CHAPTER 7 — MY HUSBAND'S SECOND LIFE

I stared at the frozen image on the screen.
The blurry figure behind Ethan, Vanessa, and Chief Hayes.
The person who had been hidden from every report.
The person who shouldn't have been there.
My brother.
Michael Bennett.
My own family.
My own blood.
The person who had visited me after the accident.
The person who sat beside my hospital bed and told me:
“Don’t worry, Laura. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
The memory made my stomach turn.
Because now I wondered…
Was he protecting me?
Or was he making sure I stayed quiet?
“Laura…”
Noah’s voice pulled me back.
“Are you sure that’s your brother?”
I nodded slowly.
“I would recognize him anywhere.”
Sarah zoomed in on the image.
“The quality is terrible, but the shape, height, and clothing match.”
My hands began shaking.
“Why would Michael be there?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew the answer was terrifying.
He wasn't there by accident.
The next morning, I called Michael.
My hand hovered over the phone for almost a minute.
Part of me wanted to believe there was another explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A coincidence.
Anything.
Because accepting the truth meant accepting that the people closest to me had betrayed me.
But the woman trapped inside that elevator had already learned something important.
Love does not protect you from the truth.
Sometimes love hides it.
Michael answered after two rings.
“Laura?”
His voice immediately softened.
“How are you feeling?”
I closed my eyes.
Normal.
He sounded normal.
Like he wasn't standing inside a conspiracy video.
“I'm okay.”
A pause.
“You sound different.”
I looked out the hospital window.
“I found something.”
The silence on the other end lasted half a second too long.
“What did you find?”
There it was.
Not concern.
Curiosity.
Fear.
“You tell me.”
“Laura…”
“I saw you.”
Another silence.
“I saw you in the elevator control room.”
The line went completely quiet.
Then Michael spoke.
“I don’t know what you think you saw.”
I almost smiled.
The same sentence Ethan used.
The same sentence Vanessa would probably use.
Everyone involved in a lie eventually learned the same words.
“Why were you there?”
Michael sighed.
“I was helping.”
“Helping who?”
“Helping Ethan.”
My heart sank.
“You helped him?”
“Laura, you don’t understand.”
“No.”
My voice hardened.
“I understand perfectly.”
“You were always too trusting.”
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
I trusted too easily.
I trusted Ethan.
I trusted my family.
I trusted the people who smiled while they destroyed me.
Michael lowered his voice.
“Listen to me carefully.”
Something about his tone made me nervous.
“Stop asking questions.”
I froze.
“Is that a threat?”
“No.”
But he answered too quickly.
“It’s a warning.”
“A warning from my brother?”
“A warning from someone who knows what happens when people get too close to the truth.”
I felt a chill.
“Michael…”
“I’m sorry, Laura.”
Then he hung up.
That afternoon, Noah arrived with new information.
He looked angry.
Not frustrated.
Angry.
“I found Ethan’s financial records.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“Hidden accounts.”
My stomach tightened.
“How much?”
“Over two million dollars.”
I stared.
“From where?”
“That’s the problem.”
He placed the documents down.
“The money came from a private company.”
I read the name.
Cole Security Solutions.
Vanessa.
Her company.
“Ethan was being paid by Vanessa?”
Noah shook his head.
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
“The payments started five years ago.”
Five years.
Before the affair.
Before the elevator.
Before everything.
I looked at the documents.
“What could they have been working on for five years?”
Noah didn't answer.
Because the truth was beginning to reveal itself.
This wasn't a recent betrayal.
It was a second life.
A hidden life.
One Ethan had been living while pretending to be my husband.
Sarah arrived later that evening.
She carried a file.
“We found something about Ethan’s past.”
She placed it on the table.
Inside were old firefighter records.
I read the first page.
Incident Report: Station 14 Rescue Failure.
Date:
Ten years ago.
My eyes moved down.
Captain in charge:
Ethan Bennett.
Fatality:
Daniel Cole.
Vanessa’s brother.
The firefighter who died.
I looked at Sarah.
“Was Ethan responsible?”
She hesitated.
“Officially?”
“No.”
“But?”
Sarah sighed.
“But several people believed the report was changed.”
My heart stopped.
“Changed?”
“The original report disappeared.”
“Who replaced it?”
Sarah looked at me.
“The same people now connected to the elevator collapse.”
Everything started connecting.
Daniel Cole died.
Vanessa blamed Ethan.
Chief Hayes covered something up.
Michael helped them.
And somehow…
I became the target.
But why?
What did my death solve?
That night, I went through old memories.
Wedding photos.
Family vacations.
Pregnancy announcements.
Every picture looked different now.
Because every smile had a shadow behind it.
Then I found something.
A photo from five years ago.
A charity event.
Ethan standing beside Vanessa.
I had seen it before.
But I never noticed the person in the background.
Michael.
Again.
Always nearby.
Always watching.
A message appeared on my phone.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
"Your husband didn't choose Vanessa because he loved her."
Another message followed.
"He chose her because she knows the truth about Daniel Cole."
Then a third.
"But your brother knows the truth too."
My breathing stopped.
Because suddenly, the biggest question wasn't:
Why did Ethan betray me?
It was:
Why did everyone around me need me gone?
The next day, I confronted Ethan.
He arrived expecting anger.
Instead, he found calm.
That scared him.
“You've been investigating.”
It wasn't a question.
“Yes.”
His face changed.
“Laura, stop.”
“Why?”
“Because you don't understand what you're uncovering.”
I stepped closer.
“No, Ethan.”
My voice was steady.
“I understand now.”
He looked at me.
“You had another life.”
Silence.
“A life with Vanessa.”
His eyes dropped.
“You had secrets.”
Silence.
“You let me believe I was your entire world.”
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“But I was only the part of your life you wanted people to see.”
For the first time…
Ethan looked broken.
Not guilty.
Broken.
“I never wanted this to happen.”
I stared at him.
“Then why did it?”
He whispered:
“Because ten years ago…”
A pause.
“Daniel Cole didn't die because of a mistake.”
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?”
Ethan looked toward the door.
Like he was afraid someone was listening.
Then he whispered:
“Daniel was killed.”
I froze.
“Who killed him?”
Ethan looked at me.
And the answer on his face terrified me.
Because he wasn't afraid of Vanessa.
He wasn't afraid of Chief Hayes.
He wasn't even afraid of prison.
He was afraid of one name.
One person.
The person who had controlled everything from the beginning.
Before he could speak…
The hospital lights went out.
The room went dark.
A crash came from the hallway.
Then a voice whispered:
“Laura Bennett…”
My blood turned cold.
“You should have died in that elevator.”
Someone stepped into the darkness.
May you like
And I realized the nightmare was not over.
It had only begun.
