Chapter 14 - ISABEL’S LETTER

Grace opened the letter alone.
Dear Grace,
You do not know me.
But I know who you are.
Grace stopped reading.
Her hands shook.
Isabel explained.
Months before her death, she had searched for someone outside the Hawthorne world who could protect Noah if anything happened.
A childcare agency provided candidates.
Grace was one of them.
Isabel investigated her.
Not criminally.
Quietly.
She learned Grace had cared for her dying mother as a teenager.
Worked two jobs through college.
Left nursing school when her sister needed help.
No criminal history.
No wealthy connections.
No ambition toward powerful families.
Isabel had chosen her.
Grace’s eyes filled.
I hope you never need to read this.
But if you do, then I was right to be afraid.
Do not teach Noah to worship the Hawthorne name.
Teach him kindness before power.
Teach him that fear is not respect.
And if Damian survives long enough to hear this—
teach him too.
Grace laughed through tears.
That sounded like Isabel.
A woman she had never met.
Yet somehow understood.
At the bottom:
Damian will try to carry everything alone.
Do not let him.
Grace folded the letter.
For the first time, she understood why she had been hired so quickly after Isabel’s death.
Gabriel believed he selected her because she was easy to frame.
But Isabel had already placed Grace’s name in the household records.
Two opposing forces had chosen the same woman for opposite reasons.
One because she seemed powerless.
The other because she was trustworthy.
Grace visited Damian.
They sat across from each other in the federal facility.
She told him about the letter.
Damian smiled sadly.
“She always was smarter than me.”
“Much.”
He laughed.
Grace watched him.
Something between them had changed.
It had been changing for months.
But neither named it.
They were not ready.
Noah deserved stability.
Grace deserved a life not built around Damian’s crisis.
And Damian needed to become someone who could offer love without ownership.
So they waited.
Eighteen months passed.
Noah learned to run.
Then climb.
Then say Grace properly.
He also learned to shout “Daddy!” whenever Damian appeared during visits.
Camille testified.
Mercer was convicted on conspiracy, kidnapping, corruption, and murder-related charges.
Gabriel’s recorded confession proved crucial.
Cole resigned from Hawthorne security.
Then returned three weeks later because, in Grace’s words, retirement made him “unbearably annoying.”
Evelyn Hawthorne moved into the estate.
At ninety-two, she terrified gardeners and cheated at cards.
Life slowly became ordinary.
Then Damian came home four months early for good behavior and cooperation.
No photographers waited.
Only Noah.
Grace stood behind him.
The front door opened.
Damian stepped inside.
Noah stared.
Then screamed,
“DADDY!”
He ran.
Damian dropped his bag.
Kneeling, he caught his son.
Grace watched him cry openly.
No shame.
No hiding.
When Damian looked at her over Noah’s shoulder, neither spoke.
They did not need to.
But that evening, Damian discovered an envelope on his desk.
A legal notice.
Someone was challenging Noah’s trust.
And the claimant had a name nobody expected.
May you like
Lucas Hawthorne.
Damian’s alleged older son.
