Ava’s trust had been created by Claire’s father, Malcolm Bennett.
Malcolm had been a pharmaceutical entrepreneur.
Brilliant.
Difficult.
Rich enough that money became a security problem instead of a privilege.
When he died, Claire inherited nearly ninety million dollars.
She placed more than half into a protected trust for Ava.
The terms were unusually strict.
No direct access until age twenty-five.
A corporate trustee held the principal.
But Ava’s legal guardian could request distributions for health, education, residence, security and development.
That was Vanessa’s target.
Not forty-eight million dollars directly.
A stream of payments that could be routed through businesses she controlled.
Private security.
Educational consulting.
Residential treatment.
Travel.
Medical care.
All expensive.
All difficult to challenge quickly.
Naomi Fields, the trust attorney, spread documents across a conference table.
“If Vanessa became Ava’s sole guardian, she could submit requests.”
“And Martin could approve them?” Ethan asked.
“He was one of the authorized advisers.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Five million.”
Naomi nodded.
“If Ava’s recording is accurate.”
Claire sat across from him.
Neither had spoken much since her return.
Five years apart created a distance affection could not immediately cross.
Claire finally asked:
“Did you ever question Vanessa’s interest in the trust?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Ethan looked at her.
“Because I trusted her.”
Claire laughed once.
Not cruelly.
Painfully.
“So did I.”
Naomi interrupted.
“There’s something else.”
She displayed the original trust amendment.
“If Claire were legally alive, several provisions change.”
Ethan looked up.
“How?”
“Claire becomes the primary guardian-designate.”
Silence.
Vanessa had not merely needed Claire absent emotionally.
She needed Claire legally dead.
Claire stared at the document.
“That’s why she kept me hidden.”
Naomi nodded.
“And that may be why she panicked when you returned.”
Ethan remembered Vanessa dragging Ava toward the plane.
The one-way ticket.
The hidden guardianship forms.
The accusation against Rosa.
It had not been a spontaneous act.
It had been an emergency evacuation.
Claire had come back.
Vanessa needed Ava gone before Claire could reclaim her legal identity.
Suddenly the airport scene made complete sense.
