CHAPTER 12 — THE WOMAN WHO WANTED ME GONE

The message remained on every screen.
Three lines.
Three sentences.
Three words that changed the meaning of everything.
REMOVE THE MOTHER.
RECOVER THE CHILD.
PHASE TWO BEGINS.
For years, I thought my enemies wanted me silent.
I was wrong.
They didn't want me silent.
They wanted me erased.
The hospital went into lockdown within minutes.
Security guards filled the hallway.
Police officers surrounded the entrance.
Doctors were told not to allow anyone near Emma without authorization.
But even with all that protection…
I still felt unsafe.
Because the people hunting me weren't strangers.
They were people who knew my life.
My husband.
My brother.
My family's history.
My father's secrets.
They knew everything about me.
And I knew almost nothing about them.
Ethan stood near the window, staring outside.
He looked like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.
“Who created Project Orion?”
I asked.
He didn't answer.
“Ethan.”
His shoulders lowered.
“I don't know.”
I looked at him.
“After everything you've done, you expect me to believe that?”
“I know who was involved.”
“Who?”
He turned around.
“People above me.”
The answer frustrated me.
Because everyone always had someone above them.
Ethan blamed Chief Hayes.
Chief Hayes blamed the mayor.
The mayor blamed the system.
Everyone had an excuse.
Everyone except the people who died.
Then Vanessa arrived.
The moment she entered the room, Ethan became tense.
I noticed.
Of course I noticed.
I noticed everything now.
The smallest movements.
The smallest pauses.
The things people tried to hide.
Vanessa looked at Emma.
Then at me.
“I need to tell you the truth.”
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that after they lie.”
She accepted the accusation.
Because she deserved it.
“I know.”
Vanessa sat down.
For the first time, she wasn't confident.
She wasn't the woman on television.
She wasn't the woman the world called a victim.
She looked like someone carrying a burden too heavy to hold.
“I was the reason Ethan got involved with Project Orion.”
My eyes narrowed.
“What?”
She looked at Ethan.
“Tell her.”
Ethan remained silent.
Vanessa continued.
“Ten years ago, after Daniel died, I wanted revenge.”
The room became still.
“I blamed Ethan.”
I looked at him.
“And you should have.”
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Vanessa continued.
“But then I discovered the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That Ethan wasn't the person who ordered Daniel's death.”
A pause.
“He was the person they used.”
I crossed my arms.
“And that made you forgive him?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“I hated him.”
Her voice cracked.
“I hated him for years.”
“Then why were you with him?”
She looked away.
“Because I needed access.”
The answer was brutal.
Honest.
“I needed to know what really happened.”
Everything suddenly became clearer.
The affair.
The secret meetings.
The connection between Ethan and Vanessa.
It wasn't love.
It was a dangerous alliance built on guilt and revenge.
But that didn't make Ethan innocent.
And it didn't make Vanessa innocent.
People could have good reasons and still do terrible things.
“You knew about the elevator.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
My heart hardened.
“Did you know I would be inside?”
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
The room went quiet.
Even Ethan looked at her.
“You knew?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“I knew the plan.”
My voice became cold.
“And you did nothing.”
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“I tried.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You watched.”
“I was trying to find proof.”
“And I was trapped underground!”
My voice broke.
“My daughter almost died!”
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.”
“No, you don't.”
I held Emma closer.
“You don't know what it feels like to hear the person you love walk away while you are dying.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Because that was the truth.
The truth everyone avoided.
Not the documents.
Not the conspiracies.
Not the politics.
The human damage.
Then Vanessa said something unexpected.
“I was supposed to be the one in that elevator.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She nodded.
“The original plan was different.”
Sarah immediately stepped forward.
“Explain.”
Vanessa took a breath.
“The elevator was meant to trap me.”
Everyone froze.
“Why?”
“Because I had the evidence.”
My mind raced.
“Then why was I there?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because they changed the plan.”
“Who?”
Her eyes moved toward Ethan.
Then away.
“The person controlling Project Orion.”
The room became silent.
“Who?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Michael.”
My brother.
Again.
“No.”
The word left my mouth before I could stop it.
Vanessa looked at me sadly.
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I was.”
I looked at Ethan.
“Tell me she’s lying.”
Ethan couldn't look at me.
That was the answer.
My memories started falling apart.
Michael teaching me to ride a bike.
Michael protecting me after our parents died.
Michael telling me:
“You’re my little sister. I’ll always protect you.”
All those memories.
Were they real?
Or were they just another carefully designed lie?
Noah entered suddenly.
His face was pale.
“We have a problem.”
Sarah turned.
“What happened?”
“The hospital security system was accessed.”
“By who?”
Noah looked at me.
“Your brother.”
My heart stopped.
“Where is he?”
Noah swallowed.
“He was just seen entering the maternity floor.”
Everyone moved.
I grabbed Emma.
“No.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Laura, stay here.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
For the first time, he saw something different in me.
Not fear.
Not weakness.
Determination.
“I spent seven hours waiting for someone to save me.”
I looked at everyone.
“I won't wait again.”
We rushed into the hallway.
Security alarms were screaming.
Doctors were running.
Lights were flashing.
Then I saw him.
Michael.
Standing at the end of the corridor.
Holding a folder.
My brother.
The person I trusted.
The person who betrayed me.
“Michael.”
He looked at me.
And for a moment…
He looked sad.
Not guilty.
Sad.
“Laura.”
My voice shook.
“Why?”
He looked at Emma.
Then at me.
“Because you were never supposed to know.”
The hallway went silent.
“Know what?”
He held up the folder.
“The truth about your father.”
I stepped closer.
“What about my father?”
Michael's expression changed.
“Your father wasn't investigating Project Orion.”
A pause.
“He created it.”
The world stopped.
No.
Impossible.
My father.
The man who taught me justice.
The man who told me truth mattered.
The man I loved.
Michael opened the folder.
Inside was an old document.
A signature.
My father's signature.
At the bottom:
PROJECT ORION — FOUNDING ARCHITECT
I couldn't breathe.
Everything I believed about my family collapsed.
Again.
Michael looked at me.
“I tried to protect you.”
I stared at him.
“By killing me?”
His face broke.
“No.”
A tear fell.
“By making sure you never found out.”
Then the hospital lights went out.
Again.
The same darkness.
The same terror.
The same feeling as the elevator.
But this time…
I wasn't trapped.
I was surrounded by enemies.
And when the emergency lights returned…
Michael was gone.
The folder was gone.
And Emma…
Was missing.
I screamed.
Not a cry.
Not fear.
A mother's scream.
Because the nightmare I had feared had happened.
They didn't come for me.
They came for my daughter.
On the floor where Emma's crib had been…
There was only one thing left.
A note.
Written in black ink.
Six words.
"THE ORION PROJECT HAS ITS HEIR."
And in that moment, I understood.
They didn't want my daughter dead.
They wanted her.
Because to them…
May you like
Emma wasn't a baby.
She was the final piece of Project Orion.
