Chapter 7 - THE CHAPEL

The bullet had missed Scarlett by less than three feet.

It struck a painting behind her.

Police secured the building.

The shooter vanished.

Scarlett was immediately taken into protective custody.

For the first time, Noah considered the possibility that she was both perpetrator and target.

It did not excuse what she had done to Mia.

But it changed the shape of the conspiracy.

Someone wanted Scarlett silent.

Probably the same person who wanted Adrian missing.

Grant Vale.

The next morning, Noah and Mia went to the old Hale chapel.

Mia was supposed to be resting.

She refused to stay behind.

“You are not going anywhere without me.”

Noah sighed.

“You were nearly killed four days ago.”

“So were you yesterday.”

“That was different.”

“It was a bullet.”

He had no answer.

The chapel had been closed for decades.

Dust covered the pews.

Sunlight poured through stained glass.

Noah stood near the altar.

“This is where my parents married.”

Mia looked around.

“Where you heard your mother say yes.”

“That’s what Dad meant.”

They searched for an hour.

Nothing.

Then Mia stopped in front of the old organ.

A brass plaque was attached to its side.

IN MEMORY OF ELEANOR HALE.

Noah’s grandmother.

Mia touched it.

“It moves.”

Behind the plaque was a tiny compartment.

Inside:

Half of a metal card.

Noah smiled despite himself.

“My father loved puzzles.”

“Your father was paranoid.”

“Apparently with good reason.”

They took the card to Evelyn.

The first half from the greenhouse matched perfectly with the second from the chapel.

Together, etched numbers formed an access key.

A forensic cybersecurity firm used it to open an encrypted archive stored in a dormant Hale Meridian server.

Thousands of files appeared.

Invoices.

Transfers.

Insurance records.

Executive emails.

Names.

Twenty-three names.

Judges.

Accountants.

Lawyers.

Doctors.

Corporate officers.

Some retired.

Some dead.

Some still active.

At the top of the list:

Grant Vale.

Elaine Parker.

And one unexpected name.

Margaret Hale.

Noah stared.

“My mother?”

Mia looked at him.

Margaret Hale had died after a long illness six years earlier.

Noah remembered her as gentle.

Private.

Devastated by Daniel’s death.

Why was her name inside Daniel’s conspiracy archive?

They opened the file.

A recorded conversation.

Daniel’s voice.

Then Margaret’s.

Noah had not heard his parents speaking together since childhood.

For a moment, emotion nearly overwhelmed him.

Then the meaning of their words became clear.

Margaret knew about the missing money.

She had begged Daniel not to expose Grant immediately.

Why?

Because Grant possessed evidence of Daniel’s affair with Lena’s mother.

Margaret feared scandal.

Feared humiliation.

Feared Noah discovering his half-sister.

Daniel refused.

“I won’t protect a thief because I was a coward fifteen years ago.”

Margaret cried.

Then another voice entered.

Grant.

The recording ended.

Noah sat frozen.

His mother had not been part of the fraud.

But her fear had delayed his father.

Perhaps long enough to kill him.

Mia took his hand.

“You were a child.”

“I spent years thinking they had a perfect marriage.”

“They were human.”

“My father cheated.”

“Yes.”

“My mother protected a criminal to hide it.”

“For a while.”

Noah looked at her.

“You’re defending them?”

“No.”

Mia’s voice was gentle.

“I’m telling you the truth doesn’t become less true because the people in it were complicated.”

Noah stared at the screen.

One folder remained unopened.

TITLE:

PROJECT HEIR.

Inside were documents created after Daniel’s death.

Grant’s name appeared everywhere.

Insurance projections.

Trust forecasts.

Voting structures.

And notes describing Noah’s eventual marriage as a “control event.”

Then they found Scarlett’s name.

AGE 22 — PREPARE FOR SUCCESSION ALIGNMENT.

Mia felt sick.

“Your engagement.”

Noah nodded slowly.

Grant had not simply hoped Scarlett would marry Noah.

He had planned it.

Marriage would have aligned the Vale voting block with the Hale estate.

If Noah and Scarlett had a child, Grant would effectively retain control over the succession trust through his daughter.

But Noah left Scarlett.

Then married Mia.

The entire strategy collapsed.

And when Mia became pregnant, the twenty-five-year audit was suddenly unavoidable.

Noah’s phone rang.

Evelyn answered for him.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She listened.

Then looked at Noah.

“They found Adrian.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“An abandoned hunting lodge owned by a Vale subsidiary.”

Noah stood.

“Is he injured?”

“Badly.”

“Can he talk?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“He said one thing before they transported him.”

“What?”

She looked at Mia.

“He said Scarlett didn’t push Mia because of the trust.”

Noah frowned.

“Then why?”

Evelyn continued.

“He said Scarlett pushed her because Mia had already found something.”

Mia stared at her.

“What did I find?”

May you like

Adrian’s answer had been only two words.

“The ultrasound.”
