Chapter 3 - THE FIRST NIGHT HOME

Ethan did not take Claire to his house.

He could not.

Vanessa lived there.

Her clothes were in Claire’s old bedroom.

Her wedding photographs hung where Claire’s family pictures had once been.

Instead, Ethan arranged a private hotel suite under security.

Claire protested.

“I don’t need your money.”

“This isn’t about money.”

“What is it about?”

“I don’t know yet.”

That was the most truthful thing he had said all day.

Ava refused to go home too.

She stayed with Rosa.

At midnight, Ethan joined them.

Ava was awake.

“What happens to Vanessa?”

“I don’t know.”

“Is Mom staying?”

The word came cautiously.

Mom.

Ethan sat beside her.

“She has somewhere safe tonight.”

“Is she mad at me?”

His chest tightened.

“No.”

“She didn’t hug me.”

“She was waiting for you to decide.”

Ava thought about that.

“Vanessa doesn’t wait.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Ava lowered her voice.

“She says when grown-ups know what’s best, kids don’t get to choose.”

Ethan suddenly remembered dozens of moments he had dismissed.

Vanessa choosing Ava’s clothes.

Friends.

Activities.

Therapist.

School counselor.

Vanessa always had a reason.

Structure.

Stability.

Protection.

Control disguised as concern.

Ava reached into her backpack.

“There’s more recording.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

“The one from the airport wasn’t all of it.”

She pulled out a small digital recorder.

Rosa looked surprised.

“You never told me.”

Ava shrugged.

“I was scared.”

The recording began with Vanessa speaking to someone by telephone.

Ethan recognized her voice instantly.

“Once she’s on the plane, we have seventy-two hours before Ethan can reverse anything.”

A male voice answered.

“And the nanny?”

“Rosa takes the blame.”

“What about Claire?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“If Claire gets to him first, everything collapses.”

Ethan felt the blood drain from his face.

Vanessa knew Claire was coming.

Before the airport.

Before the passport appeared.

Ava stopped the recording.

“There’s more.”

Ethan whispered:

“Play it.”

Vanessa’s voice returned.

“Martin needs to move the trust distributions before the temporary order gets challenged.”

A male voice:

“He says two million is safe.”

Vanessa:

“Tell Martin to move five.”

Rosa whispered:

“Martin?”

Ethan knew exactly one Martin who had access to Ava’s trust accounts.

Martin Kells.

His family accountant.

A man who had worked for Ethan’s father.

A man Ethan had trusted for twenty years.
