Chapter 11 - THE EMPTY HOSPITAL ROOM

Noah’s hospital room looked untouched.

Toy truck on the floor.

Half-empty water cup.

Blue blanket folded near the bed.

No sign of struggle.

That was what terrified Damian most.

Emma would have fought.

Unless fighting would have endangered Noah.

Security footage showed a man in scrubs entering at 11:42.

Emma opened the door.

They spoke.

Then she followed him out carrying Noah.

Rebecca froze the frame.

“She knew him.”

Damian stared.

“Or thought she did.”

The man wore a surgical mask.

Badge.

Hospital jacket.

But his walk was wrong.

Too controlled.

Vincent leaned closer.

“Former military.”

Damian looked at him.

“You’re still here because my son is missing.”

“I know.”

“If you betray me again—”

“I know.”

Victoria stood near the wall under guard.

She had refused to leave.

Not from loyalty.

Fear.

Whoever took Noah frightened her more than Damian did.

Rebecca enlarged the badge.

“Fake.”

Emma appeared again in the footage.

She looked down at Noah.

Then directly at the camera.

And touched her ear.

Twice.

Damian leaned forward.

“What is she doing?”

Vincent frowned.

Emma touched her ear twice again.

Then brushed her thumb across Noah’s stuffed bear.

Damian understood.

“She’s leaving a message.”

“What message?”

Damian remembered something Emma had once said about Noah.

When he was frightened, she taught him a game.

Two taps meant listen.

One touch meant remember.

Emma knew Damian occasionally reviewed nursery footage while traveling.

She was telling him to notice the bear.

They found Noah’s usual stuffed bear in the hospital room.

Rebecca picked it up.

Too light.

Vincent cut the seam.

Inside was an empty plastic slot.

Damian stared.

“A tracker?”

Emma had removed it.

She had put it somewhere else.

Vincent opened the Hawthorne tracking system.

One unregistered device was moving east.

Fast.

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“Got you.”

They followed the signal to an industrial district near the river.

Three vehicles.

No sirens.

No police.

Rebecca protested.

Damian ignored her.

Then the tracker stopped.

At a church.

Abandoned for twelve years.

Damian entered through the rear.

Vincent beside him.

Inside, dust floated through broken light.

No Emma.

No Noah.

Only the stuffed bear.

Placed on the altar.

Damian’s stomach dropped.

“Trap.”

A speaker clicked on.

Emma’s voice filled the church.

Recorded.

“Damian, don’t follow.”

His jaw tightened.

The recording continued.

“They know you’ll trace the tracker.”

A pause.

“I moved it before they searched me.”

Damian looked at Vincent.

Emma had known the church would be a false destination.

“They want the Black Crown ledger.”

Damian stepped closer to the speaker.

“I don’t know where it is.”

Emma’s recorded voice continued.

“But Noah might.”

Damian froze.

“He’s too young to understand what they’re asking, but they keep showing him pictures of Sofia.”

A child whimpered faintly in the background.

Damian’s blood chilled.

Emma continued.

“Victoria trained him to repeat phrases because they believe Sofia hid a clue inside something she left him.”

Rebecca had been right.

This was bigger than company shares.

“They keep saying the word lullaby.”

Damian stopped.

Sofia used to sing one song to Noah.

Every night.

Not a nursery rhyme.

A melody Sofia wrote herself.

Emma’s recording ended with—

“Don’t trust the first place you remember.”

Then silence.

Damian stared at the altar.

Sofia’s lullaby.

There had been one line she repeated differently every time.

Where the black bird sleeps beneath the winter moon.

Damian had always thought it was meaningless.

Then he remembered.

His father’s old hunting lodge was called Blackbird House.

And Sofia hated it.

Damian turned.

“North.”

Vincent understood.

“The lodge.”

They drove.

But halfway there, Raymond called.

Damian answered.

His uncle’s voice sounded weak.

“They know.”

“What?”

“They know about Blackbird.”

“How?”

“I told them.”

Damian nearly crushed the phone.

“Why?”

“They have Hargrove.”

“Where are you?”

Raymond coughed.

Then said—

“Damian, listen to me.”

A gunshot cracked over the line.

May you like

The call ended.

And every light on Damian’s dashboard went black.
