Chapter 17 - GRACE MILLER VS. THE HAWTHORNE LEGACY

The criminal trials lasted nearly a year.
Grace testified repeatedly.
Defense attorneys attacked her.
Called her ambitious.
Obsessed.
Dishonest.
A nanny who wanted access to money.
Exactly the lies Camille once planned to use.
Grace answered everything calmly.
Then prosecutors played the original foyer recording.
Camille’s voice.
“You were going to blame me.”
Camille answering,
“You finally understand.”
The courtroom changed.
Camille testified next.
She admitted everything.
No excuses.
She confirmed Grace had tried to protect Noah.
Confirmed the money had been planted.
Confirmed Gabriel ordered the surveillance.
Then Nathan Vale testified.
Medical records followed.
Isabel’s recording.
Elias’s letters.
Gabriel’s confession.
The conspiracy collapsed piece by piece.
Every lie built around Grace disappeared.
Every lie about Noah disappeared.
Every lie about Isabel disappeared.
Every lie about Elias disappeared.
Mercer sat at the defense table and watched his world die.
Grace’s testimony became the center of the case.
Not because she was powerful.
Because she had witnessed the truth before anyone important cared to see it.
The jury convicted Mercer.
Again.
This time with additional charges.
He would never leave prison.
Afterward reporters surrounded Grace.
“Ms. Miller!”
“Are you in a relationship with Damian Hawthorne?”
“Will you remain Noah’s nanny?”
“Do you control the Hawthorne trust?”
Grace stopped.
Cameras flashed.
She looked directly into them.
“I never wanted control of Hawthorne money.”
“I wanted a fourteen-month-old baby to stop crying because someone was hurting him.”
Silence spread through the crowd.
“That should have been enough.”
Then she walked away.
Damian watched from the courthouse steps.
He looked proud.
Grace approached.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re staring.”
“I’m allowed.”
“Debatable.”
He smiled.
For the first time, their story no longer revolved around survival.
That created a new question.

What were they without the danger?
They decided to find out slowly.
