CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN WHO DIED TWELVE YEARS AGO

The room went silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

Alessandro stared at the photograph on Olivia's laptop.

The man standing outside Bianca's office was unmistakable.

Tall.

Gray suit.

Silver watch.

A thin scar above his right eyebrow.

And the same cold eyes Alessandro remembered from childhood.

Matteo Moretti.

His mother's older brother.

His uncle.

A man who had supposedly died twelve years ago.

A man whose funeral Alessandro had attended.

A man whose ashes had been buried beneath a marble tombstone in the Moretti family cemetery.

A dead man.

Except he wasn't dead.

Clara slowly approached the screen.

“That's him.”

Alessandro nodded.

“Yes.”

Rosalie's face had lost all color.

She stared at the photograph.

“No…”

Alessandro turned toward her.

“You know him.”

Rosalie shook her head.

“No.”

“You just reacted.”

“I've never seen that man.”

“You're lying.”

Rosalie stepped backward.

“I swear.”

Olivia zoomed in on the photograph.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“Look at his hand.”

Alessandro leaned closer.

The man was holding a small black object.

A ring.

A silver ring with a black stone.

Alessandro knew it.

He had seen it thousands of times.

His uncle Matteo had worn it every day.

But there was something engraved on it.

A symbol.

Three interlocking circles.

The same symbol that appeared on the secret files.

The same symbol Clara had found in the hospital records.

The same symbol that appeared on the back of the photograph of Livia and Marco.

Alessandro whispered:

“The Moretti Foundation.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“That symbol existed before your family foundation.”

“Then what is it?”

Clara looked at him.

“The organization.”

THE ORIGINAL ORGANIZATION

Richard sat silently in his wheelchair.

He had been listening from the corner.

Alessandro turned toward him.

“You know what that symbol means.”

Richard looked away.

“Dad.”

No response.

“Look at me.”

Richard slowly raised his eyes.

“It's called the Circle.”

Alessandro frowned.

“The Circle?”

Richard nodded.

“It existed before I was born.”

“Who created it?”

“My grandfather.”

“And Matteo?”

“He inherited it.”

“Then my father?”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

Richard hesitated.

“We don't know.”

Olivia stepped forward.

“We do.”

Everyone looked at her.

She held up the laptop.

“The current director is listed in the system.”

Alessandro's expression hardened.

“Who?”

Olivia clicked.

The screen displayed a name.

MARGARET MORETTI.

Alessandro stared.

“Margaret?”

His grandmother.

Dead for fifteen years.

Clara looked confused.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Olivia shook her head.

“It gets worse.”

She clicked again.

A photograph appeared.

Margaret.

But the photograph was dated—

LAST MONTH.

Alessandro's blood ran cold.

“That isn't possible.”

Olivia nodded.

“I know.”

Then another file opened.

A medical record.

PATIENT: MARGARET MORETTI

STATUS: ACTIVE

LOCATION: UNKNOWN

Alessandro stepped back.

His family wasn't simply hiding secrets.

They had been hiding people.

People who were supposed to be dead.

THE WOMAN IN THE VIDEO

Olivia opened another file.

A surveillance video.

A woman walked through a private hospital corridor.

Her face was covered.

But when she turned—

Everyone recognized her.

Margaret.

Alessandro's grandmother.

Alive.

Walking.

Speaking to a doctor.

Then she stopped.

The doctor handed her a file.

She opened it.

Inside were photographs of five children.

Clara.

Noah.

Ethan.

Livia.

Marco.

Margaret pointed at the photographs.

The doctor nodded.

Then Margaret said something.

The audio was distorted.

Olivia enhanced it.

Margaret's voice became clearer.

“Bring me the fifth child.”

The video ended.

Maya whispered:

“Who is the fifth?”

Everyone looked at each other.

Clara slowly counted.

“Livia.”

“Marco.”

“Noah.”

“Ethan.”

She stopped.

“Me?”

Alessandro looked at her.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Nobody knew.

Then Rosalie spoke.

“There were five.”

Clara turned.

“What?”

Rosalie's eyes filled with tears.

“I told you there were four.”

“You said four.”

“I lied.”

Alessandro stared.

“Why?”

Rosalie looked at Clara.

“Because I was protecting the fifth.”

THE CHILD NO ONE REMEMBERED

Rosalie opened an old wooden box.

Inside were hospital records.

Five birth certificates.

Clara.

Noah.

Ethan.

Livia.

Marco.

But the fifth certificate had no name.

Only:

BABY GIRL — SUBJECT 05

Clara stared at it.

“I don't remember another baby.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

“Who was she?”

Rosalie looked at Richard.

Richard closed his eyes.

“She was born between Livia and Marco.”

Alessandro froze.

“That means…”

“Yes.”

“Clara gave birth to three children?”

Richard nodded.

“Triplets.”

Clara's face went white.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I would remember.”

“You were unconscious.”

“Where is she?”

Richard said nothing.

Clara grabbed his arm.

“Where is my daughter?”

Richard looked at her.

“She was taken.”

“By whom?”

“Matteo.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“Why?”

“Because she was the only child who inherited all three genetic markers.”

Alessandro looked at Maya.

“But Maya already had the sequence.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Richard pointed toward the anonymous file.

“Subject 05.”

THE FIFTH CHILD

Alessandro stared at the unnamed certificate.

“Why was she hidden?”

Richard answered:

“Because she wasn't just a biological match.”

“What was she?”

“The complete genetic carrier.”

Clara's voice trembled.

“What does that mean?”

Richard explained.

“The organization had been searching for a genetic combination that could survive a procedure designed decades ago.”

Alessandro frowned.

“What procedure?”

“Regenerative therapy.”

Clara stared.

“You're talking about medicine?”

“Medicine, genetics, longevity.”

Richard looked at the children.

“Your grandfather wanted to create a treatment that could repair damaged organs.”

“That doesn't sound evil.”

“It wasn't.”

“Then what went wrong?”

“Human testing.”

Clara's face hardened.

“Children.”

Richard nodded.

“Children.”

Silence.

“They used children because their genetic structures were more adaptable.”

Alessandro's hands tightened.

“My family experimented on children?”

“Not your entire family.”

“Who?”

“The Circle.”

“Same thing.”

Richard lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

THE FILE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Olivia opened the fifth file.

Inside was one photograph.

A newborn baby.

Dark hair.

Small fingers.

A crescent-shaped birthmark behind her ear.

Clara stared.

“That mark…”

Alessandro looked at her.

“You recognize it?”

Clara touched the mark behind her own ear.

“The same one.”

Then Maya touched hers.

The same.

Livia had it.

Marco had it.

Noah had it.

Ethan had it.

All of them.

But the fifth child had a second mark.

A tiny black dot beneath the crescent.

Richard whispered:

“She was different.”

“How?”

“She could produce the complete sequence.”

“And the Circle wanted her.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she now?”

Richard looked toward the door.

Nobody answered.

Then the door opened.

A nurse stood there.

She was holding an envelope.

“This was delivered for Mr. Moretti.”

Alessandro took it.

“Who brought it?”

“I don't know.”

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman.

Twenty-three years old.

Standing beside a lake.

On the back:

SHE HAS BEEN WATCHING YOU.

Below that:

AND SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING.

Alessandro stared.

Then he noticed the woman's face.

He knew her.

She had appeared at the Moretti mansion several times.

She had worked as a temporary assistant.

She had served coffee during meetings.

She had stood beside Bianca during the wedding preparations.

Her name was—

Sofia.

SOFIA

Alessandro called security.

“Find Sofia.”

Reed checked the system.

“She left two hours ago.”

“Where?”

“Unknown.”

“Trace her phone.”

“Already did.”

“And?”

Reed's expression changed.

“She doesn't have one.”

Alessandro frowned.

“What?”

“No phone.”

“Then how did she communicate?”

Reed looked at the records.

“She used the house landline.”

“How often?”

“Every night.”

Alessandro's blood ran cold.

“From where?”

Reed looked toward the mansion.

“Your office.”

Alessandro walked quickly upstairs.

His office door was unlocked.

Inside, nothing looked disturbed.

Then he noticed the painting behind his desk.

He moved it.

A hidden compartment appeared.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Sofia.

Clara.

Livia.

Marco.

Maya.

Ethan.

Noah.

And—

Alessandro.

Photographed while sleeping.

Photographed entering his office.

Photographed kissing Clara years ago.

Photographed holding Livia as a baby.

Someone had watched him his entire life.

Then he found a final photograph.

Sofia as a newborn.

Beside her was a woman.

Clara.

Alessandro froze.

“No.”

Clara entered behind him.

She saw the photograph.

Her knees nearly collapsed.

“That…”

She touched the image.

“That is me.”

Alessandro turned.

“You knew Sofia?”

Clara shook her head.

“I don't remember.”

Rosalie entered.

She looked at the photograph.

Then began crying.

“She isn't Sofia.”

Alessandro stared.

“What?”

Rosalie whispered:

“Her real name is Elena.”

THE TRUTH ABOUT ELENA

Rosalie sat down.

“I met her twenty years ago.”

“Where?”

“At the Circle's facility.”

Clara looked horrified.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To save you.”

Rosalie took a breath.

“I was hired as a nurse.”

“And Elena?”

“She was a baby.”

“Subject 05?”

Rosalie nodded.

“She was the strongest.”

“What happened?”

“Matteo ordered her transferred.”

“To where?”

“I don't know.”

“But you found her.”

“Years later.”

“How?”

“She came to the Moretti estate.”

“Knowing who she was?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because she had no memory of her childhood.”

Clara whispered:

“Someone erased it.”

Rosalie nodded.

“They conditioned her.”

“For what?”

“To become an observer.”

Alessandro stared.

“She was spying on us.”

“Yes.”

“But she didn't know why.”

“No.”

“Who activated her?”

Rosalie looked at him.

“Bianca.”

BIANCA'S SECRET

Alessandro returned to the police station.

Bianca was sitting inside an interrogation room.

Calm.

Almost amused.

When Alessandro entered, she smiled.

“You finally figured it out.”

Alessandro sat across from her.

“Who is Elena?”

Bianca's smile disappeared.

“So you found her.”

“Who is she?”

“You know who she is.”

“Tell me.”

Bianca leaned back.

“She is the reason your family survived.”

Alessandro frowned.

“What?”

“She was supposed to kill Livia.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“But she couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because she remembered Clara.”

Alessandro stared.

“Clara?”

Bianca nodded.

“Some memories survive conditioning.”

“What did Elena remember?”

“You.”

“And Clara.”

“And the children.”

Bianca looked down.

“She remembered being held by Clara.”

Alessandro froze.

“She remembers?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't she tell us?”

“Because Matteo threatened her.”

“He's alive.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Bianca smiled.

“You still think this is about Matteo.”

Alessandro leaned forward.

“Then who?”

Bianca looked directly into his eyes.

“The Circle has no single leader anymore.”

“What?”

“It has become a network.”

“How many?”

“Hundreds.”

“Where?”

“Everywhere.”

Alessandro's face hardened.

“Then how do I stop it?”

Bianca smiled.

“You don't.”

“Why?”

“Because you're already inside it.”

THE BLOODLINE

Alessandro stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Bianca leaned forward.

“Your grandfather didn't create the Circle.”

“What?”

“He inherited it.”

“From whom?”

“Your ancestors.”

“How far back?”

“Two hundred years.”

Alessandro's face went pale.

“This isn't possible.”

Bianca smiled.

“Your family built its fortune by controlling medical patents.”

“That's not a crime.”

“No.”

She paused.

“But what they did with the research was.”

She pushed a photograph across the table.

An old family portrait.

Alessandro recognized his great-grandfather.

Behind him stood several men.

And one woman.

The same woman from the hospital video.

Margaret.

But Margaret was much younger.

Bianca pointed.

“She was the real founder.”

Alessandro stared.

“My grandmother?”

“Yes.”

“She died fifteen years ago.”

Bianca laughed.

“Everyone thinks she died.”

Alessandro's stomach turned.

“You're saying she's alive.”

“She has been alive the entire time.”

“Where?”

Bianca smiled.

“Under your house.”

THE ROOM BENEATH THE HOUSE

Alessandro returned to the mansion.

He told Reed to scan the basement.

Nothing.

Then Elena appeared.

She stood silently in the hallway.

Alessandro turned.

“You.”

She looked at him.

“My name isn't Sofia.”

“I know.”

“It's Elena.”

“I know.”

She looked frightened.

“I'm sorry.”

“For what?”

“For everything.”

“You watched my children.”

“Yes.”

“You worked for Bianca.”

“Yes.”

“You were ordered to hurt Livia.”

Elena began crying.

“Yes.”

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the stairs.

“Because she called me Mommy.”

Alessandro's expression changed.

“When?”

“Once.”

“When she was three.”

“What happened?”

“She was sick.”

Elena had been watching from the hallway.

Livia woke crying.

Elena entered.

Livia reached for her.

“Mommy.”

Elena remembered something.

A woman.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

Clara.

Her biological mother.

She had remembered.

And everything changed.

Elena whispered:

“I couldn't hurt my sister.”

Alessandro froze.

“Your sister?”

“Yes.”

She pointed upstairs.

“Livia.”

Then she looked at Clara.

“And so is she.”

Clara stared.

“Elena…”

Elena began crying.

“Mom.”

Clara's face collapsed.

She walked toward her.

“My baby?”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

Clara touched her face.

Then pulled her into her arms.

For twenty-three years, she had believed one child had been taken.

Now she understood.

Her daughter had been standing in front of her all along.

And the family finally had its fifth child back.

THE DOOR UNDER THE MANSION

Elena wiped her tears.

“There is something you need to see.”

She led them downstairs.

Past the wine cellar.

Past the old storage room.

To a wall covered with shelves.

She removed one book.

A hidden mechanism clicked.

The shelves moved.

A staircase appeared.

Alessandro stared.

“This was here the entire time?”

Elena nodded.

“My grandfather used it.”

“Matteo?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Your grandmother.”

They descended.

At the bottom was a steel door.

Elena placed her hand against the scanner.

The door opened.

Inside was a massive underground archive.

Documents.

Hard drives.

Medical equipment.

Photographs.

Thousands of files.

At the center stood a glass cabinet.

Inside was one object.

A tiny hospital bracelet.

Alessandro walked closer.

He read it.

SUBJECT 05 — ELENA

Clara covered her mouth.

She touched the glass.

“My daughter.”

Then Alessandro noticed another bracelet beside it.

SUBJECT 06 — UNKNOWN

He turned.

“What is Subject 06?”

Elena's face went pale.

“I don't know.”

A computer screen suddenly activated.

A countdown appeared.

00:59:59

Alessandro stepped forward.

“What is this?”

Elena whispered:

“The archive is being erased.”

“Can you stop it?”

“No.”

“Who started it?”

Elena stared at the screen.

Then a message appeared.

WELCOME HOME, FAMILY.

Another line followed.

YOU FOUND THE FIFTH CHILD.

Then:

NOW FIND THE SIXTH.

The countdown continued.

00:58:41

Clara looked at Alessandro.

“We have less than an hour.”

He nodded.

“Then we find the sixth child.”

And somewhere deep beneath the mansion—

another door unlocked.

A child's voice came through the darkness.

“Mom?”

Clara froze.

It was a voice she had heard once before.

Twenty-three years ago.

The voice of a baby who had never been supposed to survive.

Clara whispered:

“That's impossible.”

The voice came again.

“Mom… I'm here.”

Alessandro looked toward the darkness.

The family had thought they had found the final secret.

They were wrong.

There had never been five children.

May you like

There had been six.

And the sixth had been hidden beneath their own home.
