CHAPTER 13 — MY HUSBAND'S FINAL BETRAYAL

The scream that left my throat didn't sound like my own.

It was the sound of a mother losing the one thing she would die to protect.

Emma was gone.

The crib was empty.

The room that had held my daughter's first breaths was now filled with silence.

A silence more terrifying than the seven hours I spent trapped inside that elevator.

Because back then…

I was fighting to survive.

Now…

I was fighting for someone who couldn't fight for herself.

“No…”

I rushed to the empty crib.

My hands touched the blanket where Emma had been sleeping only moments before.

Still warm.

Still carrying her scent.

A thousand thoughts attacked my mind.

Who took her?

How long had they been watching?

How did they get past security?

Why her?

Why my baby?

“Laura.”

Ethan grabbed my shoulder.

I turned around and pushed him away.

“Don't touch me.”

His face fell.

“I’m going to find her.”

I stared at him.

The man who had promised to protect me.

The man who had failed me when I needed him most.

The man who had chosen another woman while his pregnant wife was dying underground.

“You already had your chance.”

The words hurt him.

Good.

Because I had been hurt enough.

Police flooded the hospital.

The maternity floor became a crime scene.

Sarah questioned every security guard.

Noah reviewed every camera.

But the result was the same.

Someone had planned everything.

The cameras were disabled.

The security system was overridden.

The guards were distracted.

This wasn't a kidnapping.

It was an operation.

A professional operation.

Then Noah found something.

“Laura.”

His voice changed.

I knew immediately.

“What?”

He looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“We found the person who accessed the hospital system.”

My heart tightened.

“Michael?”

Noah shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone became silent.

“Then who?”

Noah slowly answered:

“Ethan.”

The room froze.

I stared at my husband.

“No.”

Ethan looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.”

Sarah turned the computer toward him.

“Your credentials were used.”

“I didn't do this.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

Ethan stepped forward.

“I swear.”

I looked at him.

The worst part was…

I didn't know.

That was the most painful realization.

After everything…

I no longer knew when Ethan was telling the truth.

“Laura, listen to me.”

I looked at him.

“You had access.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Project Orion.”

“Yes.”

“You worked with Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me for years.”

His silence answered.

“And now my daughter disappears using your identity.”

He looked devastated.

“I would never hurt Emma.”

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted the old Ethan back.

But the old Ethan was the man who promised to protect me.

And he wasn't there when I needed him.

The police asked Ethan to come with them for questioning.

Before leaving, he stopped.

He looked at me.

“Laura.”

I didn't answer.

“I know you hate me.”

I remained silent.

“But please believe one thing.”

His voice broke.

“I failed you.”

A pause.

“But I would never fail her.”

He looked toward where Emma's crib had been.

“I will bring our daughter home.”

After he left, Sarah found another piece of evidence.

A message sent from Ethan's account.

A location.

A meeting point.

Scheduled for tonight.

The recipient:

Michael Bennett.

My stomach turned.

“So Ethan was working with Michael.”

Sarah shook her head.

“We don't know.”

Noah looked at the message.

“Or someone wants us to think that.”

Three hours later, Ethan escaped.

The police vehicle transporting him was attacked.

No weapons.

No injuries.

Just a perfectly planned distraction.

By the time officers recovered…

Ethan was gone.

The news spread instantly.

FIREFIGHTER CAPTAIN ETHAN BENNETT ESCAPES POLICE CUSTODY.

The same media that called him a hero now called him a criminal.

The city turned against him overnight.

And I…

I didn't know what to believe anymore.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice.

Ethan.

My heart stopped.

“Laura.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“You took Emma.”

Silence.

That silence destroyed me.

“Tell me you didn't.”

“Laura…”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“Tell me my husband didn't steal our daughter.”

A long pause.

Then Ethan whispered:

“I didn't take her.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then why did you disappear?”

“Because if I stayed, they would kill me.”

“And if you leave?”

“Then maybe I can save her.”

I hated that part of me believed him.

Because even after everything…

I knew Ethan loved Emma.

The question was:

Was love enough?

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

The answer surprised me.

“What?”

“I was following Michael.”

“Why?”

“Because I finally understood.”

A pause.

“Michael isn't working for Project Orion.”

I frowned.

“Then who?”

Ethan's voice became lower.

“He's trying to destroy it.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Michael took Emma because he knows something.”

“What?”

“The truth about your father.”

I sat down.

“What truth?”

Ethan took a breath.

“Your father didn't create Project Orion.”

“Then why did Michael say he did?”

“Because that's what everyone was meant to believe.”

My mind raced.

“Then who created it?”

Silence.

Then Ethan said:

“Your mother.”

I couldn't speak.

My mother had been dead for twelve years.

She was the quiet one.

The gentle one.

The person who stayed away from conflict.

“No.”

“Laura…”

“No!”

I couldn't accept it.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I was.”

Then Ethan said the sentence that broke something inside me.

“Your mother wasn't a victim of Project Orion.”

A pause.

“She was one of its creators.”

Everything changed.

My entire life.

My memories.

My family.

My childhood.

All of it became a question.

“Where is Emma?”

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A location hidden inside Project Orion files.”

“Where?”

Ethan hesitated.

“Your childhood home.”

I froze.

“My parents' old house?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because that's where Project Orion began.”

The call ended.

I looked at Noah and Sarah.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

The truth wasn't hidden in the fire department.

It wasn't hidden in the mayor's office.

It wasn't hidden with Ethan or Vanessa.

It was hidden in my own past.

That night, we went to my childhood home.

The house had been abandoned for years.

Dust covered everything.

The rooms felt like ghosts.

I walked through the hallway where I grew up.

Then I saw it.

My father's old office.

The same room where he spent endless nights writing.

The same room where he told me:

“Never trust a story with only one side.”

Behind the bookshelf, we found a hidden door.

Inside was a small room.

A secret room.

And inside…

Hundreds of files.

Photos.

Recordings.

Documents.

But one file was sitting alone on the desk.

My name written on it.

LAURA BENNETT — FINAL SUBJECT

I opened it.

The first page made me collapse.

A photograph.

Me.

As a baby.

And underneath:

PROJECT ORION PHASE ONE: ORIGINAL TEST SUBJECT

I couldn't breathe.

I wasn't investigating Project Orion.

I wasn't discovering it.

I was created because of it.

Then the old computer in the room turned on.

A video automatically played.

My mother's face appeared on the screen.

A woman I hadn't seen in twelve years.

She looked directly at me.

And she said:

“Laura…”

A pause.

“If you are watching this, it means they failed to erase you.”

I stepped closer.

My mother's voice continued:

“You need to know the truth.”

She looked terrified.

“Your daughter is not the heir of Project Orion.”

A pause.

“She is the reason Project Orion was created.”

The screen went black.

Everyone stood frozen.

Then one final message appeared.

"PHASE THREE ACTIVATED."

And below it:

"THE MOTHER HAS RETURNED."

I looked at Ethan.

At Noah.

At Sarah.

Nobody spoke.

Because the impossible truth was becoming clear.

My mother wasn't dead.

May you like

She was alive.

And she had been waiting for me to discover everything.
