CHAPTER 7 — THE NAME THEY ERASED

The house was finally quiet.
For the first time in days, nobody was screaming.
Nobody was running.
Nobody was being chased.
Livia was asleep upstairs.
Marco was beside her.
Amelia had finally stopped crying.
Elena was sitting in the library, staring at the old photographs.
And Clara stood alone by the window.
She should have felt relieved.
Instead, she felt afraid.
Because there was one question nobody had answered.
If Daniel was alive…
if Amelia was alive…
if the Circle had lied about so many deaths…
then how many other people had been erased?
Clara turned when she heard footsteps.
Alessandro entered the room.
“You're still awake.”
“So are you.”
He smiled faintly.
“I couldn't sleep.”
“Neither could I.”
He walked toward her.
“Are you thinking about Eleanor?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Clara looked toward the hallway.
“The seventh child.”
Alessandro's expression changed.
They had found six.
Livia.
Marco.
Amelia.
Daniel.
Elena.
And one more child whose identity was still buried somewhere inside the Circle's records.
But the seventh child had never been found.
Clara whispered:
“Someone is still missing.”
Alessandro nodded.
“We'll find them.”
“You don't know if they're alive.”
“No.”
“Then why are you so certain?”
He looked into her eyes.
“Because I spent six years believing you were dead.”
He took her hand.
“I won't make that mistake again.”
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
Then a noise came from upstairs.
A loud crash.
They both froze.
“Livia?”
Alessandro ran toward the stairs.
Clara followed.
They reached the children's bedroom.
The door was open.
The window was shattered.
Marco was standing beside the bed.
Livia was crying.
And on the floor was a small black envelope.
Alessandro picked it up.
There was no name.
Only a symbol.
Three interlocking circles.
The Circle.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A little boy.
Approximately six years old.
Standing beside a woman.
Clara stared at the image.
Her face went white.
“I know him.”
Alessandro looked at her.
“Who is he?”
Clara touched the photograph with trembling fingers.
“That boy…”
She swallowed.
“…was born before Livia.”
Alessandro's eyes widened.
“That's impossible.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed toward the boy.
“I remember him.”
THE MEMORY THAT RETURNED
Clara sat down.
Alessandro knelt beside her.
“Tell me.”
“I saw him.”
“When?”
“At the hospital.”
“During the birth?”
“No.”
“Then when?”
Clara closed her eyes.
The memory came slowly.
A hallway.
A blue door.
A nurse carrying a baby.
A woman arguing.
A little boy crying.
And a man standing behind the glass.
Vittorio.
Clara opened her eyes.
“He wasn't born after Livia.”
Alessandro frowned.
“Then when?”
“Two years earlier.”
“Whose child?”
Clara stared at the photograph.
“I don't know.”
“Why would you know him?”
“Because he was in the same hospital.”
Alessandro looked confused.
“What was he doing there?”
Clara whispered:
“Being tested.”
Silence.
The photograph slipped from her hand.
“He was one of the first children.”
Alessandro picked it up.
“The first?”
“Yes.”
“Before us?”
“Yes.”
“Then why does he look six?”
“Because that photograph is recent.”
Alessandro stared.
The boy looked almost exactly six years old.
But if Clara had seen him twenty-five years ago…
then something was wrong.
He turned the photograph over.
A sentence had been written on the back.
HE NEVER AGED.
THE BOY WHO NEVER AGED
The next morning, Daniel examined the photograph.
He stared at it for several seconds.
“I've seen him.”
Alessandro looked up.
“Where?”
“Underground.”
“At the laboratory?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Years ago.”
“How old was he?”
“Six.”
“Did he ever grow?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
Clara stepped closer.
“Did he speak?”
“Sometimes.”
“What did he say?”
Daniel looked at her.
“He always asked about his mother.”
Clara's heart tightened.
“Did he know who she was?”
“No.”
“Did anyone tell him?”
“No.”
“Then who was his mother?”
Daniel hesitated.
“She was one of the researchers.”
Alessandro frowned.
“Which one?”
Daniel looked at Clara.
“Your grandmother.”
Clara froze.
“Margaret?”
Daniel nodded.
“She had a child?”
“Yes.”
Alessandro's face changed.
“That's impossible.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Margaret wasn't just a researcher.”
“What was she?”
“His mother.”
Silence.
Alessandro stared at the photograph.
The boy wasn't simply another victim.
He was Margaret's biological son.
And if he was still alive—
then the Moretti bloodline had another secret.
THE FILE CALLED ZERO
Olivia entered the room carrying a laptop.
“I found something.”
Everyone turned.
“What?”
“The boy has a file.”
“What is it called?”
“Zero.”
Alessandro frowned.
“Subject Zero?”
Olivia nodded.
“There are no other records like it.”
“Open it.”
She did.
The screen displayed a photograph of the boy.
Then a medical report.
SUBJECT ZERO
AGE: UNKNOWN
ORIGIN: UNKNOWN
GENETIC STATUS: ORIGINAL
Alessandro stared.
“What does original mean?”
Olivia scrolled.
“It means his DNA wasn't modified.”
“Then why was he tested?”
“Because his DNA naturally contained the genetic markers the Circle spent decades trying to create.”
Clara whispered:
“He was born with them.”
“Yes.”
Olivia continued.
“And there's something else.”
She opened another page.
SUBJECT ZERO IS THE SOURCE.
Alessandro looked at her.
“Source of what?”
“The genetic sequence.”
Everyone became silent.
Clara stared at the screen.
“Then all of our children…”
Olivia nodded.
“May have been derived from his DNA.”
Alessandro's expression hardened.
“They used him to create the others.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked down.
“So that's why they called me the purest heir.”
Olivia nodded.
“Your genetic profile was designed from his.”
Amelia looked at the photograph.
“Then he's our brother.”
Clara whispered:
“No.”
She looked at the boy.
“He is more than that.”
Alessandro turned.
“What?”
Clara's voice trembled.
“He is the first child I ever saw.”
THE WOMAN WHO KNEW
A knock sounded at the door.
Everyone turned.
A police officer stood outside.
“Mr. Moretti.”
“Yes?”
“We found something in Bianca's records.”
“What?”
“A handwritten address.”
“Whose?”
The officer handed him the paper.
Alessandro read it.
His expression changed.
“That's an old Moretti property.”
“Where?”
“Outside Florence.”
Clara stared at him.
“That's where the hospital was.”
Alessandro nodded.
“The original hospital.”
The officer continued.
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
“Someone has been paying the electricity bill.”
“Who?”
The officer looked at the paper.
“Margaret Moretti.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“She is there.”
Alessandro looked at her.
“Then we're going.”
THE ABANDONED HOSPITAL
The building stood on a hill surrounded by trees.
Its windows were broken.
The paint had peeled away.
But the electricity was still running.
Reed checked the entrance.
“Someone has been here recently.”
Alessandro nodded.
“Stay alert.”
They entered.
The hallway smelled of dust and medicine.
Clara walked slowly.
Every corner triggered another memory.
A nurse.
A wheelchair.
A crying baby.
A locked door.
Then she stopped.
“This room.”
Alessandro looked at the sign.
ROOM 17.
Clara touched the handle.
“I was here.”
“What happened?”
“I don't know.”
She opened the door.
Inside was an old chair.
A medical monitor.
And a mirror.
Nothing else.
Then Clara noticed writing scratched into the wall.
She wiped away the dust.
A child's handwriting appeared.
MOM WILL COME BACK.
Clara began crying.
Alessandro held her.
“That's him.”
“Yes.”
“He waited for you.”
Clara nodded.
“I didn't know.”
“You do now.”
Then Daniel entered.
He looked toward the mirror.
“There.”
He pointed.
A small red light blinked behind the glass.
“A camera.”
Reed removed the mirror.
Behind it was a hidden room.
Inside—
a monitor.
A microphone.
And a chair.
Someone had been watching Room 17.
Recently.
Alessandro turned toward Reed.
“Can you access it?”
Reed connected a device.
The screen flickered.
A recording appeared.
A boy sat in the chair.
Subject Zero.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then he spoke.
“Mom?”
Clara covered her mouth.
The boy continued.
“If you're watching this…”
He looked down.
“…I'm still here.”
The recording ended.
Clara collapsed into Alessandro's arms.
THE LAST MESSAGE
A second recording started automatically.
This time, the boy was older.
Six years old.
Exactly as he appeared in the photograph.
He was standing beside a woman.
Margaret.
She placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Tell her what you know.”
The boy looked frightened.
“I don't want to.”
Margaret smiled.
“You have to.”
The boy looked at the camera.
“Mom…”
Clara stepped toward the screen.
“Yes.”
The boy continued:
“Grandmother says you're coming back.”
Clara's heart stopped.
“When?”
“Soon.”
The boy looked over his shoulder.
“She says you'll bring the others.”
Alessandro frowned.
“The others?”
The boy nodded.
“All of them.”
Margaret leaned toward him.
“What else?”
The boy whispered:
“She says Dad will come too.”
Alessandro froze.
“Dad?”
The boy looked at the camera.
“Your dad.”
Clara stared at Alessandro.
The recording continued.
Margaret said:
“Tell her the truth.”
The boy hesitated.
Then:
“Your father didn't die.”
Alessandro's face turned white.
“My father?”
Clara grabbed his hand.
The boy continued:
“He's here.”
Then the recording ended.
THE MAN IN THE BASEMENT
They searched the hospital.
Room by room.
Floor by floor.
Until they reached the basement.
There was a steel door.
Behind it—
a living area.
A bed.
A table.
Medical equipment.
And a man sitting in a chair.
His back was toward them.
Alessandro stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The man didn't answer.
Clara stared.
Then the man slowly turned.
Alessandro stopped breathing.
His father.
Vittorio.
Older.
Thinner.
But alive.
Alessandro whispered:
“Dad.”
Vittorio looked at him.
“Alessandro.”
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Alessandro walked toward him.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me suffer.”
“Yes.”
“You took my children.”
Vittorio shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Vittorio looked toward Clara.
“Your mother.”
Alessandro froze.
“Eleanor?”
Vittorio nodded.
“She started it.”
Clara stared.
“But Margaret…”
“She followed her.”
“And Matteo?”
“Her son.”
Alessandro's face hardened.
“My family is a lie.”
Vittorio looked at him.
“No.”
He pointed toward Clara.
“Your family was the only thing that was real.”
THE ORIGINAL SIN
Vittorio explained everything.
Twenty-five years earlier, Eleanor had discovered the Circle.
She wanted power.
Margaret wanted scientific control.
Matteo wanted money.
Vittorio wanted to stop them.
But he failed.
When Clara became pregnant, they saw an opportunity.
Seven children.
Seven genetic combinations.
One extraordinary child.
Subject Zero.
They wanted to use the children to create a permanent genetic advantage.
But Vittorio secretly tried to sabotage the program.
He helped Clara escape.
He helped Daniel survive.
He arranged for Elena to be hidden.
And when Eleanor discovered what he had done—
she ordered his death.
“But you survived.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your mother thought she killed me.”
Alessandro stared.
“Why didn't you come back?”
“Because she threatened your life.”
Vittorio looked at Clara.
“And hers.”
Clara's eyes filled.
“You could have told me.”
“I tried.”
“How?”
“I sent letters.”
“Never received them.”
“I know.”
Vittorio looked away.
“They intercepted everything.”
THE BOY ARRIVES
Suddenly, footsteps echoed in the hallway.
Everyone turned.
A small boy appeared.
Six years old.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
The crescent-shaped birthmark.
Subject Zero.
He stared at Clara.
She dropped to her knees.
“Come here.”
The boy hesitated.
Then slowly walked toward her.
Clara opened her arms.
He stepped into them.
She held him.
“My baby.”
The boy began crying.
“I waited.”
“I know.”
“Why didn't you come?”
“I didn't know.”
He buried his face against her shoulder.
“I knew you would.”
Alessandro watched.
Then the boy looked at him.
“Are you Dad?”
Alessandro's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
The boy smiled.
“I knew you would come too.”
Alessandro knelt.
The child walked into his arms.
For the first time, Alessandro held the child whose existence had been erased from every family record.
The missing seventh.
The original.
The beginning of everything.
Then Olivia's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“Dad…”
“What?”
“The police found Eleanor.”
“Where?”
“She turned herself in.”
Alessandro stared.
“Why?”
Olivia swallowed.
“She says the Circle wasn't her idea.”
“Then whose?”
Olivia looked at him.
“She says it started with someone else.”
“Who?”
Olivia hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your great-grandfather.”
Alessandro closed his eyes.
Another generation.
Another secret.
Another lie.
But this time, he didn't feel afraid.
Because his family was standing beside him.
Clara.
Livia.
Marco.
Amelia.
Elena.
Daniel.
And the seventh child.
The child who had been called Zero.
The child who had survived everything.
The child whose existence had exposed the truth.
Alessandro stood.
He took Clara's hand.
“We're going home.”
Clara smiled through her tears.
“Yes.”
Behind them, Vittorio remained silent.
But as they walked away, he looked toward the old monitor.
A final file had appeared.
PROJECT ZERO — PHASE TWO
Beneath it was one sentence.
SUBJECT ZERO WAS NEVER THE EXPERIMENT.
Vittorio's face changed.
He whispered:
“No…”
The screen displayed the final message.
HE WAS THE CREATOR.
Vittorio stared in horror.
And somewhere far away, someone watched the same screen.
Someone who had been waiting twenty-three years.
Someone who knew the truth.
Someone who had never been part of the Circle.
Someone who had created it.
May you like
And now—
they were coming for the family.
