed the fear in her eyes.

Real fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

He understood.

“You weren't the top.”

Elena stared at him.

“You were working for someone else.”

Victor grabbed her arm.

“Who?”

Elena pulled away.

“Don't.”

“Who?”

She looked toward the ceiling.

“I can't.”

Alejandro stepped forward.

“You've destroyed my family.”

“I was protecting it!”

Her voice suddenly broke.

“You don't understand!”

“Then explain!”

Elena began crying.

“Your grandfather created the organization.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

“He used it to control the family fortune.”

Esteban closed his eyes.

Elena continued.

“When I married your father, I tried to leave.”

“Then why didn't you?”

“Because they threatened you.”

Alejandro's anger faltered.

“They said they'd kill you.”

Elena looked at him.

“They had people everywhere.”

“I became their servant because I wanted you alive.”

Rafael stared at her.

“And Isabella?”

Elena looked at him.

“I was told the child had to disappear.”

“By whom?”

Elena shook her head.

“I never saw his face.”

Alejandro's eyes narrowed.

“His?”

Elena whispered:

“The man who controls the Black Serpent.”

Victor suddenly stepped backward.

Elena looked at him.

“Victor knows.”

Victor's face went pale.

“You're insane.”

“No.”

Elena pointed at him.

“He has met him.”

Alejandro turned toward Victor.

“Who?”

Victor said nothing.

Alejandro stepped closer.

“Who?”

Victor's silence lasted several seconds.

Then he whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

Alejandro froze.

“My grandfather is dead.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Esteban.

“He's alive.”

Esteban's face turned white.

Victor continued:

“He has been running the Black Serpent for thirty years.”

The room went silent.

Then every light in the building suddenly went out.

A voice came through the speakers.

Old.

Calm.

Powerful.

“Enough.”

Everyone froze.

The voice continued:

“Alejandro…”

Alejandro looked toward the ceiling.

“You have spent your entire life asking the wrong questions.”

A pause.

“The question isn't who stole your family.”

The voice became colder.

“The question is…”

“…who owns it now?”

A steel door opened at the end of the corridor.

A man in his seventies stepped into the light.

Silver hair.

Black suit.

A gold serpent pin on his collar.

Esteban whispered:

“Father…”

Alejandro stared.

His grandfather was alive.

And he was standing only twenty feet away.

Then the old man looked directly at Isabella.

For the first time, his expression softened.

“Bring me my granddaughter.”

Alejandro stepped in front of his daughter.

“No.”

The old man smiled.

“That wasn't a request.”

And somewhere behind them—

the hospital doors locked.

Every exit sealed.

The entire building went into lockdown.

Alejandro realized they had just walked into the heart of the Black Serpent.

And this time—

there would be no easy escape.
