CHAPTER 6: The Father Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The words on the photograph haunted Ethan all night.

“HE NEVER LEFT.”

Four simple words.

But they destroyed everything Ethan believed.

His father was dead.

He had seen the funeral.

He had watched the coffin disappear beneath the ground.

He had stood beside his mother’s grave.

He had mourned William Blackwood for five years.

Yet now

His fingerprints appeared at a crime scene.

A photograph was planted beside his pregnant wife.

And someone was sending messages only his family would understand.

Ethan stood in the hospital hallway, staring through the glass window of Emma’s room.

She was sleeping.

One hand rested protectively over her pregnant belly.

Even after everything

Even after being betrayed.

She was still fighting.

For their child.

For the truth.

For herself.

And Ethan realized something painful.

Emma had spent years trying to prove she belonged in his family.

But the truth was

His family had never deserved her.

Detective Ryan approached quietly.

“You need to prepare yourself.”

Ethan looked at him.

“For what?”

Ryan glanced at the evidence folder.

“The possibility that William Blackwood’s death was staged.”

The words felt impossible.

“My father died.”

Ryan nodded.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But right now, we have more questions than answers.”

Noah stood nearby.

Silent.

Watching Ethan struggle.

For years, Noah hated the Blackwood name.

He hated William.

He hated the family that erased him.

But seeing Ethan now

He realized something.

Ethan wasn’t his enemy.

He was another victim.

“You really loved him.”

Ethan looked at Noah.

“What?”

“Your father.”

Ethan looked away.

“He wasn’t perfect.”

A pause.

“But he was still my father.”

Noah lowered his eyes.

“I spent twenty years believing he abandoned me.”

Silence.

“Maybe he was trying to protect us both.”

Before Ethan could answer

Emma’s hospital room door opened.

She was awake.

“You two need to see something.”

Everyone turned.

Emma held a small envelope.

Ryan immediately recognized it.

“Where did you get that?”

Emma looked at him.

“It was hidden inside the photograph frame.”

Ethan frowned.

“What photograph?”

“The one left by the intruder.”

Ryan carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was an old letter.

The paper was aged.

The handwriting was familiar.

William Blackwood.

Again.

Ethan read it.

His hands slowly began shaking.

Because this letter was not written to him.

It was written to Emma.

“Emma Carter,

If you are reading this, then my family has finally shown you who they truly are.”

Emma looked confused.

“Why would your father write to me?”

Nobody answered.

Ethan continued reading.

“You were never chosen because of your background.”

“You were chosen because you were the only person who could expose the truth.”

Ethan looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Ryan took the letter.

His expression became serious.

“Emma
”

She looked at him.

“Your relationship with the Blackwood family may not have started when you married Ethan.”

Everyone became silent.

The letter continued.

“Years ago, I discovered that Margaret had created a hidden trust account.”

“She used it to control the inheritance of anyone who challenged her.”

“The final beneficiary was not Ethan.”

“It was Emma Carter.”

Emma stepped back.

“Me?”

Ethan looked shocked.

Noah stared at the letter.

“This makes no sense.”

Ryan looked at the signature.

“It does if William knew something.”

Then another line caught their attention.

“Emma, your father was the only person who helped me uncover Margaret’s crimes.”

Emma froze.

“My father?”

She whispered.

“My father died when I was young.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Are you sure?”

Emma stared.

“What do you mean?”

Ryan opened another file.

A file he had kept hidden.

“I investigated your family background after the mansion incident.”

He placed documents on the table.

“There are missing records.”

Emma’s face changed.

“What records?”

“Your father’s death certificate.”

A pause.

“It was altered.”

The room went silent.

Ethan looked at Emma.

“Emma
”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“My mother told me he died.”

Ryan nodded.

“She believed that.”

“But?”

“But someone wanted everyone to believe it.”

Suddenly

Everything connected.

Emma.

The Blackwoods.

The hidden inheritance.

The missing records.

The staged death.

The attacks.

This was never about a pregnant woman joining a wealthy family.

It started long before Emma met Ethan.

At the Blackwood mansion

Margaret received the news.

William’s letter had been found.

Her expression finally broke.

“You idiots.”

Claire looked nervous.

“What happened?”

Margaret turned slowly.

“Emma found the truth.”

Claire swallowed.

“What truth?”

Margaret whispered:

“The truth that should have died with her father.”

Claire stepped back.

“Her father?”

Margaret walked toward the window.

“Twenty years ago, your brother thought he could save everyone.”

A pause.

“But he failed.”

Claire looked confused.

“Who?”

Margaret smiled coldly.

“Emma’s father.”

Back at the hospital

Emma sat silently.

Her entire life was changing.

The parents she remembered.

The family she trusted.

The history she believed.

Everything was becoming a lie.

Ethan sat beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma looked at him.

“For what?”

“For bringing you into this.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“You didn’t bring me here.”

She looked at the Blackwood documents.

“They did.”

Then Ryan’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?”

Everyone looked at him.

“What happened?”

Ryan slowly lowered the phone.

“We found him.”

Ethan stood.

“Who?”

Ryan looked directly at him.

“William Blackwood.”

Silence.

“Your father.”

Ethan’s heart stopped.

“Where?”

Ryan answered:

“At a private estate outside the city.”

A pause.

“And Ethan
”

“What?”

Ryan’s face became serious.

“He wasn’t hiding alone.”

Everyone waited.

Ryan continued:

“Someone has been taking care of him.”

Emma frowned.

“Who?”

Ryan looked at the report.

Then said:

“Margaret Blackwood.”

The room froze.

Ethan whispered:

“My grandmother
”

Ryan nodded.

“She knew he was alive.”

The impossible truth was now undeniable.

William Blackwood wasn’t dead.

Margaret knew.

The entire family had been built on a lie.

That night

Ethan arrived at the hidden estate.

The door opened slowly.

A man stood inside.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

William Blackwood looked at his son.

And for the first time in five years

Ethan heard his father’s voice.

“Ethan.”

A pause.

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan stared at him.

Anger.

Pain.

Confusion.

All fighting inside him.

“You let me bury you.”

William lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

A long silence.

Then his father answered:

“Because if I stayed
”

A pause.

“They would have killed you too.”

Ethan froze.

“Who?”

William looked past him.

Toward the darkness outside.

Then whispered:

“Your grandmother.”

The truth had finally reached the surface.

But the person who started everything

Was still standing.

Still powerful.

Still dangerous.

May you like

And now

She knew her secrets were exposed.
