Chapter 8 - THE MAN ETHAN CALLED FAMILY

Martin Kells had handled Ethan’s finances since Ethan was twenty-two.
He attended Ethan and Claire’s wedding.
Sent flowers after Claire disappeared.
Held Ava at her fifth birthday party.
After Ethan married Vanessa, Martin gave the toast.
Now federal investigators found him in a hotel near the Canadian border.
He had three passports.
Two hundred thousand dollars in cash.
And a laptop.
The laptop changed everything.
Martin had not merely helped Vanessa.
He had built the financial architecture.
Blue Harbor.
Three educational companies.
Two security firms.
A medical consulting company.
All connected to planned trust distributions for Ava.
But Martin insisted Vanessa was the mastermind.
“She came to me.”
“When?” Ortiz asked.
“Six years ago.”
Before Claire disappeared.
“What did she want?”
“Information about the Bennett trust.”
“Why?”
Martin laughed nervously.
“Forty-eight million reasons.”
He claimed he initially refused.
Then Vanessa showed him evidence that he had been stealing from Cole Holdings for years.
Small amounts.
Just as Claire had discovered.
Vanessa blackmailed him.
Claire stared through the interview-room glass.
“So Vanessa wasn’t covering Martin’s theft.”
Ethan understood.
“She discovered it first.”
Claire nodded.
“And instead of exposing him, she recruited him.”
Martin became the machine.
Vanessa became the planner.
Claire became the obstacle.
Ava became the prize.
But Martin revealed another fact.
Vanessa never intended Claire to die.
Not originally.
“She wanted Claire declared unstable.”
“Why?” Ortiz asked.
“To destroy her credibility.”
The original plan had been to make Ethan divorce Claire.
Then Vanessa would move closer to Ethan.
But Claire discovered too much.
The plan changed.
