Chapter 12 - VANESSA’S HALF-TRUTH
Vanessa finally agreed to speak.
Her attorney wanted a deal.
Claire refused to attend.
Ethan did.
Vanessa entered the interview room without the elegance she had maintained for years.
No makeup.
No tailored dress.
No smile.
“You think Claire was innocent.”
Ethan said nothing.
“She wasn’t.”
“Careful.”
“She wanted to leave you.”
“That isn’t a crime.”
“She told me.”
Vanessa described the months before Claire vanished.
Claire had considered separation.
That part was true.
Ethan knew.
They had been struggling.
Vanessa claimed Claire voluntarily agreed to enter Haven House for a short mental-health retreat.
A signature supported it.
Ethan took the document to Claire.
She stared at it.
“That is my signature.”
He felt cold.
“Did you go voluntarily?”
“For one night.”
Claire finally remembered.
After the confrontation with Vanessa, she had experienced a severe panic attack.
Vanessa convinced her to accept medical help.
Claire signed a twenty-four-hour voluntary admission.
Then the paperwork changed.
Twenty-four hours became indefinite detention.
Her identity changed.
Her phone disappeared.
Her medication increased.
The half-truth was brilliant.
Vanessa had not kidnapped Claire from the first second.
She had tricked Claire into opening the door herself.
Vanessa planned to use that detail at trial.
Claire smiled bitterly.
“She always did that.”
“What?”
“Found the one true sentence inside a hundred lies.”
Prosecutors were worried.
Jurors liked clear stories.
Vanessa’s defense would be messy.
Claire was distressed.
Claire entered Haven House voluntarily.
Claire and Ethan had marital problems.
Vanessa had helped with childcare.
Then Julian found the document that destroyed the argument.
The original voluntary admission contained an expiration time.
9:00 a.m. the following morning.
Beside it, Dr. Keene wrote:
PATIENT REQUESTS DISCHARGE.
Below that:
DECLINED PER V.D.
V.D.
Vanessa Deane.
She had no legal authority.
May you like
No medical authority.
But Haven House obeyed her anyway.
