CHAPTER 16 — THE MEMORY CARD

The archive was filling with gas.

Lucía could barely breathe.

Her hand closed around the tiny memory card hidden inside the silver pendant her father had given her years ago.

For seven years, she had carried that pendant without understanding why.

Now she finally knew.

It wasn't jewelry.

It was evidence.

“Lucía!”

Alejandro grabbed her arm.

“Move!”

Daniel stood between them and the doorway, his body tense.

Across the room, Victor raised his gun.

Behind him stood Gabriel.

The old man looked almost amused.

“You still don't understand,” Gabriel said.

Alejandro stared at him.

“Understand what?”

Gabriel's eyes moved to the pendant.

“That card contains nothing that can destroy me.”

Lucía's voice was barely above a whisper.

“Then why are you afraid of it?”

For the first time, Gabriel's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Alejandro saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Mateo,” Alejandro said quietly.

“Get everyone out.”

Mateo nodded.

Daniel grabbed Sofia's hand.

Rafael pulled Esteban toward the emergency exit.

Victor fired.

The bullet struck the metal cabinet beside Alejandro's head.

Everyone ducked.

Lucía stumbled.

Alejandro caught her.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“The baby.”

“I've got you.”

Another shot exploded through the archive.

Daniel moved first.

He knocked over a steel table, creating cover.

“Go!”

They ran.

Victor shouted behind them.

“Don't let them reach the elevator!”

The emergency lights flickered.

Smoke and chemical gas rolled across the ceiling.

Then the sprinklers came alive.

Water crashed down.

The lights died.

For several seconds, everything became darkness.

Alejandro heard Lucía breathing beside him.

Then Daniel's voice.

“Dad?”

Alejandro froze.

It was the first time Daniel had called him that.

He turned.

Daniel was standing in the darkness, soaked by the sprinklers.

Alejandro reached for him.

“I’m here.”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“I don't know how to be your son.”

Alejandro pulled him into his arms.

“You don't have to know yet.”

He held him tightly.

“Just stay with us.”

Daniel nodded against his shoulder.

Then a gunshot echoed from the archive.

Rafael appeared through the smoke.

“Gabriel is coming.”

They ran.

They reached a maintenance room beneath the estate.

Mateo locked the steel door.

Everyone was breathing heavily.

Lucía sat against the wall.

Alejandro knelt beside her.

“Show me the card.”

Lucía removed the tiny device from the pendant.

Mateo examined it.

“No computer here.”

“I have one,” Sofia said.

She opened her backpack.

Rafael stared at her.

“You brought a laptop into a gunfight?”

Sofia shrugged.

“You raised me.”

For the first time that night, Rafael almost smiled.

They connected the card.

A single folder appeared.

PROJECT ECLIPSE.

Lucía stared at the screen.

Her hands began trembling.

Alejandro noticed.

“What is it?”

“I don't know.”

Sofia opened the folder.

There were forty-three files.

Medical records.

Bank transfers.

Audio recordings.

Photographs.

Video files.

And one document marked:

ORIGINAL TIMELINE — DO NOT ALTER.

Alejandro clicked it.

The truth appeared.

Eight years earlier, Lucía had not met Alejandro seven years ago.

She had met him nearly nine years ago.

They had fallen in love.

They had secretly married.

Lucía became pregnant.

Daniel was born.

Then Gabriel discovered Lucía's father had found evidence against Black Serpent.

That was when everything changed.

Alejandro stared at the screen.

“Our entire relationship…”

“Was rewritten,” Lucía whispered.

The false dates.

The fake hospital records.

The fabricated separation.

The supposed miscarriage.

The lie that Daniel never existed.

All of it had been manufactured.

But there was more.

A video file.

Lucía clicked it.

Her father's face appeared.

He looked older.

Exhausted.

Afraid.

“If you're watching this,” he said, “then Gabriel has already taken control of the family.”

Lucía covered her mouth.

Her father continued.

“Gabriel Montero built Black Serpent decades ago. It isn't merely a criminal organization. It is an invisible network hidden inside legitimate institutions.”

Images appeared.

Banks.

Hospitals.

Law firms.

Hotels.

Political offices.

Security companies.

Judges.

Executives.

Everything connected.

Then came the final revelation.

“Gabriel didn't want Alejandro's money.”

Lucía stared at the screen.

“He wanted the Montero bloodline.”

The video continued.

“Because Esteban created a trust that cannot be controlled by one person. It requires both legitimate heirs.”

Alejandro looked at Isabella.

Then Daniel.

“The children.”

Lucía whispered.

“My children.”

Her father's voice became quieter.

“Daniel and Isabella were never accidents. They were the key.”

The video suddenly changed.

A document appeared.

A trust agreement.

At the bottom was Esteban's signature.

And another signature.

Gabriel Montero.

Alejandro's eyes widened.

“He signed it.”

Esteban stared at the screen.

“I knew.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Esteban looked broken.

“I knew Gabriel had built the organization.”

He lowered his head.

“But I thought I could stop him.”

Alejandro's voice hardened.

“You let him take our children.”

“I tried.”

Esteban's eyes filled with tears.

“He took Daniel first.”

Silence.

Then Esteban said something that made everyone freeze.

“And Isabella was never supposed to survive.”

Lucía closed her eyes.

Alejandro stood.

“Then why did she?”

Rafael answered.

“Because I disobeyed Gabriel.”

He looked at Alejandro.

“I took her.”

A notification appeared on Sofia's computer.

FILE UPLOADED — LIVE SERVER

Sofia frowned.

“I didn't upload that.”

Mateo stepped closer.

“Someone else did.”

Another message appeared.

YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.

Then another.

COME TO THE MONTERO TOWER.

And beneath it was a photograph.

Gabriel standing beside Victor.

Between them stood Elena.

Blood ran down her forehead.

She was alive.

But Gabriel was holding a gun against her head.

The final message appeared.

BRING THE CHILDREN.

Alejandro's face hardened.

“No.”

Lucía grabbed his hand.

“They'll kill her.”

Alejandro looked at the photograph.

For years, he had believed his mother was the monster.

Now he finally understood.

She had committed terrible things.

But Gabriel had always been holding the leash.

Alejandro stood.

“We're not going there to surrender.”

He looked at Daniel.

Then Isabella.

“We're going there to end this.”

Outside, thunder rolled across the night.

And somewhere inside Montero Tower, Gabriel was waiting.

May you like

But he didn't know one thing.

The entire truth was already uploading to the world.
