Chapter 12 - MIDNIGHT

They had four hours.
Damian could not hide from every assassin Mercer had recruited.
So he did something nobody expected.
He went public.
At 10:30 p.m., Damian Hawthorne appeared on live television.
No spokesperson.
No lawyer beside him.
He admitted the Hawthorne organization had participated in crimes for decades.
Chicago stopped.
Grace watched from beside Noah.
Damian continued.
He announced that Elias Hawthorne had secretly documented those crimes.
He offered the ledger to federal authorities.
Every name.
Every account.
Every corrupt official.
Cole stared at the screen.
“He’s destroying the empire.”
Grace understood.
“No.”
“What?”
“He’s destroying Mercer’s leverage.”
Damian spoke directly into the camera.
“If you have worked for Hawthorne interests illegally, cooperate now.”
“If anyone approaches my family because of Adrian Mercer…”
He paused.
“…understand that the evidence is already outside my control.”
The message changed everything.
Mercer’s kill order depended on secrets.
Damian removed the secrecy.
At midnight, the scheduled message went out.
Nobody attacked.
Mercer’s empire of fear began collapsing.
Police officials surrendered.
Accountants contacted prosecutors.
Two board members testified.
A senator resigned.
Judge Mercer disappeared.
For six days, nobody found him.
Then Grace received a handwritten letter.
Not electronic.
Delivered through ordinary mail.
YOU TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME.
SO I WILL TAKE THE ONE THING YOU CANNOT REPLACE.
Grace immediately looked toward Noah.
But Mercer did not mean Noah.
Damian.
The next morning, Damian vanished.
His vehicle was found near the Chicago River.
Blood on the seat.
No body.
Grace stared at the empty driver’s side.
“No.”
Cole touched her shoulder.
“We don’t know.”
“Yes, we do.”
She looked at him.
“Mercer doesn’t want Damian dead.”
“How do you know?”
“Because death is too easy.”
Grace remembered Mercer’s personality.
He wanted humiliation.
Control.
Spectacle.
“He wants Damian to surrender publicly.”
They traced Mercer’s remaining assets.
One location stood out.
The old Hawthorne meatpacking plant.
The place where Elias began the family business sixty years earlier.
Grace entered with federal agents.
Damian was chained to a chair beneath the original Hawthorne sign.
Mercer stood behind him.
Holding a weapon.
“No closer.”
Grace stopped.
Mercer smiled.
“The nanny.”
“You really are impossible to eliminate.”
Grace looked at Damian.
His face was bruised.
But his eyes were clear.
Mercer spoke.
“You ruined a dynasty.”
Grace shook her head.
“You ruined yourself.”
His smile vanished.
“You think Damian is different?”
“He’s a murderer.”
“A criminal.”
“A Hawthorne.”
Grace looked at Damian.
“Yes.”
Damian stared at her.
Grace continued.
“He has done terrible things.”
“He knows that.”
“But he chose his son over his empire.”
Mercer tightened his grip.
“People don’t change.”
Grace looked directly at him.
“Then you never understood why you lost.”
Mercer lifted the weapon toward Damian.
A shot exploded.
Grace screamed.
But Mercer fell.
Cole stood behind him.
Weapon lowered.
Federal agents rushed forward.
Damian was alive.
Grace ran to him.
He looked up.
“You came.”
She almost laughed through tears.
“You’re surprised?”
“A little.”
She touched his face.
May you like
“You really don’t learn.”
For the first time since Isabel died, Damian Hawthorne laughed.
