Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS DEAD

11:51 p.m.

Damian entered Terminal Nine alone.

Or appeared to.

The drive was inside his coat.

Victoria’s warning remained in his mind.

That’s the trap.

August expected a father desperate enough to exchange everything for his child.

So Damian gave him exactly that man.

He walked through the warehouse doors with empty hands raised.

“August.”

His father emerged.

Time collapsed.

Four years.

One funeral.

A thousand unanswered questions.

August looked older.

But unmistakably alive.

“Son.”

Damian’s voice contained no warmth.

“Where is Noah?”

“Safe.”

“Emma?”

“Annoyingly brave.”

“Show me.”

August nodded.

A guard opened a steel door.

Emma sat inside.

Noah awake in her arms.

“Daddy!”

Damian almost moved.

August raised one hand.

Damian stopped.

“Drive.”

“Child first.”

August smiled.

“You negotiate exactly like I taught you.”

“You taught me never to pay before seeing the asset.”

Emma hated the word.

Asset.

But she understood the game.

August gestured.

A guard carried Noah halfway across the room.

Damian’s entire body wanted to move.

He didn’t.

“Drive.”

Damian removed it.

Placed it on the floor.

Kicked it forward.

August picked it up.

Inserted it into a laptop.

Nothing.

Encrypted.

He looked at Damian.

“Key.”

“Noah first.”

August stared.

Then nodded.

The guard released Noah.

The toddler ran awkwardly across the concrete.

Damian dropped to one knee.

Noah crashed against him.

For one second Damian stopped being Hawthorne.

He was only a father.

He held his son with both arms.

Eyes closed.

Breathing him in.

Then he handed Noah to a man entering from the side.

Vincent.

August’s guards raised weapons.

August smiled.

“I told you to come alone.”

“I did.”

Vincent had entered through another access point.

Different game.

Emma almost laughed.

Damian stood.

“Release Emma.”

August shook his head.

“Key.”

Damian gave it.

August typed.

The archive opened.

Thousands of files.

August looked almost reverent.

“My life’s work.”

“No.”

Damian stared at him.

“Your evidence.”

August smiled.

Then another door opened.

A wheelchair rolled into view.

Damian stopped breathing.

The woman sitting in it was thin.

Pale.

Older.

A scar ran along one side of her face.

But he knew her eyes.

“Sofia.”

Her lips trembled.

“Damian.”

The world disappeared.

No warehouse.

No guns.

No August.

Only her.

Alive.

His wife.

Sofia began crying silently.

Damian took one step.

Then stopped.

Because a gun was pressed against her chair.

August watched him.

“You see why sentiment is expensive?”

Damian looked at his father with hatred beyond language.

“You kept her prisoner for three years.”

“She kept herself imprisoned.”

Sofia shook her head.

“Liar.”

Her voice was weak.

August’s expression darkened.

“She could have ended this at any time.”

“By giving you the money?”

“And passwords.”

Damian stared at Sofia.

“You knew about Emma?”

Sofia nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

“Why?”

“To protect Noah.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were alive?”

A tear slid down her cheek.

“Because every message I sent was intercepted.”

Vincent looked at August.

Damian understood.

Someone inside Hawthorne communications.

Still.

Even now.

Sofia continued.

“August said if I escaped, he’d kill you.”

Damian looked at his father.

August shrugged.

“Effective.”

Emma saw the movement first.

A guard behind Vincent reaching inside his jacket.

“Vincent!”

The shot fired.

Vincent fell.

Noah screamed.

Chaos erupted.

Lights went out.

Emma threw herself to the floor.

Damian reached Noah.

Rebecca’s tactical team—secretly positioned through federal contacts—breached from the east entrance.

August disappeared into darkness.

Sofia’s wheelchair overturned.

Emma crawled toward her.

“Mrs. Hawthorne!”

Sofia grabbed Emma’s arm.

“Take Noah!”

“We’re getting you out.”

“No.”

“Don’t say that.”

Sofia’s fingers tightened.

“He’ll go for the harbor.”

“Who?”

“August.”

Sofia pulled Emma closer.

“He has one more contingency.”

“What?”

“If Damian releases the archive…”

Sofia struggled to breathe.

“…August will destroy Hawthorne Holdings and frame Damian for everything.”

Emma froze.

“Can he?”

Sofia looked toward Damian.

May you like

“Yes.”

And across the terminal, Damian was already pressing the button that would release the Black Crown files to federal authorities.
