CHAPTER 5 — THE CHILD BENEATH THE HOUSE

“Mom…”
The voice came again.
Soft.
Barely audible.
But unmistakably human.
Clara stood completely still.
Her hand covered her mouth.
Alessandro looked at her.
“Clara?”
She couldn't answer.
The voice came from somewhere beyond the steel corridor.
“Mom…”
Clara took one step forward.
Then another.
Alessandro grabbed her wrist.
“Wait.”
She looked at him.
“That was my baby.”
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
“How?”
Tears rolled down her face.
“Because I heard that voice once.”
“When?”
“The night they took her.”
Elena stared at Clara.
“You remember?”
“Not everything.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“But I remember someone crying.”
She touched her temple.
“A baby.”
Then she whispered:
“She wasn't in the nursery.”
Alessandro frowned.
“What?”
“The other children were.”
“Then where?”
Clara opened her eyes.
“Under the hospital.”
Everyone went silent.
THE SIXTH ROOM
The countdown continued.
00:57:03
Olivia stared at the computer.
“Dad, the archive is deleting itself.”
“Can you stop it?”
“I can slow it down.”
“How long?”
“Maybe fifteen minutes.”
“Do it.”
Olivia sat at the terminal.
Her fingers moved quickly.
Alessandro turned toward the corridor.
“We're going down.”
Clara immediately followed.
Elena stopped them.
“You need to know something.”
“What?”
“The room isn't a prison.”
Alessandro frowned.
“Then what is it?”
“A laboratory.”
“For what?”
Elena looked toward the darkness.
“Memory.”
Clara stopped.
“What does that mean?”
“They didn't just study the children.”
Elena swallowed.
“They studied what children could remember.”
Alessandro's face hardened.
“Why?”
“Because the Circle discovered something.”
“What?”
“Trauma could alter memory.”
Clara's expression changed.
“They erased us.”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
“To hide what happened.”
Elena pointed down the corridor.
“Subject 06 was different.”
“How?”
“She remembered everything.”
THE GIRL BEHIND THE GLASS
They reached a second door.
Behind it was a large room.
A single bed.
A chair.
A camera.
And a glass wall.
Behind the glass stood a young woman.
She looked about twenty-three.
Long dark hair.
Pale skin.
Bare feet.
She was staring at them.
Clara stopped breathing.
The young woman slowly stepped closer.
Her eyes met Clara's.
Then she whispered:
“Mom.”
Clara collapsed.
Alessandro caught her.
“No…”
Clara struggled to stand.
“That’s her.”
Elena began crying.
“Who?”
Clara pointed.
“My daughter.”
The young woman placed her hand against the glass.
Clara placed hers on the other side.
Their hands touched through the barrier.
The girl whispered:
“You came back.”
Clara sobbed.
“I've been looking for you.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“They showed me.”
“Who?”
“Grandmother.”
Alessandro froze.
“Margaret?”
The young woman nodded.
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
The girl looked frightened.
“She is coming.”
MARGARET
The lights flickered.
A woman's voice echoed through the underground facility.
“You shouldn't have opened that door.”
Everyone turned.
Margaret Moretti stepped into the corridor.
Older.
But alive.
She wore a black dress.
Her silver hair was perfectly styled.
Her eyes were cold.
Alessandro stared at her.
“Grandmother.”
Margaret smiled.
“Alessandro.”
“You're alive.”
“I've always been alive.”
“You destroyed my family.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Clara.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
Clara stepped forward.
“You took my children.”
Margaret smiled.
“I saved them.”
“You experimented on them.”
“I studied them.”
“You stole my daughter.”
“I preserved her.”
Clara's voice broke.
“She was a child.”
Margaret's expression didn't change.
“She was extraordinary.”
Alessandro stepped between them.
“Don't come near her.”
Margaret looked at him.
“You still don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
She pointed toward Subject 06.
“You think she is your daughter.”
Clara froze.
“She is.”
Margaret smiled.
“Then ask her what she remembers.”
THE MEMORY
Subject 06 looked at Clara.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Do you remember the blue room?”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
“You do.”
“I don't.”
“You were there.”
“When?”
“The night I was born.”
Clara closed her eyes.
A memory surfaced.
Blue walls.
Bright lights.
A baby crying.
Someone shouting.
A man holding a syringe.
She gasped.
“I remember.”
Alessandro looked at her.
“What?”
“Vittorio.”
“What did he do?”
Clara trembled.
“He took the baby.”
Margaret smiled.
“And then?”
Clara stared at her.
“You told him to.”
Margaret's smile disappeared.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You watched.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
Margaret's expression became cold.
“I made a decision.”
“What decision?”
“To protect the family.”
Clara screamed:
“You destroyed it!”
Margaret didn't react.
“The Circle was collapsing.”
“So you took my children?”
“I took the children who could survive.”
“Survive what?”
Margaret looked at Subject 06.
“The future.”
THE SIXTH CHILD'S NAME
Alessandro looked at the young woman.
“What is your name?”
She hesitated.
“Amelia.”
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“Amelia.”
The young woman smiled.
“My name is Amelia.”
Alessandro looked at Margaret.
“You kept her here for twenty-three years.”
“No.”
Margaret shook her head.
“She stayed because she wanted to.”
Amelia immediately interrupted.
“That's not true.”
Margaret turned.
“Be careful.”
Amelia stepped away from the glass.
“You told me the outside world would kill me.”
“It would.”
“You told me my mother abandoned me.”
Clara's heart broke.
“I never abandoned you.”
Amelia looked at her.
“I know now.”
Margaret's expression changed.
“Who told you?”
Amelia pointed at Elena.
“She did.”
Elena nodded.
“I remembered.”
Amelia whispered:
“She showed me the records.”
Margaret stared at Elena.
“You betrayed me.”
Elena answered:
“I saved my family.”
THE ARCHIVE
Olivia's voice echoed through the intercom.
“Dad!”
Alessandro turned.
“What?”
“The archive is collapsing.”
“How long?”
“Eight minutes.”
Margaret smiled.
“You can't stop it.”
Olivia answered:
“Watch me.”
Margaret looked toward the camera.
“You're your father's daughter.”
Olivia's voice became cold.
“And you're going to prison.”
Margaret laughed.
“You think there is a prison strong enough for the Moretti family?”
Alessandro stepped forward.
“There is.”
Margaret looked at him.
“Where?”
“Anywhere I put you.”
Margaret smiled.
Then she pressed a button.
A steel door slammed shut behind Alessandro, Clara, Elena, and Amelia.
Alessandro turned.
“Margaret!”
She walked away.
Clara screamed:
“Open the door!”
Margaret didn't look back.
“You have eight minutes.”
THE TRUTH IN THE WALLS
Alessandro searched the room.
No exit.
No window.
Nothing.
Clara sat beside Amelia.
“My daughter.”
Amelia looked at her.
“You came back.”
“I promised I would.”
“You didn't know me.”
“I knew you.”
“How?”
Clara touched her face.
“A mother knows.”
Amelia began crying.
Clara pulled her close.
For the first time in twenty-three years, Amelia was held by the woman who had given her life.
Elena watched them.
Then she noticed something.
A crack in the wall.
“Wait.”
She stood.
“What?”
“There.”
She pointed.
A small metal panel.
Alessandro opened it.
Inside was a lever.
He pulled it.
Nothing.
Then Amelia spoke.
“Try the second one.”
Alessandro looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“I've been here a long time.”
She pointed.
“There are three.”
Alessandro pulled the second.
A hidden door opened.
Cold air rushed through.
Clara stared.
“Where does it lead?”
Amelia whispered:
“To the original laboratory.”
THE ORIGINAL LABORATORY
They entered.
The room looked untouched.
Old equipment.
Photographs.
Medical files.
And a massive machine.
Alessandro stared.
“What is that?”
Amelia answered:
“The memory chamber.”
“What does it do?”
“It records memories.”
“That's impossible.”
“It was twenty-three years ago.”
Alessandro looked at the machine.
“What happened here?”
Amelia walked toward it.
“They put me inside.”
Clara grabbed her hand.
“Why?”
“To erase what I knew.”
“Did it work?”
Amelia shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I wasn't afraid.”
Clara frowned.
“What does fear have to do with memory?”
Amelia looked at her.
“They discovered something.”
“What?”
“The stronger the emotional connection…”
She paused.
“…the harder the memory was to erase.”
Clara's eyes filled.
“You remembered me.”
“Every day.”
THE FINAL RECORDING
Amelia pointed toward an old monitor.
“There is one recording left.”
Alessandro turned it on.
Static.
Then a younger Margaret appeared.
Beside her stood Vittorio.
A baby lay in a crib.
Amelia.
Margaret spoke:
“Subject Six is stable.”
Vittorio nodded.
“What about the others?”
“Separated.”
“Good.”
“And Clara?”
“Memory suppression.”
“What about Alessandro?”
“Manipulation.”
Vittorio smiled.
“Then everything is ready.”
The recording changed.
A document appeared.
PHASE TWO — SUCCESSION CONTROL
Alessandro stared.
“This is the inheritance plan.”
Amelia nodded.
“They wanted your children divided.”
“Why?”
“So no one could challenge the Circle.”
The recording continued.
Vittorio said:
“Once Alessandro marries Bianca, the trust becomes accessible.”
Alessandro's face hardened.
Then Margaret asked:
“And if Clara returns?”
Vittorio smiled.
“Kill her.”
The recording ended.
Silence.
Clara closed her eyes.
“I knew it.”
Alessandro looked at her.
“They wanted you dead.”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
Clara whispered:
“Because I was the only person who knew about the sixth child.”
THE SECOND DOOR
Suddenly, the lights turned red.
A warning alarm sounded.
Olivia's voice came through the speaker.
“Dad!”
“What?”
“I found the shutdown code.”
“Give it to me.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because the system needs a genetic authorization.”
Alessandro frowned.
“Whose?”
Olivia hesitated.
“Amelia's.”
Everyone looked at Amelia.
She stepped toward the machine.
“I'll do it.”
Clara grabbed her.
“No.”
“I have to.”
“What if it hurts you?”
Amelia smiled.
“Mom, I've survived worse.”
She placed her hand against the scanner.
The machine activated.
The archive stopped deleting.
The doors unlocked.
Then every screen in the laboratory turned on.
Thousands of files appeared.
Every child.
Every experiment.
Every payment.
Every name.
Everything.
Olivia whispered through the speaker:
“We have it.”
Alessandro smiled.
“Copy everything.”
“Already doing it.”
Margaret suddenly appeared on the monitor.
She looked directly at them.
“You think you've won.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“You're finished.”
Margaret smiled.
“No.”
She held up a photograph.
A baby.
A newborn.
Another child.
Alessandro stared.
“Who is that?”
Margaret answered:
“The child you never knew existed.”
The screen went black.
THE FINAL CHILD
Clara stared at Alessandro.
“How many children did we have?”
“I don't know.”
Amelia looked at the photograph.
“I know.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Amelia's voice trembled.
“There were seven.”
Alessandro froze.
“Seven?”
Amelia nodded.
“Seven children were born.”
Clara's face went white.
“Where are the others?”
Amelia looked toward the darkness.
“Six survived.”
“And the seventh?”
Amelia swallowed.
“They told me he died.”
Alessandro's heart stopped.
“Who?”
Amelia whispered:
“Your brother.”
Alessandro stared.
“My brother?”
“Yes.”
“Matteo?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Amelia looked at the photograph.
“Daniel.”
Alessandro stepped backward.
His grandfather had another son.
A child nobody knew about.
A child whose identity had been erased.
A child who could be—
the true heir to everything.
Then Clara noticed something.
The photograph had been taken recently.
Not twenty-three years ago.
Recently.
Very recently.
Someone was still raising Daniel.
Someone was still protecting him.
And that person had just revealed the truth.
The message beneath the photograph appeared.
FIND YOUR BROTHER BEFORE THEY DO.
Alessandro looked at Clara.
She looked at him.
Their family had finally reunited.
But the Circle had one final weapon.
A missing heir.
A hidden brother.
And a secret powerful enough to destroy everything they had rebuilt.
Alessandro took Clara's hand.
“We're going to find him.”
Clara nodded.
“Together.”
Amelia stood beside them.
Then Elena.
Then Olivia.
And upstairs, Livia and Marco waited for them.
For the first time, the family wasn't running from the past.
They were going after it.
But somewhere across the city, a man opened the same photograph.
He looked at the seven children.
Then at Alessandro's face.
And smiled.
Because he knew something they didn't.
Daniel wasn't missing.
He had been watching them for years.
May you like
And tomorrow—
he would finally come home.
