CHAPTER 19 — THE LAST PERSON BEHIND PROJECT ORION

Three months.

That was how long I had believed the nightmare was over.

Three months since Mayor Alexander Whitmore was arrested.

Three months since Project Orion was exposed.

Three months since my daughter was returned to my arms.

For the first time in years…

I slept without checking the locks five times.

I walked outside without looking over my shoulder.

I held Emma without wondering if someone was watching us.

I thought we had won.

I was wrong.

The photograph sat on my kitchen table.

A single image.

A single message.

“PROJECT ORION HAD A BACKUP.”

I stared at it for hours.

Because the person standing beside my mother wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't the mayor.

It wasn't Ethan.

It wasn't Michael.

It was someone who had stood beside us when everything collapsed.

Someone who helped uncover the truth.

Someone we trusted.

Detective Sarah Mitchell.

My hands went cold.

“No…”

The word came out quietly.

It couldn't be.

Sarah was the person who fought for me.

The person who helped expose the corruption.

The person who risked her career.

The person who found the files.

The person who stayed when everyone else left.

But the photograph didn't lie.

My mother stood in an old laboratory.

And beside her…

Was Sarah.

Younger.

Different.

Wearing a Project Orion identification badge.

The front door opened.

Noah walked in.

He immediately saw my face.

“What happened?”

I didn't answer.

I simply handed him the photograph.

The moment he saw it…

His expression changed.

“Where did you get this?”

“Someone sent it.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

He looked at the image again.

“Laura…”

His voice became serious.

“This could be fake.”

“I know.”

A pause.

“But what if it isn't?”

That was the problem.

After Project Orion…

Anything was possible.

A lie could look like truth.

Truth could look like a lie.

People could be victims and villains at the same time.

Ethan proved that.

Vanessa proved that.

My own family proved that.

“We need to talk to Sarah.”

Noah nodded.

“But carefully.”

“Why?”

“Because if this is real…”

He looked at the photo.

“We might be walking into another trap.”

Sarah arrived two hours later.

The moment she entered the house, she knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

I placed the photograph on the table.

Her face changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

That was enough.

I didn't need an explanation.

I already knew.

“Sarah…”

My voice was quiet.

“How long?”

She didn't answer.

“How long were you part of Project Orion?”

Her eyes closed.

And for a moment…

She looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Exhausted.

“Since the beginning.”

The room became silent.

Noah stepped back.

“You were involved?”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

I felt something break inside me.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

Because I had trusted her.

“You knew everything.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about my father.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the elevator.”

Her silence answered.

“Did you know I would be trapped?”

“No.”

Her answer came immediately.

“I swear.”

I studied her face.

For the first time…

I wasn't looking for lies.

I was looking for pain.

And I saw it.

“Then why?”

Sarah sat down.

“Because I was trying to destroy Project Orion from inside.”

Noah frowned.

“Inside?”

Sarah nodded.

“I joined the investigation division ten years ago.”

A pause.

“But I wasn't investigating Project Orion.”

She looked at me.

“I was investigating the people who stole it.”

She explained.

When my father discovered Project Orion had been corrupted, he needed someone inside the system.

Someone who could gather evidence.

Someone nobody would suspect.

That person was Sarah.

“Then why hide it from us?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because every person who knew the complete truth became a target.”

She looked at me.

“Your father tried to protect you.”

“My mother tried to protect me.”

“Michael tried to protect you.”

“Ethan tried to protect you.”

She paused.

“And all of them hurt you while doing it.”

The words were painful because they were true.

Everyone claimed they were protecting me.

And everyone left scars.

“Who sent the photograph?”

Sarah looked at it.

Then her face changed.

“I don't know.”

That scared me.

Because Sarah knew everything.

If she didn't know…

Someone else did.

Then Noah noticed something.

A reflection in the photograph.

A small detail.

Behind Sarah and my mother…

A person standing in the doorway.

Partially hidden.

“Zoom in.”

I grabbed the photo.

Noah enlarged it.

The image became blurry.

But the face slowly appeared.

Nobody spoke.

Because we recognized him.

Daniel Cole.

Vanessa was called immediately.

When she saw the image…

She collapsed.

“No.”

She touched the screen.

“That’s impossible.”

“Daniel is dead.”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then who is that?”

Nobody answered.

The investigation reopened.

The evidence was impossible.

Unless…

Daniel had never died.

We returned to the original warehouse.

The place where Daniel supposedly died.

The place where everything began.

Inside the ruins, we found something.

A hidden underground room.

Not in the original reports.

Not in any investigation files.

A room beneath the fire.

Inside were dozens of files.

And one recording.

Daniel's voice.

“If someone finds this…”

A pause.

“Then they finally know the truth.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Daniel continued:

“I wasn't killed.”

Silence.

“I was removed.”

My heart raced.

Removed.

Just like my mother.

Just like my father.

Just like everyone connected to Project Orion.

“Project Orion didn't eliminate people.”

Daniel said.

“It recruited them.”

The recording continued.

“The people who disappeared weren't victims.”

A pause.

“They were the people who refused to become weapons.”

Then Daniel said the sentence that changed everything.

“The real creator of Project Orion was never Laura.”

Everyone froze.

“It wasn't William Bennett.”

“It wasn't Elizabeth Bennett.”

“It wasn't Mayor Whitmore.”

A final pause.

“Project Orion was created by someone who understood one thing better than anyone.”

The recording ended.

On the screen appeared a name.

A name nobody expected.

SARAH MITCHELL.

The room went silent.

Sarah stepped backward.

“No.”

Her face turned pale.

“That’s impossible.”

Noah looked at her.

“Sarah…”

She shook her head.

“I didn't create it.”

Then another file opened automatically.

A document.

The original Project Orion founding agreement.

At the bottom…

A signature.

SARAH MITCHELL

I stared at her.

The woman who saved me.

The woman who betrayed me.

The woman who might have created everything.

Sarah whispered:

“I don't remember signing that.”

And then…

A voice came from the doorway.

A voice we all knew.

“Of course you don't.”

Everyone turned.

My mother stood there.

But this time…

She wasn't alone.

Behind her was a man.

Older.

Calm.

Smiling.

The man from the photograph.

Daniel Cole.

Alive.

He looked at me.

Then at Sarah.

Then said:

“The truth is much worse than you think.”

A pause.

“Because Sarah Mitchell wasn't the creator.”

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“She was the first person Project Orion was created to stop.”
