Chapter 15 - THE LOWEST NIGHT

The next blow came from the hospital.

Mia’s contractions returned.

This time they would not stop.

Doctors prepared for an emergency premature delivery if necessary.

Noah remained beside her.

The board suspension no longer mattered.

The company no longer mattered.

Nothing mattered except Mia and the baby.

Then federal agents called.

Grant had emptied an emergency account containing twenty-two million dollars.

A private aircraft was being prepared under a false registration.

He might escape within hours.

“Noah,” Evelyn said, “they need you to identify certain corporate authentication codes.”

Mia heard.

“Go.”

“No.”

“Go.”

“I’m not leaving you.”

She gripped his hand.

“You’re not leaving me.”

Her voice was tired but firm.

“You’re finishing this.”

“What if—”

“No.”

She looked directly at him.

“Do not let Grant Vale turn love into another weapon.”

The sentence stopped him.

That was exactly what Grant had done his entire life.

He used Scarlett’s love for family.

Adrian’s fear.

Margaret’s shame.

Parker’s guilt.

Samuel’s love for his son.

Everyone’s weakness was something human.

Grant simply turned it into leverage.

Noah kissed Mia.

“I’m coming back.”

“You better.”

He left with agents.

The authentication codes identified the aircraft as a decoy.

Grant had never intended to board it.

Instead, investigators discovered movement around the Vale family mausoleum.

A strange location.

Until Adrian explained:

“My grandfather built a private records vault under it.”

Agents entered.

No Grant.

But another archive.

And a letter.

Addressed to Scarlett.

Scarlett read it from jail.

Her father had written:

You were raised for one purpose and failed it.

Adrian was raised to obey and betrayed me.

Neither of you deserved what I built.

Scarlett sat silently for a long time.

Then she said:

“He never loved us.”

Her attorney said nothing.

Scarlett laughed bitterly.

“I spent half my life hurting people because I was terrified of disappointing a man who never loved me.”

For the first time, her regret was not about Noah.

It was about herself.

Meanwhile, Mia’s condition worsened.

The baby’s heartbeat became unstable.

Doctors rushed her into surgery.

Noah was still across the city.

His phone rang.

He saw the hospital number.

Everything inside him stopped.

The doctor’s voice came quickly.

“Mr. Hale, we need to deliver your daughter now.”

Noah closed his eyes.

“I’m coming.”

He turned to the agents.

Then another call came.

Marcus.

“We found Grant.”

Noah looked toward the hospital road.

Then at the location Marcus had sent.

Grant was less than ten minutes away.

For eighteen years, he had escaped consequences.

Noah could go after him.

Or go to Mia.

His father had faced the same kind of choice.

Principle.

Family.

Justice.

Love.

Grant believed people could only choose one.

Noah handed Marcus’s location to the federal agent.

“You take him.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Noah got into his car.

“I’m going to my wife.”

He reached the hospital twelve minutes later.

Too late to be beside Mia when surgery began.

He stood outside operating-room doors.

Waiting.

Powerless.

For once, there was nothing he could control.

Thirty-six minutes later, a doctor appeared.

Noah stood so quickly the chair nearly fell.

“Your wife is stable.”

He almost collapsed.

“And my daughter?”

The doctor smiled.

“Small.”

A pause.

“Angry.”

Another pause.

“And breathing.”

Noah covered his face.

His daughter had been born.

The trust had activated.

The audit was now mandatory.

Grant had lost his final chance to stop it.

Then Noah’s phone vibrated.

Marcus.

Grant had escaped the raid.

Again.

But this time he left something behind.

A police radio.

Grant had been listening to hospital communications.

Which meant he knew the baby was born.

And if the audit could no longer be prevented—

Grant had no reason left to keep anyone alive.
