Chapter 16 - THE PRICE OF TRUTH

“Damian!”

Emma’s scream stopped him.

His thumb hovered over the release command.

“What?”

Sofia tried to sit up.

“Don’t.”

Damian stared at his wife.

“He has Noah.”

“Not anymore.”

“He has spent four years destroying our family.”

“I know.”

“Then we end it.”

Sofia shook her head.

“If you release everything through that system, August triggers the mirrored accounts.”

Rebecca rushed in.

“What mirrored accounts?”

“Hawthorne Holdings.”

Sofia coughed.

“He connected legitimate company funds to Black Crown transfers.”

Rebecca went pale.

“If the archive releases without separating them…”

“Every government agency will believe Damian financed the network.”

Damian looked at the screen.

August had built a dead man’s switch.

Truth with poison wrapped around it.

Release the evidence—

and Damian falls with August.

Thousands of innocent employees lose jobs.

Company pensions freeze.

Assets vanish.

Hospitals supplied by Hawthorne logistics could lose contracts.

Ports could shut down.

Damian slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time, victory felt impossible.

Vincent survived the gunshot.

Barely.

The bullet passed through his shoulder.

Sofia was rushed to surgery for complications from years of untreated injuries.

Noah remained in Emma’s arms.

At 4:12 a.m., Damian stood in the hospital corridor.

Again.

Same fluorescent lights.

Different world.

Emma approached.

“You should sit.”

“No.”

“That wasn’t really a suggestion.”

Damian looked at her.

Despite everything, she still spoke to him like a human being.

Not a boss.

Not a legend.

Not a feared man.

He sat.

Emma joined him.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Damian said—

“You should hate this family.”

Emma looked through the window at Noah sleeping.

“I hate what people in it have done.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

She turned toward him.

“If it were the same thing, Noah would be guilty too.”

That silenced him.

Emma continued.

“So would Sofia.”

Damian looked down.

“So would you.”

He laughed without humor.

“You don’t know everything I’ve done.”

“No.”

Emma’s voice softened.

“But I know what you do next matters.”

That sentence stayed with him.

At 5:08, Rebecca arrived.

“We have a problem.”

Damian almost smiled.

“That phrase has lost meaning.”

“Victoria escaped.”

Emma stood.

“How?”

“She gave federal agents information on August in exchange for temporary movement privileges.”

“And ran?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“We don’t know.”

Damian knew.

“Wedding venue.”

Emma stared.

“What?”

“The ceremony was supposed to happen tomorrow.”

“Why would she go there?”

“Because she hid something.”

They reached Saint Aurelia Ballroom at dawn.

Empty tables.

White flowers.

A wedding cake nobody would cut.

On the stage stood Victoria.

Holding a folder.

No guards.

No weapon.

She looked exhausted.

“Finally.”

Damian remained near the entrance.

“What is that?”

“My insurance.”

“Against August?”

“Against everyone.”

Emma stepped forward.

Victoria looked at her.

“I should hate you.”

Emma’s expression remained cold.

“You hurt a baby.”

“I know.”

“No excuse changes that.”

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

It was the first honest thing Emma had heard from her.

Victoria placed the folder on a table.

“August kept financial originals separate from the Black Crown archive.”

Rebecca opened it.

Bank routing.

Transfer maps.

Signatures.

“These can separate Damian’s legitimate accounts from August’s criminal network.”

Damian stared at Victoria.

“Why give them to me?”

“Because August killed Julian.”

“You said overdose.”

“He ordered Crane to dose him until his heart stopped.”

Victoria’s face twisted.

“And I spent years blaming the wrong people.”

Emma did not soften.

“You still chose to hurt Noah.”

Victoria looked at her.

“Yes.”

No tears.

No defense.

“I did.”

Then she said—

“And I’ll testify.”

Damian stared.

“Against August?”

“Against Raymond.”

Raymond.

Emma frowned.

“He helped us.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

“He helped himself.”

Damian’s expression changed.

Victoria opened the second folder.

Inside was a payment ledger.

Raymond had taken millions from August.

For years.

Including one payment dated the morning of Sofia’s crash.
