CHAPTER 12 — THE BOY WHO WASN’T A BOY

“You should have left me behind.”

The words hung in the laboratory like a death sentence.

Clara stared at Zero.

His voice had been wrong.

Not deeper.

Not louder.

Simply… older.

The child standing in front of her suddenly looked like a stranger.

“Zero?”

He didn't answer.

Alessandro stepped between them.

“Stay behind me.”

Zero's eyes moved toward him.

For a moment, there was no emotion in them.

Then his face changed.

A tiny tremor crossed his lips.

“Dad?”

Alessandro froze.

The child's eyes filled with tears.

“I'm scared.”

Clara immediately moved toward him.

“I'm here.”

Zero reached for her.

She pulled him into her arms.

His body was shaking violently.

“Mom…”

Clara held him tighter.

“What happened?”

“I don't know.”

“You were speaking differently.”

“I heard them.”

“Who?”

“All of them.”

Daniel looked toward the machine.

“The memories.”

Zero nodded.

“They woke up.”

Isabella's expression hardened.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

For the first time—

she looked afraid.

THE VOICES

Zero covered his ears.

“They're screaming.”

Clara knelt beside him.

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

“Can you make them stop?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel crouched beside him.

“Listen to me.”

Zero looked at him.

“I'm here.”

“Adrian?”

Daniel froze.

That name again.

The name the Circle had erased.

“You remember?”

Zero nodded.

“You were Adrian.”

Daniel's breathing stopped.

“How do you know?”

“Lucian told me.”

Daniel stared.

“Lucian?”

Zero nodded.

“He's still here.”

“Where?”

Zero pointed toward his own chest.

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.”

“He didn't die.”

“What?”

“He lives inside me.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

Isabella stepped forward.

“That is impossible.”

Zero looked at her.

“You lied.”

She froze.

“You told me Lucian was gone.”

“He is.”

“No.”

Zero shook his head.

“He gave me his identity.”

Daniel stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means…”

Zero's eyes suddenly changed.

“…I'm not one person.”

THE TWO BROTHERS

The machine flashed.

A second voice came from Zero's mouth.

A young boy's voice.

“Daniel.”

Daniel froze.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it in his dreams.

“Lucian?”

Zero smiled.

But the smile wasn't his.

“Yes.”

Daniel approached slowly.

“My brother?”

“Yes.”

“Where have you been?”

“Everywhere.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I was.”

“Then how are you speaking?”

Lucian answered through Zero:

“Because he remembered me.”

Daniel looked at Zero.

“So you're both inside him?”

“Yes.”

Clara covered her mouth.

Isabella stepped backward.

“No.”

Lucian turned toward her.

“You didn't expect this.”

Isabella's face tightened.

“Silence.”

Lucian smiled.

“You were afraid of us.”

“I created you.”

“No.”

The voice became colder.

“You created the cage.”

THE ORIGINAL PLAN

Olivia suddenly shouted:

“Dad!”

Everyone turned.

She was staring at the monitors.

“The system has changed.”

“How?”

“It isn't transferring memories anymore.”

“Then what is it doing?”

Olivia swallowed.

“It's releasing them.”

Daniel looked at the machine.

“Releasing them where?”

“Everywhere.”

The monitors began displaying names.

Doctors.

Scientists.

Politicians.

Bankers.

Judges.

Police officers.

Executives.

Hundreds of people.

Alessandro stared.

“These are Circle members.”

Olivia shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed at the list.

“These are people who were controlled by the Circle.”

“What?”

“Every one of them has a neural implant.”

Daniel understood.

“They were hosts too.”

Isabella looked furious.

“Shut it down.”

Olivia smiled.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Zero took control.”

Isabella stared at the child.

Zero looked at her.

“I learned from you.”

THE MESSAGE

Every screen went black.

Then one sentence appeared.

THE TRUTH WILL BE RELEASED IN TEN MINUTES.

Alessandro looked at Olivia.

“What does that mean?”

“Everything.”

“Everything?”

“The files.”

“The experiments.”

“The names.”

“The recordings.”

“The transfers.”

“The murders.”

“The children.”

All of it.

The entire history of the Circle.

Every crime.

Every secret.

Every victim.

Would be released to the world.

Isabella moved toward the control panel.

“No.”

Alessandro blocked her.

“You're not touching it.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“If those files are released, thousands of people will die.”

Alessandro stared.

“You're worried about them now?”

“No.”

She looked toward Zero.

“I'm worried about what happens when the world learns what he is.”

THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

Clara stepped forward.

“What happens?”

Isabella looked at her.

“He isn't immortal.”

“What?”

“He's unstable.”

Clara's expression changed.

“Explain.”

“Every memory inside him is fighting for control.”

Daniel looked at Zero.

“That's why he's suffering.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Isabella hesitated.

“How long what?”

“How long before he breaks?”

“Minutes.”

Clara's face went pale.

“No.”

Isabella looked toward the machine.

“The only way to save him is to complete the transfer.”

“To you?”

“No.”

She looked at Daniel.

“To him.”

Daniel froze.

“Me?”

“You carry the original memory pattern.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

“If Zero transfers the memories into Daniel, the conflict ends.”

“And Daniel?”

“He will carry them.”

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

“What happens to him?”

Isabella didn't answer.

Daniel understood.

“I die.”

Clara grabbed his arm.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom.”

“No.”

“It's okay.”

“It isn't.”

“You just got me back.”

“And I'm not losing you again.”

Daniel smiled.

“You taught me that love isn't a memory.”

Clara began crying.

“Don't use my own words against me.”

He hugged her.

“I finally know who I am.”

THE CHOICE

Alessandro stepped forward.

“There has to be another way.”

Olivia shook her head.

“I've searched.”

“Nothing?”

“Nothing safe.”

Daniel looked at Zero.

“How long?”

Zero whispered:

“Eight minutes.”

Everyone went silent.

Daniel walked toward the machine.

Clara followed.

“No.”

He turned.

“Mom.”

“Please.”

“I have to.”

“Why you?”

“Because I'm the only one who can.”

Alessandro grabbed him.

“We'll find another way.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You spent twenty-three years believing I was someone else.”

“Yes.”

“Now you finally know me.”

“Yes.”

“Then trust me.”

Alessandro's eyes filled with tears.

“I can't lose another son.”

Daniel hugged him.

“You won't.”

He whispered:

“Because I'll always be here.”

THE LAST SECRET OF ISABELLA

Before Daniel could enter the chamber, Isabella spoke.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

She looked at Zero.

“There is something you don't know.”

Clara stared at her.

“What?”

“Lucian didn't give Zero his identity.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then what happened?”

Isabella took a slow breath.

“Lucian was the original host.”

Zero looked confused.

“The original?”

“Yes.”

“Then who am I?”

Isabella looked directly into his eyes.

“You are not Zero.”

Silence.

Clara's heart stopped.

“What are you saying?”

“The child you knew as Zero died twenty-three years ago.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

“I watched it happen.”

“Then who is this?”

Isabella pointed toward the boy.

“A reconstruction.”

Daniel stared.

“Created from what?”

“Your memories.”

Daniel's face went white.

“And Lucian?”

“His consciousness was transferred into the reconstructed body.”

Clara stared at Zero.

“So he's…”

“Lucian.”

Zero began crying.

“Mom?”

Clara pulled him into her arms.

“I don't care what they called you.”

She kissed his forehead.

“You're my child.”

Isabella looked at her.

“You still don't understand.”

Clara turned.

“What?”

“The body isn't the problem.”

She pointed toward Daniel.

“The memory is.”

THE REAL ENEMY

Daniel looked at Isabella.

“What do you want?”

“I want you to stop the transfer.”

“Why?”

“Because it won't save him.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then what will?”

“Nothing.”

Silence.

“He's already dying.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

“He has too many identities.”

“Then remove them.”

“Which one?”

Clara looked at Lucian.

“My son.”

Isabella smiled.

“Which one?”

Clara stepped closer.

“All of them.”

“What?”

“Remove every memory they forced into him.”

Daniel understood.

“Reset him.”

“Yes.”

Olivia stared at the data.

“That could work.”

Isabella nodded.

“But he would lose everything.”

“Everything?”

“His memories.”

“Even us?”

“Yes.”

Clara's face collapsed.

Zero looked at her.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“If I forget you…”

He smiled.

“…you can teach me again.”

Clara cried.

“That isn't fair.”

“No.”

He touched her face.

“But it's better than dying.”

THE RESET

Olivia prepared the machine.

Daniel stood beside her.

Alessandro held Clara.

Zero sat in the chair.

His small hands trembled.

Clara knelt before him.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“Whatever happens…”

She kissed his forehead.

“…I will find you.”

He smiled.

“You always do.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I'll be here too.”

Zero looked at him.

“Brother.”

Daniel smiled.

“Brother.”

The machine activated.

A white light surrounded Zero.

The voices began screaming.

Twenty-seven identities.

Twenty-seven lives.

Twenty-seven memories.

One by one—

they disappeared.

Zero screamed.

Clara cried out.

“Stop!”

Olivia shook her head.

“We have to finish!”

The first memory vanished.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Names disappeared.

Faces disappeared.

Pain disappeared.

Fear disappeared.

The Circle disappeared.

Eleanor disappeared.

Isabella disappeared.

Until only one memory remained.

Clara.

Holding him as a newborn.

Whispering:

“I love you.”

Zero smiled.

“That's enough.”

The machine flashed.

Then everything went dark.

AFTER THE SILENCE

When the lights returned—

Zero was unconscious.

Clara rushed toward him.

“Is he alive?”

Olivia checked his pulse.

“Yes.”

Clara began crying.

“Wake up.”

Nothing.

“Please.”

Alessandro touched her shoulder.

“Give him time.”

Hours passed.

Then—

Zero opened his eyes.

He looked around.

Confused.

Afraid.

Clara approached slowly.

“Hello.”

The boy stared at her.

“Who are you?”

Clara's heart broke.

She smiled through her tears.

“My name is Clara.”

“Do I know you?”

“No.”

She knelt.

“But I know you.”

“What is my name?”

Clara looked at Alessandro.

Then Daniel.

Then back at the child.

“Lucian.”

The boy smiled.

“Lucian.”

He repeated it.

As though tasting the word for the first time.

Then he asked:

“Are you my mother?”

Clara cried.

“Yes.”

He reached for her hand.

“Then I think I want to know you.”

Clara took his hand.

“You will.”

ISABELLA'S LAST MOVE

But Isabella was gone.

The police searched the laboratory.

She had disappeared.

Only one thing remained.

A note.

Alessandro opened it.

Five words.

YOU SAVED THE WRONG CHILD.

He stared.

Then looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face changed.

“What?”

Alessandro handed him the note.

Daniel read it.

His eyes widened.

“Dad…”

“What?”

“This isn't about Lucian.”

“Then who?”

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Livia.”

Alessandro froze.

“What about her?”

Daniel whispered:

“She wasn't Subject Seven.”

“She was Subject Zero.”

Silence.

Clara turned toward the nursery.

“No.”

Daniel's voice trembled.

“They switched the babies.”

Alessandro ran.

The nursery door was open.

Livia's bed was empty.

Her blanket lay on the floor.

A tiny bracelet rested beside it.

Alessandro picked it up.

The engraving made his blood run cold.

PROJECT ZERO — ORIGINAL HOST.

He screamed:

“LIVIA!”

And somewhere beyond the house—

a car disappeared into the night.

Inside it, a woman held a sleeping little girl.

May you like

The woman smiled.

“Welcome home, Zero.”
