Chapter 19 - THE QUESTION DAMIAN COULD NOT COMMAND

Their relationship did not become easy overnight.

Damian was still learning.

Grace was still stubborn.

They argued about security.

Work.

Privacy.

Noah eating cookies before dinner.

Lucas teaching Noah inappropriate words.

Evelyn interfering in everything.

It felt strangely normal.

One year after Mercer’s final conviction, Damian brought Grace to the old church where they found Elias’s ledger.

The memorial plaque had been restored.

No hidden compartments.

No secrets.

Grace looked around.

“Why here?”

“Because everything changed here.”

Damian reached into his coat.

Grace raised one eyebrow.

“If that’s a contract, I’m leaving.”

He laughed.

Then pulled out a small velvet box.

Grace stopped.

Damian did not kneel immediately.

Instead he said,

“I spent most of my life thinking love meant protecting what belonged to me.”

Grace listened.

“You taught me people don’t belong to us.”

He opened the box.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

Not extravagant.

Not a Hawthorne family heirloom.

New.

Untouched by the past.

“I don’t want you because you saved Noah.”

“I don’t want you because Isabel trusted you.”

“I don’t want you because you stayed.”

His voice softened.

“I want you because when I’m with you, I remember the man I chose to become.”

Then he knelt.

Grace’s eyes filled.

“Grace Miller…”

He smiled nervously.

“…will you marry me?”

She looked at him for a long time.

Damian began to look genuinely terrified.

Grace finally said,

“One condition.”

“Anything.”

“No secret councils.”

“Agreed.”

“No hidden cameras.”

“Obviously.”

“No solving arguments with ten security guards.”

He hesitated.

“Five?”

Grace stared.

“Two?”

She laughed.

Then whispered,

“Yes.”

Damian stood.

Grace wrapped her arms around him.

Outside, the church bells rang.

Not because someone planned it.

Because Sunday service was starting.

Grace laughed against his shoulder.

“Very dramatic.”

“I had nothing to do with that.”

“That’s exactly what a Hawthorne would say.”

When they returned home, Noah saw the ring.

He stared.

“Grace home now?”

Grace knelt.

“Sometimes.”

Noah frowned.

“Always.”

Damian whispered,

“He negotiates like my father.”

Grace smiled.

“No.”

May you like

She lifted Noah.

“He negotiates like himself.”
