CHAPTER 6 — THE BROTHER WHO HAD BEEN WATCHING

The photograph remained on the screen.

Seven children.

Seven lives.

Seven secrets.

Alessandro couldn't look away.

For twenty-three years, he had believed his family had been destroyed by a series of tragedies.

Now he understood the truth.

The tragedies had never been accidents.

They had been decisions.

Calculated.

Deliberate.

And someone had been making those decisions long before he was old enough to understand what the Moretti name meant.

He looked at Clara.

“How many children did you carry?”

Clara's lips trembled.

“I don't remember.”

“You gave birth to seven?”

“I remember the twins.”

She looked at Amelia.

“I remember Livia.”

She looked toward the hallway.

“I remember Marco.”

“But not the others?”

Clara shook her head.

“They took pieces of my memory.”

Alessandro turned toward Amelia.

“You said seven survived.”

“No.”

Amelia corrected him.

“Six survived.”

“And Daniel?”

“I was told he died.”

“Who told you?”

“Margaret.”

“Did you believe her?”

“For years.”

“And now?”

Amelia looked at the photograph.

“Now I know she lied.”

Alessandro stared at the image.

The boy in the photograph was only a newborn.

His face was impossible to identify.

But one thing was visible.

A tiny crescent-shaped mark behind his ear.

The same birthmark every child in Clara's bloodline carried.

Alessandro whispered:

“He's alive.”

Amelia nodded.

“I think so.”

“Why?”

“Because the photograph was taken recently.”

Silence filled the laboratory.

Olivia's voice came through the speaker.

“I found the metadata.”

Alessandro looked up.

“What does it say?”

“The image was created yesterday.”

“Yesterday?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Olivia paused.

“Chicago.”

Alessandro's expression changed.

“Can you trace the camera?”

“I'm trying.”

“Do it.”

“I've got something.”

Everyone waited.

“The photograph came from a private security network.”

“Whose?”

Olivia's voice became quieter.

“The Moretti Foundation.”

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

“My foundation?”

“Technically.”

“What does that mean?”

“The server is registered under your name.”

He stared at the screen.

Someone had been using his company to watch his family.

For years.

Without his knowledge.

Then Olivia said:

“Dad…”

“What?”

“I found another file.”

“Open it.”

“I don't think you want to.”

“Open it.”

The screen changed.

A surveillance photograph appeared.

A man stood outside Alessandro's office.

The image was blurry.

But the face was clear enough.

Alessandro stared.

He knew that face.

Not personally.

But from photographs.

From family archives.

From an old portrait his father had kept locked away.

His uncle.

Matteo.

Again.

Except this time, Matteo wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was a young man.

A man around twenty-three.

Alessandro's heart began pounding.

“Zoom in.”

Olivia did.

The young man turned toward the camera.

And Alessandro saw the crescent-shaped birthmark behind his ear.

Clara covered her mouth.

“Daniel.”

THE MAN WHO NEVER SPOKE

The next morning, Alessandro flew to Chicago.

He took Clara, Amelia, Elena, Olivia, and Reed.

Livia and Marco stayed behind with Rosalie and a heavily armed security team.

Alessandro hated leaving them.

But he couldn't risk bringing two young children into an unknown situation.

Before leaving, he knelt beside Livia.

“I'll be back.”

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

Marco stood behind her.

Alessandro opened one arm.

Marco hesitated.

Then stepped forward.

Alessandro pulled him close.

“We're bringing your brother home.”

Marco whispered:

“Is he scared?”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Probably.”

“Then don't scare him.”

Alessandro smiled sadly.

“I won't.”

Marco nodded.

Then he whispered:

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“If Daniel is my brother…”

He looked toward Clara.

“Does that mean Mommy was always looking for him?”

Alessandro glanced at Clara.

She was crying.

“Yes.”

Marco nodded.

“Then find him.”

Alessandro kissed his forehead.

“I will.”

The flight to Chicago was silent.

Clara sat beside the window.

She hadn't spoken for almost an hour.

Alessandro finally asked:

“What are you thinking?”

“That I should remember him.”

“You were drugged.”

“I know.”

“But you were his mother.”

“That doesn't make the memories disappear.”

Alessandro took her hand.

“It's not your fault.”

Clara looked at him.

“Do you know what hurts?”

“What?”

“I remember holding seven babies.”

Alessandro's chest tightened.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before they separated us.”

She closed her eyes.

“I remember their cries.”

“Clara…”

“I remember one baby wouldn't stop crying.”

She swallowed.

“Daniel.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because when they took him…”

Her voice broke.

“…he reached for me.”

Alessandro said nothing.

Clara continued.

“He had tiny fingers.”

She stared through the window.

“I promised him I'd come back.”

“You did.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I came back too late.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“You came back.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“That has to count for something.”

“It counts for everything.”

THE ABANDONED HOTEL

The surveillance signal led them to an abandoned hotel on the south side of Chicago.

The building had been closed for eleven years.

No electricity.

No registered tenants.

No cameras.

At least, none that were visible.

Reed checked the surrounding area.

“Someone is maintaining this place.”

Alessandro frowned.

“How do you know?”

“There are fresh tire tracks.”

“Recent?”

“Within twelve hours.”

Clara looked at the building.

“He's here.”

They entered through the rear.

The hallway smelled of dust and damp concrete.

A broken chandelier hung from the ceiling.

Alessandro moved slowly.

Reed led the way.

Amelia followed.

Then Elena.

Clara stayed beside Alessandro.

Suddenly—

a door slammed.

Everyone turned.

Reed raised his weapon.

“Who's there?”

No answer.

They continued.

At the end of the hallway was an elevator.

The control panel had no buttons.

Amelia walked toward it.

“There.”

She touched a small sensor.

The elevator doors opened.

Alessandro stared.

“How did you know?”

“I've seen it before.”

“When?”

“When I was a child.”

“You were here?”

Amelia nodded.

“I was brought here once.”

“By whom?”

“Matteo.”

The elevator descended.

Far below the hotel.

The doors opened.

A corridor stretched ahead.

And at the end—

a single room.

Inside was a bed.

A table.

A computer.

And photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Alessandro walked closer.

The photographs showed his family.

Livia.

Marco.

Clara.

Amelia.

Elena.

Olivia.

And him.

But there were also photographs of another person.

A young man.

Daniel.

Alessandro picked one up.

Daniel was standing outside the Moretti mansion.

He was looking toward Livia.

Another showed him watching Marco at school.

Another showed him sitting across the street from the family restaurant.

Another showed him standing near Clara's car.

He had been watching them.

For years.

Alessandro whispered:

“Why?”

A voice answered behind him.

“Because I wanted to know what my family looked like.”

Everyone turned.

A young man stood in the doorway.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

Tall.

Lean.

Calm.

The same crescent-shaped mark behind his ear.

Clara's knees almost gave way.

“Daniel.”

The young man looked at her.

For a moment, his expression remained emotionless.

Then his eyes filled with tears.

“Mom.”

Clara ran toward him.

Daniel didn't move.

She stopped inches away.

Afraid to touch him.

Afraid he would disappear.

Then Daniel slowly opened his arms.

Clara collapsed against him.

He held her.

And whispered:

“You came back.”

Clara sobbed.

“I promised.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I waited.”

THE BOY WHO WASN'T DEAD

Alessandro watched them.

He had imagined this moment differently.

He had imagined anger.

Questions.

Revenge.

Instead, he saw a mother holding the son she had lost.

He stepped forward.

Daniel looked at him.

Neither spoke.

Then Daniel asked:

“Are you Alessandro?”

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

“I've watched you for years.”

“Why didn't you come to me?”

“I couldn't.”

“Who stopped you?”

“Matteo.”

“Where is he?”

Daniel looked away.

“Still alive.”

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“You lived here?”

“Sometimes.”

“Who took care of you?”

Daniel hesitated.

“People.”

“What people?”

“The Circle.”

Alessandro's expression darkened.

“They raised you?”

“They trained me.”

“For what?”

Daniel looked directly at him.

“To replace you.”

Silence.

Alessandro stared.

“Replace me?”

“They wanted me to inherit the Moretti empire.”

“Why?”

“Because I was the purest heir.”

Alessandro frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel's face hardened.

“They altered my DNA.”

Clara stepped backward.

“What?”

“They wanted to strengthen the genetic markers.”

Alessandro stared.

“What did they do to you?”

Daniel pulled back his sleeve.

Scars covered his arm.

Clara covered her mouth.

“My baby…”

Daniel lowered his sleeve.

“They used me as a test.”

Alessandro's hands clenched.

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

“Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“Matteo?”

“Yes.”

“Vittorio?”

“Yes.”

“Bianca?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel looked at Clara.

“Someone you still trust.”

THE NAME ON THE WALL

Daniel walked toward the computer.

He typed a password.

The screen displayed a list of names.

Alessandro read them.

Executives.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Politicians.

Bankers.

Security officers.

Then one name appeared in red.

RICHARD VALE.

Alessandro froze.

Richard.

The man who had been helping them.

The man who had claimed to know the truth.

The man who had helped them find the underground laboratory.

The man who had warned them about the Circle.

Alessandro stared at Daniel.

“You're saying Richard is part of this?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not part.”

“Then what?”

“The founder.”

Clara stepped forward.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Richard died years ago.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

Alessandro's blood ran cold.

“Then who is the man helping us?”

Daniel answered:

“An actor.”

THE IMPOSTOR

Alessandro's phone rang.

Richard.

He answered.

“Where are you?”

A pause.

“At home.”

Alessandro looked around the abandoned room.

“Which home?”

Another pause.

“What does that mean?”

Alessandro smiled coldly.

“Tell me where you were born.”

Silence.

“Richard?”

The call ended.

Alessandro immediately called Reed.

“Lock down the estate.”

“Already done.”

“Do not let anyone leave.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Especially Richard.”

A message arrived.

A photograph.

Livia and Marco were sitting at the breakfast table.

The photograph had been taken inside the mansion.

Alessandro's blood turned to ice.

The message said:

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED HOME.

He called Rosalie.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Then Olivia's phone rang.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice said:

“Tell your father to stop looking.”

Olivia froze.

“Who are you?”

“You know me.”

“Who?”

The line went dead.

Olivia looked at Alessandro.

“Dad…”

“What?”

“He said I know him.”

Then she remembered.

Her eyes widened.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“The voice.”

“What about it?”

“I've heard it before.”

“Where?”

She swallowed.

“In our house.”

THE MAN WHO HAD BEEN THERE

Everyone turned toward her.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Who?”

“A man came to the house.”

Alessandro frowned.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I thought he was security.”

“What did he look like?”

“Older.”

“How old?”

“Maybe fifty.”

“Anything else?”

“He had a scar.”

“Where?”

“Above his eyebrow.”

Alessandro's face changed.

Matteo.

Again.

Olivia continued.

“But he didn't introduce himself as Matteo.”

“What name did he use?”

“Mr. Vale.”

Silence.

Alessandro stared.

“Richard Vale.”

Olivia nodded.

“But there was something strange.”

“What?”

“He knew things only our family knew.”

“Like what?”

“The secret room.”

Alessandro's stomach tightened.

“What else?”

“He knew about Livia's birthmark.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Then she whispered:

“He wasn't Richard.”

“No.”

Alessandro understood.

The man who had been helping them had been someone else.

Someone who had infiltrated the family long before the wedding.

Someone who had access to every room.

Every camera.

Every document.

Every child.

THE RETURN HOME

Alessandro ordered the private jet back.

The flight seemed endless.

Clara sat beside Daniel.

She couldn't stop touching his face.

As if she needed to make sure he was real.

Daniel remained quiet.

Finally, he asked:

“Do you hate me?”

Clara looked shocked.

“Why would I hate you?”

“Because I watched your family.”

“You were a child.”

“I helped them.”

“You were forced.”

“I still did it.”

Clara shook her head.

“You survived.”

Daniel looked away.

“That's not the same thing.”

Clara took his hand.

“It is to me.”

Across the cabin, Alessandro watched them.

Then Daniel looked at him.

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

“Even though I watched Livia?”

“You protected her.”

Daniel nodded.

“I did.”

“How?”

“I warned her.”

Alessandro frowned.

“When?”

“The night Bianca pushed the stroller.”

Alessandro froze.

“You knew?”

Daniel nodded.

“I saw Bianca near the staircase.”

“Why didn't you stop her?”

“I tried.”

“How?”

“I distracted her.”

“But she still pushed it.”

“Yes.”

“Then Clara saved Livia.”

Daniel looked at Clara.

“She was always going to.”

Alessandro stared at him.

“You knew Clara was alive?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

Alessandro's eyes widened.

“You could have told me.”

“I tried.”

“How?”

“I left messages.”

“What messages?”

“The photographs.”

Alessandro suddenly understood.

The anonymous photographs.

The warnings.

The strange clues.

Daniel had been trying to guide him toward the truth.

“Why didn't you reveal yourself?”

“Because Matteo threatened to kill Livia.”

Alessandro's face hardened.

“He controlled you.”

“Yes.”

“Not anymore.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

THE MANSION

They arrived at midnight.

The estate was surrounded by security.

But something was wrong.

Too quiet.

Alessandro stepped out.

“Where is everyone?”

Reed looked pale.

“The cameras stopped working.”

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

Alessandro immediately ran inside.

“Livia!”

No answer.

“Marco!”

Silence.

Rosalie appeared at the end of the hallway.

Her face was bleeding.

Alessandro rushed toward her.

“What happened?”

“They took them.”

His blood froze.

“Who?”

“Richard.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“Where is he?”

“He left through the underground tunnel.”

Alessandro turned toward Daniel.

Daniel was already moving.

“I know where it goes.”

They ran downstairs.

Through the hidden passage.

Past the laboratory.

Past the archive.

At the end was a steel door.

Daniel opened it.

They emerged behind the old family chapel.

A black vehicle waited.

Its engine was running.

Then the rear door opened.

A man stepped out.

Richard.

Or the man pretending to be Richard.

He held Livia in one hand.

Marco stood beside him.

Both children were frightened.

Alessandro stepped forward.

“Let them go.”

The man smiled.

“You finally understand.”

“Who are you?”

The man removed a mask.

The face beneath it belonged to Matteo.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

Clara gasped.

“You.”

Matteo smiled.

“Hello, sister.”

Alessandro stepped forward.

“You took my children.”

“No.”

Matteo shook his head.

“I took what belongs to the family.”

“They belong to me.”

“They belong to the bloodline.”

Daniel stepped beside Alessandro.

Matteo's expression changed.

“You.”

Daniel stared at him.

“You said I was dead.”

“You were supposed to be.”

“But I'm not.”

Matteo raised his weapon.

“Then perhaps you should have stayed hidden.”

Alessandro stepped in front of Daniel.

“You're not touching him.”

Matteo smiled.

“You still think you're in control.”

Then a second vehicle arrived.

Bianca stepped out.

She was wearing a black coat.

She looked at Alessandro.

“Hello.”

Alessandro stared.

“You're supposed to be in custody.”

Bianca smiled.

“I was.”

“Then how are you here?”

She looked toward Matteo.

“He helped me.”

Alessandro understood.

The entire arrest had been part of the plan.

Bianca had never been the mastermind.

She had only been bait.

Matteo looked at Clara.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Clara stepped forward.

“I said that once.”

She looked at Daniel.

“And I survived.”

Then Olivia appeared behind Matteo.

Holding a phone.

“You might want to check your computer.”

Matteo turned.

“What?”

Olivia smiled.

“Everything you did has been uploaded.”

His expression changed.

“What did you do?”

“I sent the entire archive to the police.”

Matteo's face hardened.

“You little—”

Sirens filled the night.

Police vehicles surrounded the chapel.

Matteo looked around.

His escape was gone.

Bianca stepped backward.

“No.”

Alessandro walked toward them.

“This is over.”

Matteo looked at him.

“You think this ends with me?”

Alessandro stopped.

“What?”

Matteo laughed.

“You still don't know who started it.”

Then he looked at Clara.

“Ask your mother.”

Clara froze.

“My mother?”

Matteo smiled.

“Eleanor knew everything.”

Clara stared.

“But Eleanor is dead.”

Matteo's smile widened.

“So was I.”

The police stormed the area.

Matteo dropped his weapon.

Bianca was arrested again.

Livia ran into Alessandro's arms.

Marco followed.

Alessandro held both children.

For the first time that night, he could breathe.

But Clara couldn't.

She stared at Matteo.

“Where is Eleanor?”

Matteo was dragged away.

His final words echoed through the chapel.

“Exactly where she's always been.”

THE LAST DOOR

Three days later, the police searched every Moretti property.

They found financial records.

Hidden laboratories.

Forged identities.

Dozens of secret accounts.

But no Eleanor.

Then Daniel discovered something.

An old photograph.

Eleanor standing outside a small seaside house.

The photograph was dated two months earlier.

Clara stared at it.

“She survived.”

Alessandro nodded.

“We'll find her.”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“No.”

“What?”

“She wants us to find her.”

“Why?”

“Because she's ready.”

“For what?”

Daniel turned the photograph over.

A message was written on the back.

COME ALONE.

Alessandro stared.

“Absolutely not.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She expects that.”

“What do you mean?”

“She knows you.”

“She doesn't know me.”

“She does.”

Daniel pointed to the photograph.

“Look at the house.”

Alessandro zoomed in.

A child's bicycle stood beside the porch.

Then another.

Then another.

Seven bicycles.

Clara's face changed.

“Children.”

Daniel nodded.

“She has them.”

Alessandro's blood ran cold.

“Who?”

Daniel whispered:

“The children who disappeared from the Circle.”

Clara stepped forward.

“We're going.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Not alone.”

Daniel nodded.

“Together.”

THE SEASIDE HOUSE

They reached the house at dawn.

The ocean was gray.

Wind swept across the cliffs.

The front door was open.

Alessandro entered first.

No guards.

No weapons.

No traps.

Just silence.

Seven photographs hung on the wall.

Each showed a child.

Each child had disappeared from the Circle.

Clara looked at them.

“They're alive.”

A woman's voice came from upstairs.

“Yes.”

Eleanor appeared.

Older.

Fragile.

But alive.

Clara stared at her.

“You.”

Eleanor looked at Alessandro.

“I knew you'd come.”

Alessandro stepped forward.

“You destroyed my family.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

“You took our children.”

“I saved them.”

“Everyone says that.”

“Because it's true.”

Clara's voice broke.

“Then why didn't you save me?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“I tried.”

“You let me believe my children were dead.”

“To protect them.”

“You erased my memories.”

“I had no choice.”

Clara laughed bitterly.

“There is always a choice.”

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

“You're right.”

For the first time, she looked old.

Not powerful.

Not dangerous.

Just tired.

“I made terrible choices.”

Alessandro stared.

“Why?”

Eleanor looked at the children.

“Because I believed the Circle could control the future.”

“And?”

“I was wrong.”

“What changed?”

She looked at Daniel.

“He survived.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You were afraid of me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you proved that the Circle couldn't control everything.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You could have stopped it.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I should have.”

Silence.

Then she handed Alessandro a small box.

Inside was a collection of birth bracelets.

Seven.

All preserved.

Clara began crying.

Eleanor whispered:

“They were never forgotten.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Then why did you let them suffer?”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Because I was a coward.”

The police arrived moments later.

Eleanor didn't resist.

She simply held out her hands.

Before she was taken away, she looked at Clara.

“I am sorry.”

Clara didn't answer.

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

“I hope you become nothing like us.”

Daniel replied:

“I won't.”

ONE YEAR LATER

The Moretti empire changed completely.

The Circle was dismantled.

Hundreds of arrests followed.

The hidden laboratories were closed.

The stolen money was recovered.

The medical research was transferred to legitimate institutions.

And the children who had disappeared were reunited with their families.

The Moretti name was no longer associated with secrecy.

Alessandro sold most of the old estate.

He kept only the smaller house overlooking the sea.

It became a home.

A real one.

Livia and Marco shared a bedroom.

Amelia painted every morning.

Elena went back to school.

Daniel studied medicine.

Clara opened a small foundation for children affected by illegal experimentation.

And Alessandro—

finally learned how to be a father without being afraid of losing his children.

One evening, he stood outside watching them play.

Livia ran across the grass.

Marco chased her.

Amelia laughed.

Elena sat beneath a tree.

Daniel was reading on the porch.

Clara came to stand beside Alessandro.

“They're happy.”

He smiled.

“They deserve it.”

Clara leaned against him.

“Do you ever think about what happened?”

“Every day.”

“And?”

Alessandro looked at the children.

“I think we survived.”

Clara smiled.

“We did more than survive.”

“What?”

“We found each other.”

He took her hand.

“I loved you before I knew what love was.”

Clara looked at him.

“And now?”

“Now I know.”

She smiled.

Then Livia shouted from the yard.

“Mom! Dad!”

They turned.

Livia held up a photograph.

“Look!”

Alessandro walked toward her.

“What is it?”

She showed him.

It was an old photograph of the entire family.

Seven children.

Clara.

Alessandro.

And even Eleanor.

Livia smiled.

“Everyone is together.”

Alessandro looked at the picture.

Then at his family.

For years, he had believed his greatest mistake was trusting the wrong people.

He had been wrong.

His greatest mistake had been believing that the truth could stay buried forever.

It couldn't.

Truth waited.

Sometimes for years.

Sometimes for decades.

But eventually—

it found the light.

Alessandro pulled Clara close.

Daniel joined them.

Then Amelia.

Then Elena.

Then Livia and Marco.

The family stood together beneath the evening sky.

No secrets.

No hidden rooms.

No false identities.

No lies.

Just family.

And for the first time in twenty-three years, Clara looked at all her children and knew exactly where they were.

Safe.

Together.

Home.

She whispered:

“I found you.”

Daniel smiled.

“No, Mom.”

He looked around at everyone.

May you like

“We found each other.”

And that was the truth that finally mattered.
