“Ask him why your mother died.”

The room became silent.

Emma turned.

Her heart started beating faster.

“Dad?”

Daniel looked away.

And that was the answer.

Emma’s eyes filled with pain.

Daniel whispered:

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

Daniel struggled.

“I should have told you years ago.”

“Tell me!”

Because Emma’s voice was no longer angry.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Your mother wasn’t killed because she discovered the Blackwood secret.”

“She was killed because she discovered who helped them.”

Daniel nodded.

Emma looked at him.

He looked toward William.

Daniel looked at him.

“You made a choice.”

Emma looked between them.

“Explain.”

William looked destroyed.

“I didn’t kill your mother.”

Nobody spoke.

“But I knew Alexander was watching her.”

A pause.

“And I did nothing.”

The confession was devastating.

Ethan stepped back.

The man he spent years trying to understand.

“You let her die?”

William’s eyes filled with tears.

“You thought?”
