CHAPTER 15 — THE SECRET ETHAN HID BEFORE OUR WEDDING

The abandoned facility became completely silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes before something breaks.

Everyone was staring at Ethan.

My mother.

Noah.

Sarah.

And me.

Especially me.

Because after everything I had discovered…

After the elevator.

The affair.

The lies.

The secrets.

I thought I had already seen the worst side of my husband.

I was wrong.

“Ethan.”

My voice was barely a whisper.

“What did she mean?”

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

Because silence had become Ethan's second language.

Whenever the truth came close…

He disappeared behind it.

“Look at me.”

Slowly, he raised his eyes.

And what I saw terrified me.

Regret.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Regret.

My mother stepped forward.

“You deserve to know everything, Laura.”

I looked at her.

“You disappeared for twelve years.”

Her face fell.

“You’re right.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me build a life with a man who was hiding everything from me.”

A tear appeared in her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Then why should I trust anything you say?”

She accepted my anger.

Because she knew she deserved it.

“Because this time, I have no reason to lie.”

She looked at Ethan.

“The night before your wedding, Project Orion activated a final evaluation.”

My heart tightened.

“Evaluation?”

She nodded.

“They wanted to know one thing.”

“What?”

“Who Ethan Bennett would choose when forced to make an impossible decision.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Like he had been waiting ten years for this moment.

My mother continued.

“Project Orion had discovered a threat against you.”

I froze.

“Against me?”

“Yes.”

“From who?”

She looked at Ethan.

“He knows.”

Everyone turned.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“I was told someone was planning to kill Laura after the wedding.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“I received information that there was an assassination plan.”

I stared.

“And you didn't tell me?”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because they said if you knew, you would become the target immediately.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So you protected me by lying?”

His eyes filled with pain.

“I thought I was.”

“Who was the target?”

Ethan looked away.

And that was when I understood.

There was someone else.

Someone who paid the price.

“Ethan.”

My voice became colder.

“Who died?”

The room froze.

Finally, he spoke.

“Daniel Cole.”

The name hit me like a physical blow.

Daniel.

The firefighter whose death started everything.

The man Vanessa spent years trying to avenge.

The man my father tried to expose.

The man whose death was connected to every secret.

“You're saying Daniel died because of you?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Yes.”

“No.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

Her face was filled with shock.

“You told me Daniel was killed by the system.”

Ethan looked at her.

“He was.”

“Then why are you saying this?”

His voice cracked.

“Because I was part of the system.”

For ten years, Ethan carried the truth.

And for ten years, everyone believed Daniel was just another victim.

But the truth was worse.

Daniel wasn't just betrayed.

He was sacrificed.

Ethan explained.

The night before our wedding, Project Orion gave him a choice.

Protect Laura.

Or expose the operation.

If he exposed them…

They would come after me.

If he stayed silent…

They promised to remove the people threatening me.

Including Daniel.

I stared at him.

“You chose.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“You chose me.”

“Yes.”

“But Daniel died.”

“Yes.”

My voice broke.

“And you lived with that?”

Every muscle in his face tightened.

“Every single day.”

Vanessa looked devastated.

“You knew.”

She looked at Ethan.

“You knew my brother was going to die.”

Ethan couldn't answer.

Because there was no answer that could fix it.

I walked away.

I needed air.

I needed space.

Because suddenly my entire marriage became a question.

Did Ethan love me?

Or did he love the idea of saving me?

Was I his wife?

Or was I his redemption?

Outside the facility, Noah found me.

“You okay?”

I laughed softly.

“No.”

He nodded.

“I wouldn't be either.”

I looked at him.

“Do you hate him?”

Noah was quiet.

Then:

“I hate what he did.”

A pause.

“But I also know something.”

“What?”

“He kept choosing the wrong way to do the right thing.”

I looked back at the facility.

Ethan was standing alone inside.

The man who saved strangers.

The man who abandoned his wife.

The man who carried guilt for ten years.

A hero.

A betrayer.

Both were true.

Then my mother appeared beside me.

“Laura.”

I didn't look at her.

“What else don't I know?”

She was silent.

Too silent.

“Mom.”

She took a breath.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“Daniel wasn't the only person Ethan failed.”

I turned.

“What does that mean?”

She looked toward the facility.

“Your father.”

My heart stopped.

“My father?”

She nodded.

“Your father discovered what Ethan did.”

I frowned.

“Then why didn't he expose him?”

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Because he knew the truth.”

“What truth?”

She whispered:

“Ethan didn't betray Daniel because he wanted power.”

A pause.

“He betrayed him because someone he loved was being held hostage.”

I froze.

“Who?”

My mother looked at me.

“You.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does.”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“Because I was never kidnapped.”

My mother looked away.

And that reaction terrified me.

“Laura…”

“What?”

She whispered:

“You were.”

The world went silent.

“What are you talking about?”

She opened an old file.

Inside was a photograph.

A young girl.

Me.

Eight years old.

Standing beside a hospital bed.

My own handwriting on the back.

“The day they told me Dad was sick.”

My mother pointed to the date.

“The same day Project Orion began.”

I looked at her.

“I don't understand.”

She swallowed.

“Your father wasn't sick.”

My blood went cold.

“What?”

“He was poisoned.”

No one spoke.

Because suddenly everything changed.

My father's death.

My mother's disappearance.

Ethan's choices.

Project Orion.

Everything.

“Who poisoned him?”

My mother looked at me.

And whispered:

“The same person who took Emma.”

My heart stopped.

“Michael?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“The person Michael has been protecting you from.”

Then every light inside the facility turned red.

An alarm started.

Noah looked at his phone.

“We have movement.”

Sarah checked the security feed.

Her face changed.

“Someone breached the facility.”

“Who?”

She turned the screen toward us.

A live camera showed a person walking through the entrance.

A person wearing a black coat.

A person everyone thought was gone.

My mother stepped back.

“No…”

I looked at her.

“Who is it?”

Her voice trembled.

“Someone who knows the beginning of Project Orion.”

The figure stepped into the light.

And I saw the face.

The face from every childhood memory.

The face from every family photo.

The face I thought I would never see again.

My father.

WILLIAM BENNETT.

Alive.

Standing ten feet away.

And then he said:

“Laura…”

May you like

A pause.

“I’m sorry.”
