Chapter 1 – The Promise

Clara gently took Lucy's hand and guided her toward the service hallway.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "You weren't supposed to be out there."
Lucy lowered her eyes.
"I know."
"But he looked... lonely."
Clara's expression softened.
She glanced toward the ballroom where Matthew stood beneath flashing cameras beside his father.
"I noticed."
Before Clara could say another word, a familiar voice called from behind.
"Miss Harper."
Alexander Vale's executive assistant stood perfectly straight, clipboard pressed against her chest.
"Mr. Vale would like a word."
Clara's face immediately turned pale.
"I'm sorry if my daughter disturbed the guests."
"You'll have to discuss that with Mr. Vale."
Lucy felt her stomach tighten.
She expected to be scolded.
Perhaps even banned from returning.
Instead, Alexander was standing alone inside the library overlooking the gardens.
Without reporters.
Without donors.
Without the practiced smile.
He looked tired.
Far more tired than he had looked on stage.
"I heard," he said quietly, "that you know American Sign Language."
Lucy shook her head.
"Not really."
"My great-grandpa taught me a little."
Alexander looked toward the ballroom window where Matthew was once again standing alone.
"My son smiled tonight."
May you like
He paused.
"I haven't seen that smile in a very long time."
