Chapter 19 - THE LAST KEY

Victoria woke in the ambulance.

“August.”

Damian leaned over her.

“Where did he go?”

She struggled to focus.

“The harbor.”

“Did he take the key?”

Victoria nodded.

Emma’s heart sank.

“What was it?”

“A hardware token.”

Damian cursed.

Without it, August could reach Sofia’s hidden account.

Three hundred million dollars.

Enough to disappear.

Enough to rebuild.

Enough to keep Black Crown alive somewhere else.

Victoria grabbed Damian’s sleeve.

“He doesn’t just want the money.”

“What else?”

“The account contains a second archive.”

Rebecca, standing behind him, went pale.

“Sofia duplicated everything.”

Victoria nodded.

“And August can destroy it once he transfers the funds.”

Damian looked toward the harbor.

The Aurelia departed in forty-five minutes.

Point of no return.

Federal agents surrounded Terminal Four.

Daniel Cho wanted patience.

Damian had none.

But this time he obeyed.

Because rushing in was what August expected.

Emma studied the terminal map.

“What does August want most?”

Damian answered immediately.

“Control.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“He wants survival.”

Rebecca looked at her.

Emma continued.

“He escaped death once by making everyone believe he was gone.”

Damian understood.

“He’ll do it again.”

“The ship is misdirection.”

Vincent, pale from his shoulder wound, examined the map.

“What else leaves the harbor tonight?”

Cho checked.

“Private helicopter from Control Tower.”

Raymond’s key card.

Damian looked at Emma.

“You’re right.”

They moved.

August was already on the rooftop when Damian arrived.

Wind tore across the harbor.

Helicopter blades beginning to turn.

A metal case sat beside him.

August smiled.

“You always were slow when emotions became involved.”

Damian stopped twenty feet away.

“Noah is safe.”

“For now.”

“Sofia is safe.”

August’s smile weakened.

“Temporary.”

“Raymond is in custody.”

“He’ll talk.”

“Yes.”

“Victoria?”

“Talking too.”

August laughed.

“Then everyone has finally grown a conscience.”

“No.”

Damian looked at him.

“They became afraid of dying for you.”

That struck deeper.

August picked up the case.

“You’re letting one nanny dismantle a dynasty.”

Damian’s eyes hardened.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m letting my son grow up without one.”

August smiled with contempt.

“You think legitimacy will save you?”

“No.”

“You think federal cooperation erases what you’ve done?”

“No.”

“Then what are you winning?”

Damian glanced toward the rooftop entrance.

Emma had arrived behind agents.

Noah was not with her.

Safe elsewhere.

Damian looked back at his father.

“The right to stop becoming you.”

August’s face changed.

For the first time—

Rage.

He pulled a gun.

Agents shouted.

Damian did not move.

August aimed.

Not at Damian.

At Emma.

Damian moved instantly.

The shot cracked.

Concrete splintered.

Emma dropped behind the wall.

Agents fired.

August stumbled.

His weapon fell.

He collapsed near the rooftop edge.

Damian reached him.

August stared up.

“You would destroy everything for her?”

Damian looked toward Emma.

Then answered—

“For Noah.”

August laughed weakly.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

Damian crouched.

“You never understood the difference between loving someone and owning them.”

August’s smile disappeared.

Federal agents surrounded him.

Alive.

Arrested.

Defeated without the execution he expected.

The metal case contained the hardware token.

Rebecca secured it.

At 11:58 p.m., two minutes before the offshore transfer window closed, Emma entered Sofia’s childhood lullaby phrase.

Access granted.

Three hundred million dollars froze.

The duplicate archive uploaded to federal servers.

Black Crown was finished.

Or so they believed.

Then Rebecca opened one final file.

A video.

Sofia.

Recorded four years earlier.

“If this file has opened, August has lost.”

Damian watched.

Sofia smiled sadly.

“But Damian still has one decision left.”

The video displayed a list.

Damian’s name appeared among Black Crown transactions.

Not inherited transactions.

Not forged transactions.

Orders he had personally approved.

Emma looked at him.

Damian did not look away.

Sofia’s recording continued.

“The truth only matters if we tell all of it.”

Silence.

Damian stared at his own crimes.

His father was finished.

But Damian’s judgment had just begun.
